Title: Awards
Post by: DarkHououmon on May 31, 2009, 01:06:15 AM
I was talking with a friend of mine about GOF's voting, and she has suggested the idea of setting it up so that everyone is given an award, which may eliminate any kind of voting and no one would feel left out. I'm not sure if I like the idea. But I was wondering how everyone else felt about the idea of everyone getting an award.

Normally I would agree to such a thing, but seeing as the awards go in signatures, everyone getting an award every year would make the board look pretty trashy after about say....20 years. :p I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm sticking around that long if this board can survive for that many years.  I've been here for around 2 years.  What's another 20? :lol

We can't just give awards to everyone.. that would defeat the purpose of having awards..

I think she means something like an award that you get if you've made 100 posts that year.  A title of "Member Through 2009" or something like that.  But still, the signatures would get too full and the board would look pretty bad, so that won't work.  Unless of course the awards were MUCH smaller.

oNce again, posting 100 times would require giving out over a hundred awards...heck Noname would get it based on what he did in the last two hours alone..

If you like that idea you can pm Petrie about it if you want.  Up to you though.

How about this?  Make an award for every year that says something like "Joined in ______ (year)" and update the picture every year.  That way it's not a totally new award but instead just an updated one.

Of course this would pose the problem that after 10 years or so, poor Malte would be spending 5 months out of the year making new awards. :lol

Now I'm in an ugly position to talk about this because with those awards I have anything other than agreeing to as many awards as possible will look like I was begrudging anyone else for awards, which I really don't.
Nevertheless I must agree that the pouring out of awards would lead them ad absurdum as they are supposed to be something rare and special. The Congressional Medal of Honor would not be so special if every US citizen got it. I must ask you Noname to take the award out of your signature. In spite of the fact that you have added the "honorable mention" line, only the winners and the runner ups may wear the award badges in their signatures (and there is no need for the runner ups to add a line about them being runner up winners to their awards as the only difference between winners and runner ups is that the winners may take the first pick among the various award drafts). No draft of an award that is issued based on a vote (which excludes the joining and the singing project awards) is to be in more than one signature so the winners have something unique in their signature.

Nevertheless there IS something that even those who were not elected for an award badge can include in their signature. If you were mentioned by someone in a vote for an award, why not copy paste the respective lines of text into your signature? The explanatory lines for tha awards are meant to give credit to people and I think that these lines may well be worn with pride.

As mentioned before, everyone who stays with the GOF will ultimately get an Award for the joining date. Personally I regard the joining award (which means that a member has been with the GOF for at least two and a half years) as a greater honor than the awards given to some people who have been very active on the GOF for a few month and then left never to be seen again.

Okay. What I think about that:

An award is something you get, because you did something special. Like that you helped very much members or did many fanarts and such things. It¥s hard for me to explain in english since I am not a native english speaker, but I¥ll try.

So, please tell me, why should anybody feel left out if he or she doesn¥t get an award? I mean, that¥s just childish in my opinion. For me, if I could give more awards of one kind, I think like about 6 members would have get the RPer award from me. But there is just one award  I can give to everyone. That doesn¥t mean now, just because I gave the Rper award to GVG, that the other Rpers are bad in Role play gaming. GVG is just the one who I noticed as one of the best rpers there. That¥s why I gave this award to him. Maybe another member was a better roleplaygamer, sure. But then I just didn¥t noticed him or her. That can happen, especially because of the fact, that I am not in every role play game Oo.
Another point is, that this here (I said it before, I say it now), is just a forum. It¥s not really real, it¥s virtual. So why the heck should anyone care what others think about him or her? Real life is what counts not what virtual people think about you in a forum.

For me, I am not sad or angry that I didn¥t get any award yet. Why should I? I know that some of the folks here like my artwork, my vids, and like me as a good friend. And that¥s what counts. Not such a silly award.

.... And now look at my sig. I have not a single award. And now compare that to my opinion. It doesn¥t MATTER!

Have a nice day

~Patrick~  ;)

People are whiny this year.....we've never had this issue in the past three years we've done this and I think the GOF has turned out just fine.

Sorry...I think the system works fine.

I totally agree to that. I am here since 2007. And I really do love this place.

I'm not complaining about not winning any awards. In fact, I wouldn't mind going my entire life here without ever winning an award. I never expected to win an award, and I didn't even expect to get any votes. (I only got one vote from some newbie who happened to like my interest in Bionicle.)

I like the way the voting/awards is now, as well. I never really saw anything wrong with it.

Well this is very embarassing, but I have a confession to make. I wouldn't be able to do this anywhere else because nobody else I know is as accepting and hopefully understanding as you guys. Well, here goes nothing:

Obviously there's been much discussion about the awards this year, mainly because of the topic noname started. Well after reading it, it made me realize something I should have done a while ago. I am very ashamed to say that these past couple weeks I've been very frustrated with the awards, much like noname. I have no idea why I let the idea of winning an award get to me, because I fully realize I shouldn't. I understand that it's not what you get for doing something that makes you who you are, but really what you do instead. I've been such a fool lately for thinking this way, and I realize now that my thoughts are all wrong and completely ignorant. I am so sorry that I had this impression on GOF, as it has been one of the best places I've ever visited on the internet, and the majority of the people here, including the mods, have become some really great friends.

To make matters worse, I privately made my emotions public to one person because I felt the need to get them off my chest. After realizing I was being a complete and total ***whole of myself, I need to apologize to this person. He knows who I am talking about, and I don't want to reveal their name because it would make me feel even more embarrased. I hope they is reading this, and I just wanted to say I am so so so so so so so sorry for everything. I should have never sent you those countless pms about the awards, as I realize now they were stupid and above all not your business. I thank you so much for opening yourself to me even though I really didn't deserve it, and I hope you can forgive me and that this doesn't change how much I treasure our friendship.

To all of GOF, please forgive me. THIS I needed to get off my chest as I have felt nothing but guilt these past couple weeks. Everything everybody has said is true. It shouldn't and doesn't matter if I win an award or not. I'm just glad to be a part of this website. Once again, congratulations to all the winners. You guys really deserve it.

Good points lbtfan....the awards don't make you "holier than thou" on this board.  That was never the point.  Someone mentioned something about being an admin made you different in another thread.  Admins are simply people I can trust to run this place in my absence, and all (except Tim) have been friends with me since 2003 or earlier (over six years people!).  You earn your place and respect here.  Likewise, you earn the award if you have made a positive presence on others in a specific field.

I really don't see what's the point of complaining about awards you didn't get.

I also feel that the system works fine now.

And personally, I feel that even being mentioned for an award is a feat in itself as it shows that you have distinguished yourself from others.

Hell, I was shocked to be nominated for the Role Play Gamer, Feedback and Appreciated member awards.

To be perfectly honest, I wish there was a way to make it so the awards wouldn't show up in your signature, but just in your profile instead.  I never much liked having those large awards of mine tacked into my signature.  That's why I shrank them.  I'm thinking of removing them and simply adding a line of text to my signature proclaiming the awards I have won.  I have nothing against the pictures.  They're great.  I just don't like them in my signature.

I guess I don't know how Noname feels because I've never tried to get an award.  Sure I've gotten the "Helpful Member" award, but that's just because it's my nature to offer my knowledge and help people.  I doubt I'd be able to win any other award even if I tried, and I'm okay with that.  I'm not the best at drawing or projects and I'm not a philosopher.  The fact is that they're just little images in your signature that show that others appreciate the things that you do.  Nice as they are, what matters is the people on this board and how we can make this community a better place.

What¥s the matter anyway? Just don¥t let a single website take control over you and your emotions and everything is fine. It¥s just virtual, how I said.  ;)

Oh don't worry; I'm not letting a website control me at all; I still have far too many other things to do... I have a job and other obligations... this did not stop me from doing what I had to... I would never let this come between me and my duties, even petty chores are more important.

And that¥s good to do it that way. Just don¥t think about these silly awards any longer. They are just fun like someone here said before :)

Ok, from the newbie who's foot just got in the door, so I don't feel like I have a...reference of time to really have witnessed enough to have a good comment on this, if you will and that made sense at all, but...

I'd say from what I've seen, I don't even remember if I read the whole award's thread, the systems set up in a pretty good and fair way for a forum, as alot of stuff on this forum has seemed.

I'm sure it does have everything to do with what I read in maybe the Admin blog(?) with the fact that this board is run by like six or more people essentially and that does seem to be contributing to the success I've seen that's got this newbie pretty impressed and thinking this board's not going ot just die on me shortly after I join, which has happened before.

Yeah, cut and dry simple I've never been a proponent of "every kid making the team". How people treat me tells me more about what they think of me really, but I'm not judging what anyone's said just stating my own opinion with that.

Truthfully if you guys have been making the awards system work for this long with no problems, just knowing human nature, then there's a kudos to that.

But not to sound perfect here, LBTfan13 don't feel bad, my personal feelings have gotten wrapped up way beyond what's needed on others places and with non cyber stuff, I think it happens to all of us really whether we say it or not :D

What I need to do to feel more like "one of the gang", I've decided is come up with some cute quote for under my avatar or something, it's so empty under there :D

The way I see it, the awards are just for fun and should not be done away with nor reduced to being hidden in member profiles.  Before any assumptions about me are made here, I will say for the record that I have hardly ever won any kind of reward.  The rare job of babysitting others' pets and getting paid for it is about the extent of rewards I ever receive.  I'd do it more often but being a full-time student and working (may start a second job shortly) don't allow much time for such a duty.  To be honest, I'm very surprised I was even nominated for Most Appreciated Member, let alone receiving numerous nominations.  Every member here is awesome and contributes to the GOF in their own fashions.  These awards are not intended to make members feel inadequate.  Besides, it's up to the members to decide who should receive what award, and their impressions of each other play a significant role in the decision-making.  The best thing to do is to be yourself and show other members the same respect they've shown ya.  That's how folks grow to like a person, be it online or in person.  Don't feel so down-hearted, for everyone here is valuable and appreciated, and that includes yourself ;).

Post by: Noname on June 02, 2009, 01:03:10 PM
Heh. That's just the problem. If I was shown more respect by some of the other members, I would have won something by now. I'm not accusing anyone specifically of disrespect, but I've done what you said for the last three years now. As it is, it is a matter of publicity and being showy more than anything else, as much as I hate to admit it. To that end, I am increasing my participation, and I have added an avatar, which I later found out that an avatar is something that almost ALL the winners have. If nothing else, being without it was like being a country without a flag, or a religion without a symbol...

Still, thank you for the advice. I will try to win the proactive award or the RP award; the former is a bit more likely than the latter...
