Title: So I need a discussion topic
Post by: Mumbling on March 03, 2010, 02:57:04 AM
Hey GoF

So I got a presentation for Social Studies (hear: politics) in a week or two. Now the issue is finding a subject. The criteria is:
- It has to be a topical subject
- It has to meet the definition of a social and policital problem
- It must have an international component (say, not only in the netherlands, but also in the USA)

The topic me and my partner first had in mind was... Women & stereotyping

However we thought maybe you guys knew a topic which we could talk more about.. we have to fill 40 minutes  :bang

Soo any suggestion is welcome.

In case you don't know the definition of a social or political problem, I will post them up as soon as I find my notebook  :nyah

That's a good choice.  You might also consider

- how countries have tried to help their needy citizens
- tax policies and how they affect citizens
- communication/cooperation between nations

Some other ideas may be stereotyping in general.   Including folks from other nations and how they are viewed in popular media due to stereotyping.  Effects some animals too, or maybe just here like ostriches in cartoons that I saw as a kid always put their hid in the ground when there is danger, ect.

How religion or culture can effect relations between nations.

Some very good and interesting suggestions have already been made. Two more I could think of are Nuclear power (Civilian use) and Gun control.

A presentation on the world economy might be able to fill up 40 minutes. You could start by describing the basics, like supply and demand, and then maybe get into the history of the world economy, highlighting the various crashes and their causes, and after that you could describe the economy today and detail possible solutions to present-day economic woes.

I don't know, I just got out of history myself, and we're in the midst of the Depression...I guess I'm kind of in an economic state of mind. I hope it helps! :)
