Title: Background music
Post by: kjeldo on May 29, 2011, 06:19:36 AM
What has really caught my attention latety is the beautifull orchestrated background music.
i am an fan of classic rock and powerballad (so i will always turn my back to you, Bieber!) but i find a little orchestra music now and then very soothing.

They also nearly always manage to add some extra emotion to the situation, an example would be in LBT 8 when the gang (minus ducky and spike) make a snow spike. thanks to the music i could ultimately feel how much they actually miss him.
and then little time later when Ducky's mother asks where she is, the music gives it an little tensioned feel...

How do you fellas think of this? :)

I totally agree. There's nothing that can really be said about James Horner's original score. It just punctuated the activity onscreen so well. But what many may fail to notice, is it is pretty much entirely made up of about 5 different melodies! It's just how they play it, which instruments, which tempo, and such a melody as "If We Hold On Together" can be used to be heartwarming or heartrending. Contrast, for instance, when it was used during Mama Longneck's death scene, and its use at the very end. Exact same melody, just played differently.

But Michael Tavera did a great job in the sequels when he joined. I especially like the music he does for the opening sequences. How he can make huge, sweeping epic pieces, like in numbers 5, 6, and 7, or reallysubtle quiet pieces like in number 11. Also, I kinda like how sometimes, he'll take the melodies from one of the musical numbers, making it into the primary melody of the orchestral soundtrack, or used it as some sort of reprise in the soundtrack.

Yeah, personally, I see the soundtracks as one of the best aspects of the series. I just wish they'd release the music from the sequel as an OST

Me agree... the background music caught my attention as well. Since, I like such beautiful instrumentals or orchestras, I always look forward to those kind of music.

I like all of the different versions of the instrumental of If We Hold On Together, including the background music where the gang found the great valley... The orchestra is just beautiful. Almost made me cry though...

Also, the background music in the credits in some movies like The Land Before Time IV is also great and beautiful  :exactly

There is one little bit of music and visuals that always grabs me. It's a brief little clip, about 5 seconds, in number 8. It's the brief shot of Littlefoot walking among the trees before he sees his Grandpa talking to mister Thicknose. It just works so well! The cheery, bouncy music, Littlefoot's pace and gait, it's almost as if it's orchestrating the music he would otherwise be whistling or humming to himself!

I love the soundtrack for the original film. Whenever I listen to it, I feel kind of nostalgic, which is wierd since I'm only 17. One of the best soundtracks ever, in my opinion  :yes

and that the music suddenly stops when he also sees mr. thicknose as part of the 'unpleasant suprise' :)
