LBT Fanfiction / Spike In Fan-Fiction
« on: October 12, 2009, 03:10:53 PM »
One trend I've noticed a lot in fan fics is that there is not a lot of love for Spike, especially since he doesn't talk all that much.  I admit I'm guilty of omitting him or discounting his presence a lot, but mainly because he rarely contributes to the plot.  In the Big Freeze the Spike/Tippy plot was cute (Tippy was a boy here, but I think he was later changed into a girl)  but it was not very interesting as a whole and didn't develop the Land Before Time storyline (everything went right back to the way it was).

Do other writers feel the way I do in that Spike doesn't really contribute to the Land Before Time that much?

I have nothing against his character, but sometimes I find the Spike based off-shoot of the movies and TV series to be annoying and unproductive.

Role Play Discussion / LBT: Future Wars Discussion
« on: October 06, 2009, 09:47:28 PM »
This is an RP idea that I considered making into a fan-fic but decided that it might be better as a more interactive thing.

With Serris' permission, I'm putting together a portrayal of Land Before Time: Twilight Valley in a futuristic setting involving technology, urban metropolises, and conflicting ideologies.

This RP will be very open - what's going to happen is world events are going to proceed in a planned manner (ie Attacks, Food Crisis, and Promotions/Deaths of heroes) while the members of the RP define the storyline that occurs while events conspire in the background.

This doesn't mean character's actions will be unimportant, but what it does mean is that the scale of the conflict is much greater then a few small engagements or other doings.

You may play a character of any dinosaur race (no humans), but keep in mind that the world is divided into two main factions:

The VDA, or the Valley Defense Alliance

The main leaf-eater nation whose goal is to protect their holdings and ensure the prosperity of their societies.  Life under VDA rule is one of freedom and prosperity, but is also defined by racial divisions, particularly in the VDA Military Arm - called the VDF (Valley Defense Forces).  All recuits into the VDF are sorted and assigned duties based on their race - this is non-negoitable.  The VDA stigma is "Every Race has it's Place".

As a part of the VDA you can be:

Civilian - of any leaf-eater or omnivore race
Soldier - of any leaf-eater or omnivore  race (if you choose this you must conform to VDF regulations and practises - in otherwords expect to be assigned a role by the military)
Civilian - sharptooth resident or defector (expect some abuse from mistrust)

-Note- If you want to a member of the Gang of Five, you must ask first.

VDF Soldiers are assigned these duties based on their race:

Fastrunners - Infantry divisions and Light Vehicles
Spiketails - Heavy Weapons and Field Artillery
Threehorns - Armour Division
Swimmers - Medical Battalion
Flyers - Airforce and Bomber Squadrons
Longnecks - Experimental Weapons and Research

Claw:

Sharptooth cities are ruled by a single tyrannical ruler, who decides who receives what food and who deserves to eat on any particular day.  Every city like this has a sub-network where the leaf-eaters are kept, completely ignorant of their impending fate until they are selected for “consumption” by the managing AI.  The leaf-eaters who do are understandably never seen again.  Even using these harvesting practises every sharptooth cannot be fed, so the ruling powers are forced to attack and assimilate other leaf-eater groups to keep their populations in check – both through war dead (less mouths to feed) and through the harvesting of the corpses of the conquered.  The worst of the war-like sharptooth nations is known as Claw, which holds its capital at a place known by its old name as Claw Valley.

Claw is a vicious and brutal society, where only those who are valuable to the nation are fed while the others are left to scrounge for scraps on the streets.

Characters who are part of Claw can be:

Civilian sharptooth or omnivore
Soldier sharptooth or omnivore (less rigid then the VDF, but still defined slightly by race)
Leaf-eater defector (note you must be of value to Claw, or you will be eaten!)

...

Alright here are a few ground rules (trust me they are few):

1. VDA and Claw characters must hate/kill each other on sight - unless VDA and Claw have signed a peace agreement or alliance (pff it would take an alien invasion for something like that to ever happen...)

2. Sharptooth defectors are generally looked down upon in the VDA, but they can still prove themselves.  Don't feel I'm targetting you if the characters of the world aren't treating you right.

3. Leaf-eater defectors in Claw have it even worse - be useful or be dead.  Even then, there are sharpteeth who would kill to get a piece of your hide.  Watch yourself on the streets.

Other then that feel free to let your wildest desires come true - but don't be surprised if bombs suddenly start dropping!  :lol

...

If your interested in joining this RP, express it and post a character profile! I will decide after a week or so if it's worth carrying through.

LBT Fanfiction / Far Away Home Poll

I'm making this poll as part of my fan-fic to see generally which plot you like to read about.  The results of the poll will influence the direction I take with the character development, but they won't change the ending of the story.

Thank you for taking the time to vote in the poll, as well as to read my fan-fic.  I appreciate all of your reviews!

The Fridge / A Change in Title
« on: September 23, 2009, 09:21:03 PM »
After spending a few months with my self proclaimed "Red Alert Ambassador" title I've decided it's time for me to change it up, and since the General of the Great Valley is already taken I'm going for a new one.

"Master of the Chronosphere"

If you don't know what a Chronosphere is, it's a matter transportation device used for instantly moving from one place on the planet's surface to another, through space and time if calculated to do so.  It was created by Einstein in 1944 as a method for Allied ships to evade Nazi submarines, and since then has grown to be the most useful weapon in the Allied arsenal.

It kinda looks like this,

Tell me what you think of the new title, and of course if you want a free ride back in time.  :lol

2. The Mirage Tank

3.  The Pacifier Field Artillery Vehicle

4. The Future Tank

LBT Fanfiction / The Land Before Time: Far Away Home
« on: August 18, 2009, 06:12:33 PM »
Now that Storm Tide is coming to a close Far Away Home will be my project until Christmas. It is far more then just a sequel... it's actually a completely new and seperate story, albight with some returning characters.  Because of the preferences of the readership, it will be written in the standard story style and not by my signature script techniques.

I would like to specially thank Sky for letting me use his characters.

Here I have provided links to his previously drawn pictures of them to provide a good image for readers who enjoy picturing them:

Sky & Guido:

Star:

Sky, Star, and Glide:

Map of the World:

The Black Dawn:

Act I: The Hunt For the Occular

Act II: The Tyrant King's Wraith

Act III: The Black Dawn

Eybron:

Synopsis:

Littlefoot and the gang of seven go on their greatest adventure yet as they push the boundaries of their world into places far beyond the horizon. It starts when they meet Sky, an ambitious and intelligent adventurer who leads them to seek his "Far Away Home" with only the aid of a tiny piece of volcanic glass he calls "The Occular".  On the way they are targeted by a vicious maniac, Eybron, who uses the artistic masterpeices of their lost ancestors as devestating weapons capable of incalculable destruction. In the end, only Littlefoot and the gang can stop him before he turns his sights on the Great Valley and all is lost.

...

The Story will progess in four acts, all of which are five to seven chapters long.

Act 1: The Hunt for the Occular
Act 2: The Tyrant King's Wraith
Act 3: The Black Dawn
Act 4: The Eye of the World

...

As one last note I would like to state that this is the greatest story I have ever attempted to write and it will be very difficult to finish it if I get no reviews - both positive and negative. Please read it and tell me what you think! If you find that it's not to your liking tell me why and I'll make sure to fix it as I go along. :angel

So without further delay... here is the first chapter of LBT: Far Away Home.

LBT Fanfiction / The Funniest Scene in LBT: RoST
« on: July 25, 2009, 01:20:58 PM »
This scene is one from my fan-fic called Rise of Storm Tide. It's quite a long story so understandably most of you wouldn't reach this far in to read it. Because of this I thought it was a good thing to post seperately in additon to within the story because it's quite far in. I was laughing to myself while writing it, so I hope you like it too.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Setting: Morning lit up the Great Valley. The trees seemed to hum with the joy of the day’s first light and the early birds went after their worms or – in the case of many fliers here – the best tree-stars. This particular part of the valley wasn’t thick with woods or open plains but was a mixture of both. This made the area especially ideal for longnecks, which had lots of space to move about while they went about their breakfast.

<Grandma and Grandpa Longneck casually grazed on one of the trees. Other older longnecks were also around, taking their fill before the young ones woke up. By coincidence both Grandma and Grandpa go for the same bushel at once at once and touch noses>

Grandma: <laughs>

Grandpa: <looks away in embarrassment>

Guido: <yelling> Watch out! Ahhh!

<As if blown there by the wind, Guido suddenly rockets from the air into the tree making a hard impact amongst the leaves. Clearly he has to work on his landings. The branches cushion him, but they also tangle up his wings>

Grandma: <concerned> Guido… are you alright?

Guido: Oh yeah I’m fine, just fine <laughs> But umm, you think you could help me out? … please?

Grandma: <pushes aside the branches so Guido can get out>

Guido: <brushes himself off> I get so many sticks and pricklies in these wings it’s not funny… unless you like to laugh of course <nervously>…like me.

Grandpa: Is there anything else we can help you with?

Guido: <rubs the back of his neck> Yeah I was just wondering…you know… <he couldn’t believe he was asking this> … How do I get a girl to like me?

<Grandma and Grandpa look at each other in disbelief>

Grandma: <smiles and looks at Grandpa> I think you should answer this one.

Grandpa: Well I…ah… <begins> the most important thing to remember Guido is that they are more interested in themselves then they are in you <Grandma gives him a dirty look>…but that’s only at first! If you talk about her rather then about yourself, then she will always want to be around you.

Guido: <counts on his fingers> Talk about her… got it.

Grandma: <shoots a glance at Grandpa> Be considerate of her feelings… there will be times when she will need her space.

Grandpa: <snickers but disguises it as a sneeze>

Grandma: <Continues> … Show her you love her by giving her gifts, and taking your time for her.

Grandpa: But be strong and bold, a good mate will always look for confidence–

Grandma: <cuts in> –Demonstrate that you can be a good provider for her children.

Guido: <getting confused, he’s running out of fingers> Umm…okay.

Grandpa: <under his breath> Wake her up repeatedly in the middle of the night with your snoring…

Grandma: <sarcastically> Trick her into closing her eyes so you can sneak a kiss!

Grandpa: <angry> …and then get up early so you can eat the best tree stars before she does!

Grandma: <yells back> Insult her father on every occasion you can!

Grandpa: <stomps in rage> I never did that!

Grandma: Of course you did it was no wonder he never liked you!

Guido: <puts his hands over his face. This was horribly embarrassing>

Grandma: …and you–

Topsy: <interrupting> What’s all this racket…some of us are trying to sleep!

<He backs up in surprise as both longnecks shoot him venomous glares>

Grandpa: <calms down> Mr. Threehorn we were just discussing with Guido about how to be attractive to a mate.

Guido: <waves nervously as Topsy gives him a disgruntled glance. Evidently, he didn’t want to spread around the news he’d found a girlfriend>

Tospy: <snorts> Just be yourself… it’s not like you can be anything else…

<Satisfied he’d ended the conversation, Topsy turns and storms back to his sleeping area. Little does he know he just scored the only one-up on the longnecks he ever would. In the tree Guido marvelled at the simplicity of the thought. It made so much sense>

Guido: Bye Mr. and Mrs. Longneck! Thanks for the advice. <flies off to get as far away from them as possible>

Grandma: Anytime Guido.

<As the flier left both longnecks looked a bit ashamed at the argument they had caused. To avoid any further conversation they went back to eating – this time careful to avoid each other’s bushels>

LBT Fanfiction / Land Before Time: Rise of Storm Tide
« on: April 21, 2009, 12:04:02 AM »
I'm working on a new fan fiction for LBT, and this one is going to be more believable then the last one I did (you know the one where Ruby kills people  :confused).  Its format is going to be like a typical land before time movie - I mean an old land before time movie not the light and fluffy stuff that they are coming with now.  The basic plotline is this:

It picks up around the end of the end of the first tv series season, where the gang is made of seven and not just five.

After an introduction that properly brings in Redclaw and his gang to the movie timeline and depicts Ruby hatching from an egg, another gang of wandering dinosaurs makes its way into the Great Valley, and brings news of a pair of sharptooth stalking them on their way.  Chomper hears this and thinks they are his parents coming back (a short flashback of him leaving the island comes in). Chomper then says hes going to look for them and Ducky, Spike, Littlefoot, Petrie, Ruby and Cera - all bored from nothing exciting happening - decide to go with him.

All the while off the coast air masses are converging to create one of the most powerful storms in the prehistoric world - fortuneately its nowhere near the Great Valley ... yet.

It fills some plot holes, like why Chomper's parents left him with a family of fast runners, why Ruby's parents sent her away, and as well as the return of some of the characters from the old movies such as Ozzy, who has changed his attitude a bit now that he has a family!

As soon as exams finish I'll have nothing to do for the summer so ill post it as I finish - that is if you all have room in your heads for another fan fic!

LBT Fanfiction / Making your Fan-Fic easier to read
« on: March 23, 2009, 10:17:02 PM »
Lately I have been delving into some of the fan-fics people have written and i'm quite impressed with the time and the passion that has gone into some of the works.

In your mind these works are quite vivid and real, but in ours we only know what you write onto the page so heres a few grammar related tips and tricks to make them easier to read:

1) Space out your text. Its a lot tougher to read your story when its chapters are composed of a solid 20 line block. You lose your place and often read lines over and over causing them to lose meaning!

2) Whenever a new character speaks or a new event occurs (say littlefoot speaks then a nearby rock falls) make a line break and start a new sentance. Having speetch all shoved into the main block of text makes it tougher to figure out whos speaking.

3) Try to keep character speetch in character...no matter how out of character they may be!  Hearing things like ["Wow the sun is hot today, im thirsty" said Petrie] are quite out of character as they don't sound like something they would say. Take some time and grasp the subtleties of their language and try it like this: ["The great circle hot today! It making me verrry thirsty!" said Petrie]

4) Bold your character names so they can be easily seen, or just simply try doing a story script style! Makes it easier to see who is speaking or to pick up the names of the dinos involved.

And now for a bit of a fun point:

5) Write in Chomper and Ruby please!!! The newest official Land Before Time lore has them in the gang unless you are doing a past adventure. (In that case feel free to leave them out and ignore me)

Thank you and keep up the good writing!

Something that I've noticed that nobody else has commented on (at least not that I have seen) is that the creatures of the mysterious beyond call their home "The Mysterious Beyond". Does that not seem odd to you that this is the case? The term was coined in the land before time 2 by the great valley dinosaurs who rarely venture outside their own valley (the GoF excepted) so how would it spread to the denizens who actually live there? Anyway onto the real topic of my post  :smile

While there are many plot holes that can be brought up over the course of all the movies (ie what happened to Ozzy and Strut, Dina and Diana, Cera's Mom, Petries Dad, and Ducky's Dad) I'm going to address the biggest one in the TV series which is undoubtedly about Chomper and Ruby. What are they doing in the great valley? How come the leaf-eater parents find them so easy to accept? Why is Red Claw so specifically mentioned as the Sharptooth villian when there are hundreds of other sharpteeth out there? I've fashioned a pretty long explanation of my own which could be right and could be wrong but is also appropriate enough that it could be in an E rated land before time episode:

I'll start with the heirchy of the Mysterious Beyond because its important to understand how things are where Ruby and Chomper grew up.  The majority of the large herds in the region have retreated to the Great Valley bringing a huge void in the food supply for the sharpteeth in the area, which due to the lack of water and intense heat makes everyday a struggle for survival. Assuming they are as smart as the great valley dinosaurs the Sharpteeth will band together, with the strongest of them all being the leader and having the pick of the kill. There are likely to be very few T-rex sharpteeth in this mix because of the lack of food, but plenty of fast-biters and other small carnivores. The fact that the larger Sharpteeth rule the smaller is demonstrated by Redclaw and his two thuggs (how they found out his name I don't know...but ill get to that point later) which don't get eaten by their larger master but rather are lead on by his ravenous hunger.

So lets talk about Redclaw now, as far as we have seen he is the only large sharptooth around the edges of the great valley and has a huge gash on the left side of his face which could never have been caused by any leaf eating dinosaur. I propose that in some prior time Redclaw was in fact the leader of the sharpteeth in the mysterious beyond (likely around the time of LBT I or II) but was cast out when he was defeated by another, younger and stronger sharptooth of similar size which gave him his scar.  Bitter and resentful about his loss of supreme power and status (he used to have his pick of mates and the kill) he moved west and took up a new territory closer to the great valley which was populated by mostly smaller sharpteeth, who quickly owned up to this new and proficiant predator who gives them their fill of his large kills. Before long he would develop a following amoungst them, setting the stage for the next set of events.

Wow this is turning out to be quite the wall of text...ok next part is about Ruby and her family.

Ruby's parents are all on their own in the mysterious beyond, with no others of their kind to associate with which brings into question many things about them which i couldn't possibly come up with an explaination for right now, but here is my theory about them:

Ruby's kind, refered to as Fast Runners, occupy an odd part in the food chain with their ability to eat meat or plants as the times demand, and this makes them excellant survivors but it also makes them subject to redicule from both the leaf eaters and sharpteeth, who wouldn't see them as belonging in either group. Sharpteeth would despise them for their weakness when eating leaves, while leaf eaters would hate them for stealing eggs, eating fish (or seashells), or picking meat off corpses. Ultimately Ruby and her parents are outcasts, but given what things are like in the mysterious beyond they likely do have a place, but not a favourable one. It's interesting to note that Ruby and her parents know how to speak sharpteeth language (as you can't promise Chomper's parents something if they can't understand you).

...

<The Sun glowingly sets in the horizon as the dry winds crossing the mysterious beyond begin to subside. Exhausted after a long day of searching for food, Ruby's father returns to the family nest where his wife, Ruby's mother, had just settled in. Suddenly he turns his head quickly at the sound of stomping foodsteps from around the ridge and cowers at the sight of a massive sharptooth gathered with nearly half a dozen fast biters, slowly making their way through the arid winds with their noses in the air, sniffing out the two fast runners>

Ruby's Dad:<To his wife> Hide dear! Redclaw is back!

<she dashes around the corner, but limps as if burdened>

Dad:<in sharptooth> Redclaw? There is no food here and the land is dry, why is it that you have come?

Screech: Lookie its the cowering little morsel at last

Thudd: Barely worth our time

Redclaw: Silence before I skin you both <once more they cower in fear> Now, I am here to deal with one of the many problems in MY land.

Dad: Problem....with what?

Redclaw: You are the problem <roars, Screech and Thudd do the same> You refuse to leave like the rest of your worthless family, I was merciful before for not hunting you like I would any other leaf eater, but you continue to try my patience!

Dad: But Redclaw we are one of your own, we hunted with your packs for generations and even paid our respects to you why are you casting us out like this?

Redclaw: No weak leaf eater is kin of mine. I tolerated your parents, however useful their speed might have been, but times have changed and I will have no more of you! If you are not gone out of my territory by the next rising of the great circle I will send my underlings to...make use of you... as like any other insignificant creature.

Sreech, Thudd, and other Fast Biters: <screeching and licking their lips>

Dad: But Redclaw be reasonable, my wife is about to lay her eggs we cannot go for fear of losing our children...

Redclaw: Then all the bigger feast for my own <scowls and walks away>

<The fast biters surround Ruby's dad screeching their thirst for blood, but a quick growl from their master and they relent, leaving him all alone on the arid sands>

Ruby's Mother:<approaches> What are we to do...It's almost my time I can feel it.

Dad:<look of sorrowful concern> The only thing we can do dear, run.

...

I suspect that there would be some sort of relationship between the sharpteeth and Ruby's parents because they are next of kin, but not completely the same. Likely this relationship was one on speaking terms (as opposed to kill on sight as with predator-prey) for if it wasn't then they never would have spoke to Chomper's parents or even considered bringing him into their family for a brief while while him and Ruby prepared to leave for the great valley. I'll post more analysis on this and possibly some more fan fic if anyone is interested.

The Welcome Center / Greetings from Caustizer

Hello,

Unlike most newcomers to this forum I am very technical, sharp, and see things that some others don't as well as providing insights that from what i hear are interesting and informative. Not for me is the useless post, agreeing or disagreeing with others without explanation, and of course not continuing to watch land before time long after i outgrew it.

Land before time was such an important part of my childhood that it even partially influenced my current degree path in Earth and Space Science (those unforgettable images of stars and galaxies at the beginning of most LBT movies) and now that I've re-watched the old movies it is still just as great to me as it was back then.

See you on the forums,

Caustizer.
