Sign language? Never thought I'd see something like that. Don't know why they'd use sign language; I thought closed captioned on film was efficient enough for those with hearing disabilities.

I think the reason this is so expensive is because this one is so rare. (Seriously, $1,000?)

According to a closer look at the picture, this version was made by "Talking Hands Inc.".

Talking Hands Inc is a company that is dedicated to helping deaf kids learn Sign Language.  I'm guessing this was one of their much earlier attempts.

Seriously though, I don't know how it would work.

Maybe in an upper or lower corner.   I forgot which one but long ago when I was a kid I recall some shows would have a person in what looked like a small window would do sign language and also lip sync with what the person was saying in the program.  Don't recall which corner, maybe upper left, or what sorts of programs had this.  I only rarely saw it but did once in a while.  

I think if I were deaf or very hard of hearing I'd prefer closed captioning in tv series and movies on dvd myself.

This is not that unusual.  In some cases, there would be signers in the bottom left or right hand corner, signing the words for deaf audiences.  The fact that there may be only a few copies of this actual video is the reason for the $1000 price, though I doubt anyone would buy it for that.

Now I'm reminded of a film called "Deafula", which was a film which had its dialogue told exclusively by having the actors "sign" it. No, I am not joking, such a film was made. I tried to watch it, but had to guess what was going on because I don't know sign language because I've never had a deaf acquaintance.
