Title: Yahoo! GeoCities closing down later this year...
Post by: NeptuneNavigator2001 on May 07, 2009, 02:20:52 AM
I just got word that Yahoo! is closing GeoCities down later this year, so I decided to save the trouble and get rid of my site now. Don't worry, I've backed it all up, but that now means I don't have a site.  Suppose I could get a Photobucket account in the meantime at least. (Not like I did much with my site over the 7 years I've had it, but still, it was nice.) Anybody know of any free alternatives out there?

I won't say it on the board but that place had a very accurate knock-off name because it wasn't a very good service.

I have my WD site at google.  I put it up under the old googlepages system (no longer offered) but I'm guessing the new system is better.  You can try that if you want.  Just be aware of google's indexing policies and stuff.

Hmm... Okay. And yeah, GeoCities wasn't that great anyway. But I did manage to keep my site around for seven years, even if I didn't do too much with it. :p

Ding dong the witch is dead...

Maybe that site I made 15 years ago will go away now.

I made my first site at Geocities back in '97. Then Geocities was one of the best places to build a site. A true community of folks with similar interests. I liked the neighborhood concept, but as they say all good things must end. When Yahoo bought out Geo all the bells & whistles we loved were gone. I'm so glad I moved my site from Geo to its present home, though it's costing me. Honestly, one can't find a good free host anymore. They're either all pay-by-month or have so many technical problems. I'd recommend 250Free (http://www.250free.com) but they're really not that realible, too much downtime and serious technical glitches.  :(

I'll miss Geo only in it's pre Yahoo days. Now? I could care less, and I was soooooo wishing to be rid of the space.  Guess my wish came true. :lol

Meh... I guess I'll just not worry about a site anymore, and just stick to MySpace or YouTube, uploading files as need be to free uploading services... I figured it was too good to be true anyway...

At least you do have 2 other places you can use, your youtube and myspace it seems.  Better then nothing.

True, Kor, true. Not that big of a deal anyway... At the very least I could get a Photobucket account. :p

Yes Adam. :p I'll make one in a little while, after I do a couple things to prepare for my day. ;)
