I pray to God that it's not true...I grew up with that guy...I used to watch his shows all the time when they were on Animal Planet...oh please say it was a false report!

Sadly, it does appear to be true. :cry

This looks like a very reputable article, discussing the scenario.

I watched his shows from time to time, as well.  He was a very entertaining host, and will be dearly missed.

I've lattely just stopped watching his shows, I got bored after a while... But he was a great man, and died doing what he loved, I guess that's what matters. Saddly he'll be missed...

I saw the news on Sky News and CNN, it's completely true \:

NO!  This can't be!  :cry Steve Irwin was killed?  I remember going to his Zoo when I was in Australia 2 years ago.  I never had a chance to meet him.  :cry I really liked watching his shows on Animal planet, he was such a friendly and funny guy.  He didn't deserve to die the way he did.  :cry2

I agree with that, but it's also pretty ironic. He's wrestled crocodiles, held Bermese pythons...and he got killed by a freaken docile water creature.

He took many risks with the type of work he did...sooner or later you knew something would go wrong.  RIP Steve Irwin...you amazed many with your show. :)

I didn't know Irwin, but I could imagine he would have prefered this way of dying from being hit by a car or the like.
He was taking huge risks and I wonder if he thought much about the risks. I feel especially sympathetic for his wife and his two children.

I was going to have him in my Empire Strikes Back parody but I never finished the parody because I ran out of funny ideas.  And I am really not going to do it now. :cry2  :cry2  :cry2  :cry2

It was truly a freak accident, stingrays are very friendly creatures, usually.. they only use their barbs in defense, when they feel threatened or frightened, and getting simply stratched by the barb is EXTREMELY painful, if it pierces in the skin , it causs the boddy to staet shutting down. If it hits the chest, its fatal. In Irwin's case, it pierced his heart, and I bet he died immediately. Stingray venom is among the most potent toxins in the world.. and there's no antidote...

That's probably true, Malte. I'm pretty sure he was aware of the risks...and he probably wouldn't want us hating the stingray. Granted, Steve didn't know it was there (it was underneath the sand, and I think Steve swam close to the sand to get a different perpective of what he was shooting with the camera) and I guess the stingray was surprised so it burst out and whipped its tail around...which is kind of strange, considering those animals are really docile. But eh, panic makes everything do strange things. I mean, if the barb had been slammed into any other part of his body aside from his chest and into his heart, Steve probably would have made it.

If it didn't pierece the skin, that is... He would have died if it had pierced the skin anywhere, there's no antidote for stingray toxin...

Sting rays aren't toxic, Nick.  Or at least the one he was doing a dotumentary on.  But bacteria builds up around the barb and can cause serious infections.  But this barb pierced his heart, so he died instantly, I don't remember ANY sting ray being poisinous, at least around the Australia coast.

From what I heard he died after the medical officers that arrived on the sence failed to save his life and died as they tried to save him not instantly... I seen a few other sources saying the same thing. but I guess that don't make a real differences to it all.

From what I read he was already dead when the medicals arrived. As you said Threehorn, it doesn't make any real difference. The articles I read pointed out that, while the poison of sting rays usually isn't lethal to humans (Irwin is the third Australian in history to die from a sting ray sting) the sting itself shouldn't be underestimated. In the article it was compared to a bayonet.
I'm afraid that due to all his experience Irwin probably grew somewhat to careless about the risk, that may come from the fascinating creatures he was dealing with, if they feel threatened.

Well they said he probably died instantly.  That doesn't mean he did, but if anybody was shot, or stabbed in he heart has died in a matter or seconds.  From what I know, anyway.

The barbs do contain toxin, as well as bacteria Cyber.  So infection is problem, when you are scratched by the barb, the pain comes from the venom, and there is a risk of infection from the bacteria in the barb as well...

I only heard infection.  Because one time and Australian girl stepped on a Stingray, got the barb stuck in her foot, and got such a serious infection that she had to have her foot amputated.

apparently Irwin was able to pull out the barb before he died. That's what the latest reports are saying...

His death was caught on film by one of his cameramen. According to the reports of those who have seen it it showed Steve pulling the barb out of his chest and passing out before dying.

You know, I always thought his line of work would one day kill him, but I did not expect him to go like this.  Let's just say the way I imagined involved a croc.

Anyways, this is very sad to hear.  I may not be a fan of him, but I have heard what he did in his line of work.  He will be truly missed. -_-
