Title: Server Is Down
Post by: landbeforetimelover on December 04, 2009, 04:54:35 PM
Well, I have to spend about an hour getting my network together.  It's a jumbled mess and things just aren't doing very well.  I hope what I have planned works.  No time to explain now though.  I gotta get to work. :smile

The server is back up but with limited reliability.  I wouldn't download anything that would take a long time to download because it could go out at any moment.  I'm still screwing around with stuff.

Okay.  The server is back up and 100% stable again.  I was trying to fix a vital security hole while at the same time prepare my network for the introduction of a dozen more computers.  It didn't work out exactly as I had planned, but I did make things better and I'm glad I did it. :)

Ah, it's fine.  I just wish I could afford more than 1 connection.  Just a few months ago I had five internet connections, but I had to drop all but my 50mbps connection in order to save some cash.  I couldn't keep paying all that money for internet. <_< Unfortunately since I can't have the LBT Server on its own separate connection, when I have to do network maintenance, it goes down.  Because of this, I don't maintain my network like I should.

I normally wouldn't care, but there's hardly EVER a time when someone's not connected or downloading/uploading something from/to my server.  I think the maximum time I get between connection attempts is like 40 seconds.  I'm not kidding!  I don't think Comcast monitors or counts uploads, because I'm sure I've went well over the 250gb/month limit and I've never gotten a phone call or my service turned off.

Damn.  I wish FiOS was available in my area.  UNLIMITED bandwidth and 25mbps up/15mbps down for only $69 a month.  I'd get one just for the LBT Server and get the 50mbps (which is only $114 a month BTW) for myself.  I'd actually be SAVING about $15 a month over Comcast! :anger

Do you ever meet with people who reconise you for all this website making and LBT stuff?

Question: Is it normal that the download speed from your server is only 40kbs? I knew I could get a lot more than that earlier on (or I'm just downloading when it's a busy time on your server).

Maybe the server is slow at the moment.

When I accidentally start Utorrent on any computer besides my download computer, it slows down my ENTIRE network, which includes the LBT Server.  Let me know if you continue to experience slow speeds.  It might be because I just switched my IP address yet again.  IP's work differently with people.  I know Petrie used to get TERRIBLE speeds from my server (2kps), but I'm pretty sure it's different now that my IP has changed.

But hey, I can get speeds of 250kps and above on the school computers, which is pretty amazing considering they have the SLOWEST internet in the world. :bang

Speeds should only be slow when there's like 10 or more people actively downloading large files at the same time.  I used to have a feature that could monitor the amount of global connections right on the server's page, but I removed that feature in my Vista/7 Theme due to limited space on the bottom bar.  I might add it back though.

I've learned to accept the fact that most people will never know or care how much work I put into everything.  Even my own mother doesn't realize how hard it all is.  The only people that understand are those who have done it before (or something similar) or those who know a decent amount about computers.  As for my work with LBT related stuff (i.e. TheLandBeforeTime.org and all my LBT projects), only you guys know about that kinda stuff.

Yeah.  I torrent almost everything before I buy it.  I'm definitely torrenting Windows 7 before I go spend $200 on the OEM version of Ultimate.  I made that mistake with Vista.  $369 in the TRASH until about six months ago when Vista FINALLY became acceptable....but by then Vista was obsolete! :anger

Glad to hear it.  Thanks for alerting me to problems.
