Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: Pterano on May 13, 2011, 10:32:53 AM
While I'd love to say that this thread is about asking the real Pterano, I can't make such lofty claims. :p But since I'm new here, and saw several other threads like this, I figured I may as well. Go ahead and ask away!

Do you play any video games?
Yes I do in fact. I currently own uh... let's see. A PS3, PS2, Dreamcast, three N64s (one belongs to a friend of mine that left it at my place), a DS, and a Gamecube. I also like PC games as well. As for genres... I really like a wide mix. RPGs are a big for me, but I enjoy almost anything really.

I did mention that I would ask.
What type of mythology do you like?  Are there any stories that you enjoy?

What are some of your favorite video games?

And what tv shows/movies/ect do you like?
Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: Pterano on May 13, 2011, 07:00:16 PM
Saft: I think I like Greek mythology the best. I used to be really in to Norse and Egyptian, but became more Greek centric in college. I'd say my favorite stories would be... well Heracles and the Twelve Labors. In fact, our board game was based heavily around the completion of the Twelve Labors. I think my favorite story though overall from that era is definitely the Odyssey. I love all the things that Odysseus ran into on his travels, and I also love how the Theban "arc" melds into the Trojan "arc" pretty seamlessly. Cause you had Oedipus, who had Eteocles and Polynices, who in turn had Thersander and Laodamus. Thersander kills Laodamus, becomes King of Thebes, and later is present in the Greek force that sets sails for Troy, though sadly, Thersander does not make it as he's killed en route, and thus Thebes has no forces at Troy. But yes, I really like what happens to Odysseus afterward, as it's so epic and larger than life.  :smile

Vonboy: Some of my favorite video games would be the Uncharted series on PS3, the Final Fantasy series on various Playstation consoles, Xenogears on PS1 (one of my all time favorites), Suikoden 1 and 2 on PS1, the Ace Attorney series on the DS, Myst and Riven for PC (one of the first games I owned in fact was Myst), L4D 1 and 2 on PC, Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast, Metal Gear Solid series on the Playstation consoles, and my favorite game of last year would definitely be Heavy Rain for PS3. I'm looking forward to the release of LA Noire in a few days for this year.

TV Shows: I'm really into House, but not as much as I used to be. I really like Castle as well, and I think that's probably my favorite show on TV at present. I was into The Event, but they're canceling it, so I'm kind of not bothering anymore, though it was good while it lasted. I also like Fringe, and sometimes watch stuff on SyFy. For animated shows, I love Rocko's Modern Life, Gargoyles, TaleSpin, Beast Wars, and Batman, the Animated Series. I also thought Animalia, that Australian show, was OK, but it's off syndication now, so I can't really watch it anymore, though I did see the show's finale. I like some anime too, namely Fullmetal Alchemist (both shows), Mushishi, and... I think those are probably my big two in terms of anime.

Movies: Hmmmm... I like a lot of movies XD My friend and I go the theater like once a week to see a film. I love Pixar's films, as I think they're amazing, and my favorite one is probably Ratatouille. I grew up with the Disney Renaissance films as well, and I like those too. Uh... let's see. My favorite all time movie is probably the Shawshank Redemption. My favorite movie of last year was Shutter Island, and my favorite movie so far this year was I Saw the Devil, a South Korean film (which technically came out last year but I saw it this year when it had its limited release in the US). I've also liked Rango and Rio this year, and I also saw Fast Five, which was my first Fast and Furious movie. It was OK. Kinda silly, but at least it was entertaining.

OK that's a really interesting question. XD

I remember it rather clearly. It was the night of release day for the seventh Land Before Time, and I was um... 14? Yeah? Yes 14 (after I looked it up XD). Anyways, I still played with my sister back then, who was 12 at the time. She had seen the movie, but I had not. She said she was going to introduce me to the plot of the new film by dividing up our LBT toys, as we often did back then, and I took Petrie as one of the characters I'd be "playing". Well she introduced Pterano pretty quickly into the "game" (I guess you could call it? I dunno what we called that back then), and revealed him to be Petrie's uncle. I was pretty surprised. I was like wait... Petrie has an UNCLE!? And she played him pretty well to the T, as she'd seen the film earlier in the day, and I was like wow... this character is warm, and likeable and awesome! He's an awesome uncle!

Then of course we got into the whole he's not REALLY a "good guy", but a bit more complicated than that. However, I could tell he wasn't just your average film antagonist, and I became intrigued, as for some reason, and even to this day, I'm a huge sucker for the redemption character. The character who starts off shady but grows throughout the story and amends in such as way as to do something admirable. Well after playing through the storyline of the seventh movie for a bit, I was like "Yeah I have to see this movie now" and went and watched it.

I liked Pterano even more after I saw it, and once again, I'm a sucker for the character that slowly grows out of his or her initial not so likeable type, and undergoes a change for the better. He was just so fascinating to me at the time, and he quickly became my favorite LBT character, replacing Hyp, who has a similar type of makeup. Him being voiced by Michael York was a bonus, as I already liked some of his work from before. XD

So yeah, that's how I got into Pterano. XD

What books do you enjoy reading?
Yeah I know, that would have been... amazing. XD

Hmm books. All kinds. XD History books especially, but I do like fiction as well. I'll admit I'm a sucker for romances, but not the easy kind of romance. I like strife and hardship and not initially entering into the romance, but having to watch the main character really work for it, and have a lot of trip ups in the middle. My favorite all time book is Great Expectations, as it's amazing how Dickens managed to tie ALL the characters together, and everyone basically got what they deserved at the end of it. I really like Yukio Mishima as well (controversial though he is), as he's an amazing author, and Spring Snow was a great book. The climax of that story just literally blew my mind.

I really like Willa Cather too, as her short story, Paul's Case, quite captured the mentality of a depressed and hopeless individual, and I thought she had such a good insight into that type of mentality.

James Baldwin is pretty good too, as his imagery is really top notch.

Uhhh yeah, I'd say those are some of my favorites.
Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: Saft on May 13, 2011, 07:31:05 PM
Great Expectations is also a favourite although I'll admit I do prefer to read Oliver Twist or David Copperfield.

So I take it that you get attached to characters quite a lot?

Also, do you read any manga?
Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: trulyfantasticme on May 13, 2011, 07:34:00 PM
So you've been a fan for 10 years! Just like any other Pterano fan on this site...

I agree, he does start off shady but become admirable. He's awesome for that. I remember when I saw cold fire for the first time in like three years.  :lol I didn't remember him very well, but I could tell he was good from the start. Must've been that accent of his... :lol

Just another question. Do you ever sing Very Important Creature?
Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: Pterano on May 13, 2011, 07:43:00 PM
Saft: Yes, I like character driven stories. I like dissecting people and getting into their heads (not in the literal sense!). If a character is well written, it makes me a happy reader. As for mangas... I don't as much. I'm more of a graphic novel kind of person I guess. The Watchmen and Ghost in the Shell being some of my top favorites. But yea, as I think about it, haven't really read much manga. I tried to get into it, but could just never keep up I suppose.

Trulyfantasticme:  :DD That's a rather hilarious question. I guess I sort of do? Like maybe sing a few of the lyrics here and there, but I don't think I really sing the full song anymore. I just watched it today in fact on youtube, as I haven't seen the movie in years. I guess I probably used to, years ago. XD

Now for the generic question; do you have any pets?  And if not, would you want one?
Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: Pterano on May 13, 2011, 07:56:47 PM
My mom has a dog, a pit bull/lab mix. It's the sweetest thing and a pretty awesome pet. I guess my ideal pet would either be a skunk or like... some sort of mustelid, like a ferret, or a stoat, as mustelids are my favorite family of animals.  :smile Too bad you can't really own the latter, but ferrets are doable.

I'm allergic to cats, so wouldn't want one of those. :p
Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: Saft on May 14, 2011, 12:36:35 PM
Ferrets work although a skunk would be cool to have....can you imagine taking that for walks?

Generic question again but if you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Title: Ask Pterano

Post by: Pterano on May 14, 2011, 10:37:35 PM
Saft: I have walked a skunk in fact, back when I used to live in a state where owning skunks is legal!  :smile They're adorable.  :DD

Well I've been to a lot of places I wanted to visit, but there is still such much to see in this world! I would say right now my top destination is Sapporo, in Japan, as I was considering living in the country for a few years, and I've always wanted to see the Ice Festival there, so yeah, Sapporo, Japan would be a top choice.

Nick22: I LOVE Redwall! In fact, my own site is semi-based on Redwall, though it draws from several other sources as well. I like Tolkien as well, and read his trilogy once a year.

No hablo espaÒol, mais, je peux parler franÁais. J'ai ÈtudiÈ la langue dans l'universitÈ pendant quatre annÈes, et ai eu encore quatre ans dans le lycÈe.

I think that last bit was right... high school is lycÈe? Anyways yeah. I cannot speak Spanish, but I can speak French. Had about eight years of it, plus I studied abroad in Quebec for a Summer to help improve my conversational skills. I only know bits and pieces of other languages. I know some Dutch, as I did a host stay in Brussels (and I have a good number of relatives living in Flanders, as part of my family on my dad's side is Belgian), last Summer, but I really don't know beyond very basic sentences. So I couldn't really hold a good conversation in Dutch unfortunately.

A few are on my agenda, yes. Two that come to mind are Kung Fu Panda 2 next week, and Cars 2 right before my Birthday. Possibly Cowboys and Aliens as well. This year just isn't that impressive looking for me in terms of Summer releases, as most everything is a remake or an adaptation of something else. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but so far, there's only been a few movies that have caught my eye.

As of the moment, nothing specific, only generic ideas. The Past That Yawns Behind was a very old idea of mine that I never wrote, so I'm glad I'm writing it now.

I think if I do write another one, I'd love to do one that focuses on either Chomper or Hyp, as they're my next two favorite characters behind Pterano. :DD I also feel I could get the most out of those two characters in terms of a story at the moment, if I chose either one.

Title: Ask Pterano

Hmmm good question. I really like Rocko's Modern Life from Nickelodeon. That's probably my top favorite. Other cartoons I like are Talespin from the Disney Afternoon, Gargoyles from just Disney, Animalia from well... it was PBS, but it's various public broadcasting stations now, Beast Wars (second gen Transformers), Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Dragonball Z, Zoids (but mostly the first two seasons, being Chaotic Century and Guardian Force), the Angry Beavers, Digimon (once again, the first two seasons), Batman: The Animated Series, and... that's pretty much all I can think of right now off the top of my head in terms of cartoons I really like. I've also managed to meet the writers/creators of Talespin, Gargoyles, and Beast Wars, which is another reason I like those particular shows, as their staff is not secluded.

What kinds of movies do you like?
Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: Pterano on August 19, 2011, 10:51:56 AM
Hmmm... an interesting question. I view movies probably differently than a lot of others do. I like going to the movies to analyze and critique them, though personally at the same time I don't like most movie critics out there. If I had to pick favorite films, the ones from Pixar would definitely rank up there, as they're really in a league of their own. I'd say my favorite from Pixar is definitely Ratatouille, as I went in to that movie with exceedingly high expectations, and came out simply blown away. Any movie that can do that is worthy of my respect.

My friend and I will go to the movies to see some of the less well known yet critically acclaimed films. We'll also sometimes go to see the latest work of a director we really like, or enjoying analyzing. Examples of this would be David Cronenberg's "Eastern Promises", or Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus." I guess you could say we tend to be a bit more avant garde in choosing the movies we'll see together. :p :lol We were on a Korean movie stint for awhile earlier this year, as there was a Korean film festival going on in DC and the environs that we were checking out at the time, and we even got have a Q&A session with the director of two of them (Im Sang-soo, for "The Housemaid", and "The President's Last Bang", both excellent films), and that was pretty awesome.

I really like animated films though, as to me, animation is not just for kids, it's simply another medium of telling a story on film. I can be hit or miss with Dreamworks, as they make great films and other films I thought were not so great. I like Blue Sky Studios too, as their movies are always fun.

I guess I judge a movie by a few things. Story writing, characters, and entertainment value, though I don't always judge a movie by all three simultaneously. Most movies tend to be stronger in some fields but lacking in others. I guess some of my top films... if I had to name them... would be "The Shawshank Redemption", "I Saw the Devil", "Ratatouille", "Shutter Island", "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters", and... I guess that's all I can think of right now for movies off the top of my head. I know there are more, but I'm not at home at the moment, I'm at work, so can't really look at my movie shelf :p '

Anyway, I hope that wasn't TOO confusing. :p As said, I guess you could say I'm a bit strange when it comes to movie viewing. XD When it comes down to it, I really just enjoy seeing movies, and I tend to look at the from a lot of different angles. My friend probably had something to do with this, as he's very into films himself, so yeah. To us it's more like a hobby than a pastime, if that makes any sense. :p

I do believe it is in the final chapter...

How long have you been a Beach Boys fan?
Title: Ask Pterano
Post by: Pterano on August 24, 2011, 10:48:07 PM
Well, a good question. I mention it in the final chapter, but there's a bit more to it than that. It's a rough copy of a saying taken from Max Payne, if I recall. He mentions "The past is a gaping hole. You try to run from it, but the more you run, the deeper it grows behind you, its edges yawning at your heels." I really liked that saying, as it demonstrated how much the past can torment someone. In Pterano's case, the past was a nightmare he couldn't wake up from, constantly there, yawning behind him. You can't truly run from it, as it did happen in reality, and the only way to get over it is to face it... as he did. :)

So that's where it comes from. :)

TFM: I used to like them a long time ago, growing up, as my dad would listen to them a lot, among other things. I used to like all the albums up to Pet Sounds, but then I got out of my oldies phase. It wasn't until... I guess either last year or the year before... probably last year, when I REALLY started getting back into them again, and more particular, into Brian Wilson. My dad gave me his latest two albums... one in 2008 (Lucky Old Sun), and the other in 2010 (Reimagines Gershwin), and I was really impressed, and started listening to the Beach Boys again in earnest.

I picked up a rather extensive book on them that follows their career day by day, and like, I started out with their first album, and just slowly started working my way through them all. It's so amazing how Brian developed as a songwriter, as he wrote layer upon layer of lush, rich music in his songs, and produced all his own music too, which not many bands did at the time. He's just really impressive to me so yeah... I'd say once I started hearing his latest albums I got back into him, and the Beach Boys. I'm trying to get all their albums. :smile

@StrutEggStealer: I think movies has been asked, but not music. For music, I like a wide variety of everything really, and my iPod will be full of things from all eras and genres. XD Pretty much the only genre of music I DON'T like is modern-day rap. :p I DO like some of the earlier hip-hop from the 80s, but the modern stuff I can do without. :p My favorite focus of music would definitely be music from the 60s, with my all time favorite band being the Beach Boys (Brian Wilson's stuff in particular, but as a true aficionado, I have all of their 29 studio albums and all six of their concert albums XD), and music in Bobby Darin's style, or such from the 40s and 50s. :yes That kind of "big band" style. :) Also, video game soundtracks. :DD My absolute favorite composer in that genre is Nobuo Uematsu of the Final Fantasy series (whom I met last year! Lifelong goal come true!), though Yasunori Mitsuda comes in a VERY close second. I also like some movie composers too, with Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and John Barry being my favorites.

As for movies, movie-going is one of my favorite pastimes with friends, and we like seeing a wide variety of movies, but mostly try to focus on the more critically acclaimed ones, or some more artsy "under the radar" type films. Some of my favorite directors are: Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Soderbergh, John Glen, Sam Mendes, Paul Schrader, Terrence Malick, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, and almost anything Pixar puts out. :DD I also still enjoy "kids' movies" too, depending on what it is, namely a lot of the movies I grew up with, and some newer ones as well (the Disney Renaissance being some of my all time faves). I'm also a huge fan of the United Artists' Bond films, as the production that went into each of those over the years has always impressed me, with the cool stunts and big budgets, innovative cinematography, and great soundtracks. :DD I like movies with symbolism in them too... with things going on under the surface of the film that aren't outright stated on screen. But yeah, I'm pretty easy when it comes to movie watching. XD
