Title: New Video Page Look on YouTube
Post by: pokeplayer984 on March 31, 2010, 08:21:51 PM
YouTube has completed it's latest update.  For this one, when you go to the page to watch a video, you'll notice quite a few differences.

Here, let me just show you with a sample video.

Seriously, what do you guys think?

It's too complex for non computer people, but I don't really mind.  I gotta say though, I preferred the old system much more.  It's annoying having to click things in order to get the same amount of information that you could get before at a glance.  I mean, what's so great about not having to scroll through the video sidebar?  That's pretty much all that's been gained here.  The stats are better, but they could have easily just added that.

I dunno.  I've never been a fan of Youtube.  It seems to get worse with each passing day.

Okay, here are my biggest complaints.

1. I liked the scrolling of the videos more.

2. I liked there being the classic 5-star rating.

3. I prefer the reply box being down at the bottom.

Other than that, the changes are okay.  One big change I noticed is when you click on the drop arrow right next to the number of views of the video, you get to see the stats of the video.  You actually get to see how long it took to get as popular as it did and how fast.

Still, I preferred the old look more.  They could have just added in the last few things and I would've been okay with it.

I liked the old look better. I like how you can hide comments, which is what I preferred doing, but now I can't do that.

I don't like the changes on YouTube... the old channel design was better, and the old video page was better...

I think that most people will complain about the new style... it looks way too sterile.

I prefer the old way though they do seem to enjoy changing the way the page looks pretty often so I suspect they'll change pretty soon again.

That really didn't work though: the vast majority of videos I saw were either five stars (mostly) or one star.

Oh, and another thing I forgot to add.

It's the "History" link.  Such a thing is now only accessible through the "My Videos" link in the drop-down of your name.  To be honest, I liked it being on the front more.

Seriously YouTube, this is just worse. -_-

How didn't the 5-star rating worked? Personally I think that method was better than the current method; now I have to rate the video if I "liked it" or "didn't like it" just to see how well liked the video is. Not only is this inconvenient in my opinion, it's also much less descriptive. A 5-star rating, in my opinion, worked better than a simple "liked it" or "didn't like it" because it offered some "middle ground". Perhaps someone didn't like the video but didn't outright hate it, they could have chosen a 2-star rating instead of a 1-star. Perhaps someone liked the video, but not that much. They could pick a 4-star rating. And what if someone felt the video was a little good but not very bad? They could have chosen a 3-star rating. The new rating system now severely limits how a person can rate the video. They are no longer given much of an option, just a "liked" or "didn't like". That doesn't say much about the video.

I can't believe it... I thought it was an April Fool's joke...

YouTube HAVE to change it back, there's no other way! I think YouTube will get hundreds of thousands complains...
Most of my videos have a 3-Star-Ranking, and now? I think that most people would rate "didn't like", if they would rate a video of mine 3 stars out of 5 (there's an error, by the way. I can rate my own videos. Grrrreat... *facepalm*). Then my videos will go down the tubes.

One of my most popular videos had a 3-Star-Ranking, and now, with the new system:
Ratings for this video  (355 total)
Number of likes    163
Number of dislikes 192

So most people dislikes the video, and then this video will damage my reputation on YouTube, because most people will think: "Oh, most people dislikes this video... well, then I dislike it, too."

-.- I hate it, I hate it!!

It didn't work because your average person doesn't honestly rate every video, they generally either think "meh" and not even bother rating or "Yes! Five Stars!". The YouTube blog went into this in a little more detail, but it basically summed up that the vast majority of videos on YouTube are five stars. Thus, telling how popular a video was was a matter of seeing how many votes went into getting that five star rating, a workaround which they've essentially just taken and made standard.

http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/03...s.html#comments (http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/03/new-video-page-launches-for-all-users.html#comments)

YouTube HAVE TO change it if they don't want to lose most of their members!

I won't upload any new videos until the old star ranking system comes back, it's a kind of strike.

I'm guessing it's just me that actually likes it then. It's less complicated, which is good because really I want to be focusing on the video, not on it's statistics, or what other people think of it or whatever. If I choose to look at those things though I still can with little effort. I mean, when you get down to it, it's not even that different from the old style. It's mostly still there (and I'm pretty sure there's new stuff too), but it still manages to feel less cluttered.

Madness...THIS. IS. YOUTUUUUUBE!!!

But yes, I'm not too keen on the new layout either. The rating system looked fine as it was, now it looks very flawed. The comments are too difficult to read now as they all look squashed together. But then again, I don't have a Youtube account.

I just noted one thing they FINALLY perfected with this update and that's the ability to transfer information of your Viewing History between browsers.  Before, it would only record them in separate browsers.  Basically, what you watch in Firefox would not be there when you check it in Google Chrome.  They finally fixed that problem.

Does this update excuse them from the crappy layout?  No, it does not!  Why?  Because it's such a simple thing, they should have been able to do it sooner.

It seems to me that YouTube doesn't care about their members and that they won't change the design back. I really would like to delete my account now to show YouTube how much damage they give to the members who are registered since 2007... the only reason why I won't delete it is that I've been working on this account for years, and I really would like to beat 1 million video views. In addition, I don't like to disappoint all my "friends" and subscribers.

RIP YouTube 2005-2008

My rating for the new video page design: ★☆☆☆☆ (1 Star out of 5)

The people won't stop complaining, by the way.

I basically don't mind the change...I still can find what I'm looking for on a regular basis.  Seems that the people annoyed are the ones with active accounts and actually use youtube as a video sharing service.  The ones who just watch probably don't care as much (like me).  I haven't logged into my account in months.

I use YouTube as a way to advertise my site.  The ONLY reason I did something like that was simply because YouTube is so dang popular.  With this new layout, I can imagine everyone switching to most likely Vimeo soon.

Although I'm annoyed by the design myself, I won't switch sites. I feel it's rather silly to switch sites just because one doesn't like the new layout of a site.

And, most of the time, videos are blocked in Germany. -.-

Anyway, even with the new fail design I think it wouldn't be helpful to switch to another video site, because NO video site is more popular than YouTube (unfortunately).

When I search for "Waluigi" on YouTube, there are about 12,300 results and videos with more than 100,000 video views.

When I search for "Waluigi" on MegaVideo, there are only 29 results and these videos got no more than 5000 views!! :o

Here's what I filled in...

Quote
How satisfied are you with new version of the YouTube video page?
Extremely dissatisfied. <_<

Quote
Typically, how often do you use YouTube?
Multiple times per day. :p

Quote
What, if anything, did you find frustrating or unappealing about the new YouTube video page? What new features or capabilities would you like to see on the video page?
Everything. I want to see the OLD "features" and "capabilities" on the video page.

Quote
What do you like best about the new video page?
None.

Quote
Did you experience any problems or difficulties with the new video page in the last two weeks?
Yes, specifically: the fact that it sucks.
(lol, just kidding. I answered "No". I wouldn't wanna be dishonest :p)

Quote
If you could describe the new version of the YouTube video page in one word, what would it be?
Crap.

Quote
Did you take the guided tour of the new video page?
No.

Filled it in as well

Extremely dissatisfied

Typically, how often do you use YouTube?
Multiple Times Per Day

What, if anything, did you find frustrating or unappealing about the new YouTube video page? What new features or capabilities would you like to see on the video page?
I can't quickly find the channel of the one that uploaded a video. I'm having issues separating the comments from each other. I dislike that you cannot immediately see that you have a new message. The expanding Information box is really not useful.

What do you like best about the new video page?
How the channels look, especially in Firefox

Did you experience any problems or difficulties with the new video page in the last two weeks?
Yes, Specifically: trying to play a playlist from a user's channel.

If you could describe the new version of the YouTube video page in one word, what would it be?
Messy

Did you take the guided tour of the new video page?
Yes, I thought it was: for people that don't know how to use a computer. I can figure it all out myself, it just isn't very nice to work with.

"How satisfied are you with new version of the YouTube video page?"
-Extremely dissatisfied.

"Typically, how often do you use YouTube?"
-Multiple times per day.

"What, if anything, did you find frustrating or unappealing about the new YouTube video page? What new features or capabilities would you like to see on the video page?"
-I don't like the new "like" and "dislike" rating system. The old star system was much easier to use and view. The way the comments are arranged now is convoluted and confusing, as is viewing the related videos menu when viewing a video; the way everything was before the update made much more sense to me, and things were easier to use/identify.

"What do you like best about the new video page?"
-The new video pages are clean and slick-looking, but that's all I really like about them.

"Did you experience any problems or difficulties with the new video page in the last two weeks?"
-Yes, specifically: The "Related Videos" list does not show up occasionally.

"If you could describe the new version of the YouTube video page in one word, what would it be?"
-Disappointing.

"Did you take the guided tour of the new video page?"
-No.

"How satisfied are you with new version of the YouTube video page?"
As unsatisfied as this coffee you made me. I ASKED FOR A LATTE, FOOL!

"Typically, how often do you use YouTube?"
I lose count at 1, but that's mostly because I don't count how many times I use Youtube. What do I look like, and obsessive compulsive or something?

"What, if anything, did you find frustrating or unappealing about the new YouTube video page? What new features or capabilities would you like to see on the video page?"
It changed. I'd like to see more monkeys... oh, and those little curly straw things! What were we talking about again?

"What do you like best about the new video page?"
It's got videos on it? I mean, you couldn't possibly screw that... oh wait you did.

"Did you experience any problems or difficulties with the new video page in the last two weeks?"
My bread caught fire shortly after I put it in the toaster, and it's totally YOUR FAULT.

"If you could describe the new version of the YouTube video page in one word, what would it be?"
Antidisestablishmentarianism

"Did you take the guided tour of the new video page?"
I want my cookies back! Who stole my toothpicks? I'm a flying turtle! What are you looking at?

The main problem with it is what happens when you make it bigger part-way through.  Basically, the video starts over from the loading point and you have to wait until it does enough of it just to get back at the spot you were before.

I really liked the old one because of how fluent it was with going to full-screen.  There was no need to wait, it was just automatic.

So yeah, the problem is that it makes it more time consuming. :(

Well, it matters to me because of the fact that I do watch some subbed Anime on YouTube, and with how small some of the subs are in comparison to the video itself, let's just say you're better off full screen. :)

Anyways, looks like Google was told off about it and they changed it back.  Hopefully, they'll NEVER try that again. :yes

The World Cup Championships are currently being played in South Africa at the moment, and this is a reference to it. The "humming" is actually the sound of thousands of plastic trumpets called vuvuzelas, traditional at African soccer matches. The button is a joke reference to the World Cup.

This is what they said.

The Soccer Ball is actually in reference to The FIFA World Cup.  What you basically hear is the audience there. (I'm sure this will be gone by the time the World Cup is over.)

The one with the two screens is to make the video appear in another window.  It's currently not working properly.

The last one in that circle is actually just meant to change the size of the video screen.  It basically makes it bigger, but not Full Screen bigger.

I consider the first two completely useless.

Okay, now I must really hound them out for this new update.

*clears throat*

*takes a few deep relaxing breaths*

WHERE ARE THE RELATED VIDEOS!?  SERIOUSLY YOUTUBE, THIS IS NOT RIGHT AND YOU KNOW IT!!!

*lets out a deep sigh*

Okay, glad I got that out of my system, but yeah, that's the problem now.  The Related Videos you see at the side of the video are completely gone.
Okay two things.

1. Was it really necessary to shout?

and

2. What do you mean they are gone? I still see them plain as day. They are still there.

This was taken just today.

Well, they're gone for me, so I don't know what's up.

What browser are you using? If you're using Firefox, maybe a plugin is blocking them.

Well, whatever the problem was, they're back now.  So, nevermind! :)

They were having a maintenance. The site went on and off every few minutes or so. :p

No.

Cruelty rules. :lol XD
Wierd, I said the exact same things. :lol

Okay, more changes now.  Take a look at this.

I'm not sure how to feel about the new look of the "My Videos" section.

Also, here's what it looks like when you click on one of the following.

Recommended for You, Subscriptions, Favorites, Playlist

For this, I shall use "Favorites, but it's the same for the others as well.

Notice the difference here?

Your thoughts?  Because I do not approve myself. -_-

EDIT: Oh, and do you guys know the worst part?  It automatically makes you go to the next video on the list, even if you don't want to.  Nice!

Hate...the bar...must...destroy...bar...and...autoplay...

Other than that, I don't mind the new "My Videos" layout, really. :p

I fail to see what the fuss is about.  Does the site work, for free?  Been working for me since I've joined.

I'm very sure: IT SUCKS! Like all the other changes they have made. At first I even didn't know where the hell I can upload a video! Then a friend of mine told me that I can upload videos using the upload button at the top of the page:

I've never noticed that button! The new design is NOT user-friendly, it's just horrible and confusing!

Of course there are many complains about the new design, but YouTube doesn't care about it's users.

-.-

You have tried pressing the "Autoplay" button to turn it off, right?

The thing is, it's not switched off permanently. It switches itself on again on every new video you're watching. It's as if YouTube WANTS you to use the autoplay feature.

What are you talking about? I don't have that problem. When I turn autoplay off, it stays off until I go back to the main YT page. There's no automatically switching back as soon as I click a new video in the list.

Youtube's brilliant implementation of the "playlist bar" in action:

Nope, I still have that dreaded bar...

And...

Yeah you're right, that's what I was trying to say actually. It's just that I'm more used to clicking on the "Back" button to click on another subscription video. :p

Still, I hate that bar. It's kinda annoying when it pops up everytime you HOVER it (I have a habit of moving my mouse around while watching a video, lol). I'd like it better if it pops up only when I CLICK on it. I'd like it even better if they just remove it completely. It's pretty useless IMO.

EDIT:
A friend of mine just told me a hidden feature in YouTube - On ANY video, if you pause it and hold down the Left Arrow key afterwards, you'll start a classic game of Snake... right on the player's screen. :lol

Oh, and would you look at that, they've changed the logo again.  This is an interesting one because it changes every time you go to a new page.  I must admit that it's a neat feature, but it does not add to the experience.

No problems here and I actually logged in and managed my videos, uploaded something new.  Not one problem.  I'm surprised youtube can take Mastroka videos...I thought for sure it would reject the clip I sent it.

YouTube increased the maximum video length from 10 to 15 minutes!

That's the best thing YouTube has done since "YouTube Insight".

What I want to know is if the limit really is 15 minutes, or is it 15:59.  Did they make it exact or not?  Someone test this.

Okay, you watch until the end of a video and you get something like this now.

Your thoughts?

As for me, yet again, I'm not sure how to feel about the change.

I want the old Youtube back too.

Much worse is those tasteless Featured Videos that can't be disabled!
