The Fridge / Psychology: The Dancing Girl
« on: December 08, 2007, 11:52:56 PM »
This little test states that it shows left-brained or right-brained tendancy of a person by how the brain interprets the animation on the following site.
http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21...5005375,00.html

I found this quite fascinating.  To me, she spins clockwise most of the time (signifying that I'm generally right-brained, which I'll believe for sure) but with enough concentration I can focus on getting her to spin counter-clockwise.

General Land Before Time / LBT song downloads (LBT 5 and later)
« on: November 27, 2007, 12:33:49 AM »
Hi!

Just in case some people didn't notice (I know it's really small!), I put a link in my signature to a website where you can download all of the songs from LBT 5 to 12 (I don't have "One of a Kind" from LBT 12 recorded, but I can get it if anyone is interested).  I will also try to have the songs from LBT 13 on the site tomorrow, once I pick up the movie. :D

To find the songs, click "Official Songs" on the left side and go from there. B)

Sound Off! / Here's one: Offering $1million to audiophiles
« on: October 08, 2007, 05:55:28 PM »
Here's an interesting story:
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/calling-bullshi...tter-305549.php

Basically, an offer of $1 million to anyone who can tell the difference in a practical setting (no instrumentation allowed, just the ear) between Monster speaker wire (already overpriced) and this new $7250 speaker wire ($302 per foot).

The test obviously isn't on this website but the article is...interesting in its own way.
*sigh*.

Sound Off! / Headphones or speakers at the computer?
« on: September 26, 2007, 06:40:04 PM »
I said "75% headphones, 25% speakers" because of a few reasons...
the number one reason being privacy.  My grandfather in particular will tend to come and watch me or see what I'm doing fairly often, when I have music playing upstairs.  I'm not comfortable with always being watched or interrupted by my family, especially since I have been disturbed at rather unopportune times, such as in the middle of a deep MSN conversation or while working on a project and I'm trying to listen to the mix carefully to work on it.

I do all of my music work on headphones and really only use the speakers when I have the house to myself or listening to music or playing games for enjoyment.  I'm not a fan of doing music work and mixing on headphones but I prefer that to having to be answerable to everything I do up here, which really isn't much, but I just don't like being disturbed every 5 minutes for an hour straight because *some people* can't stop talking. :P:  :lol

Bottom line: it's a privacy issue.  I don't have my own room with a computer in it; the computer is in a common room upstairs.
This house isn't very big.  I need all the privacy I can get. :P:

Sound Off! / Audio File Formats

MIDIs have the majority and MP3 the minority
This isn't something I see/hear very often anymore. ;)  :wow
You've sparked my curiousity: Why is your MIDI collection so much larger than your pre-rendered audio collection?
What are the purpose of .mid files in digital world as we know it now, in your own words?  I stopped using them because I generally consider them obsolete.  While MIDI technology is Certainly not obsolete by any means, .mid files seem to be getting further and further removed from the mainstream world and are seen mainly on the production side of music.

Gamers Zone / Remakes of games (Console -> PC, etc.)
« on: August 12, 2007, 11:14:40 PM »
I have noticed a (sort of) trend on the Internet lately of taking older games, console games or arcade games and porting them to PC.  I'm not talking about emulators (software designed to pretend to be another piece of software or hardware, such as an existing game system or computer), I'm talking about complete overhauls.  Here are some links to a few examples:

Stepmania: A By-fans, for-fans complete custom and open-source version of the Dance Dance Revolution arcade/console game series.

Project Goldeneye: A single player/multiplayer mod for Unreal Tournemant 2004 and Half-life 2, designed to replicate the classic (and hugely successful!) N64 game, Goldeneye (with improved graphics, engine, more players, internet play, but the same levels, characters, guns, etc. both versions are incomplete as far as I understand.  The Half-Life 2 version is closer to completion but their official site is down right now).

Scorched Earth (the original 1991 release) is currently being completely rewritten for Windows and Linux, under the name Atomic Tanks.  Same game concept and format, completely updated graphics and engine.

I personally love the idea of taking an excellent but dated or limited game and modernizing it to its full potential.  I can think of a large handful of games I'd like to see this done to, unfortunately it's a huge amount of effort and not many complete games exist right now.
Here is a list of a few games I'd like to see remade, either on a new console or by fans as a PC version:

N64: Blast Corps I Love the concept of this game!  I have hoped for a sequel for years but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. :cry2 I can see so much potential for a sequel: Larger maps, co-op levels, new vehicles, trickier puzzles, etc. etc.  It would be great! :P:
N64: Pilotwings 64 (Imagine what this game could look like on a modern computer!)
Another Twisted Metal game, with online play preferred, or at least LAN play.
An F-Zero game with Internet play.
A Mario Party game with LAN support.
Diddy Kong Racing
Battletanx!  Now this would be a fun LAN/Internet game! :D

Basically half of the N64 games ever produced :P:  I loved the N64 system, I just felt the games weren't able to reach their full potential because of system limitations, lack of internet play and lack of downloadable/custom content.

What do you think about the idea of remaking existing games?  Is it necessary?  Is it a good idea?  What games would you like to see come back as shiny and new?

(LOL You can really see my gaming style on this topic: My games are almost exclusively multiplayer favorites as opposed to in-depth single player epics :P: ).

Sound Off! / The difficulties of starting/being in a band
« on: July 18, 2007, 10:43:20 PM »
I have thought more than once about starting a band, just casually.  A couple of my friends (tobeysan and amethyst from the GoF, actually!) attempted it back in September to November of 2006, but we had countless problems getting off the ground.  The most obvious problems were:
1) None of us can really play an instrument
2) None of us can really sing

While that *should* complicate things considerably, we weren't really concerned about those.  Thanks to my computer, we could get away with not having to play a single note ourselves, and we never got far enough to worry about the singing.  I'll talk about these things in more detail later but I want to continue my train of thought.

The biggest things stopping us from getting anywhere as a band were:
1) Lack of time to actually work on it (this is apparently still a problem)
2) Deciding on music style
3) Deciding on lyrics and themes/ideas for songs
4) Perhaps different amounts of focus and dedication

We didn't even have a name for our band yet, and we have very little complete work from our band.

I personally have little faith in our band trying again, for a number of reasons.  While it was very disappointing for me, I understand that not everyone thinks the same way.  I'd really like to try it again but it's just not looking promising. :(

I think our biggest downfall was lack of time and lack of coordination.  I understand that not everyone has as much free time as I do.  Even with my full-time job now I find myself sitting here quite often :p

I'm just diappointed.
I have another friend who kind of wanted to start a band too but we barely even see each other due to lack of time on his part.  I don't know how he'd ever fit a band project in there...I'm starting to wonder if I need to start meeting people who leave some time in their schedule for...seeing their friends :p

LBT Projects / LBT 11's Opening Piano theme
« on: July 06, 2007, 09:09:36 PM »
I've heard a number of people now mention how much they liked the piano (or the music in general) of LBT 11's opening scene.  I was just wondering, who would be interested in the piano sheet music for this scene?  If there is any interest, I can write it up pretty fast (I'll probably distribute it in PDF format for easy reading and printing).

If there is interest in an mp3 of the music, without sound effects, I can write this up as well but it will take more time.

Sound Off! / Categorizing music by Genre/Subgenre
« on: June 19, 2007, 12:30:01 AM »
NewOrder started an interesting concept in the "A Look at Metal Music" topic: Can, or Should, a song be classified into a specific genre or subgenre of music?  I suspect strong opinions on both sides of this discussion.  Please try to keep flaming and harsh words out of this discussion.  Thanks. B)

I would like to say Yes, but categorizing music is not as simple as it appears.  The simple, broad genres such as Rock, Techno, Country, Classical (technically "Orchestral" is a better word, since "Classical" refers to an era in musical history, not the orchestral style of music), etc.

"Rock", "Classical" and "Techno" (I prefer the term "electronica" since techno can be considered a subgenre) are probably the most overused and least understood terms when describing music.  These three genres are actually "Major Genres", if you will, with the songs fitting into "subgenres" of each of these.  There are, of course, other "Major Genres", such as Country (iffy, since it can relate closely to rock), Ethnic (from a foreign culture), Bigband, Choral, A-capalla (related to choral), etc.  There are probably others which I can't recall at the moment.
These definitions of main genres are purely off the top of my head.  They are certainly up for debate!  Feel free to add as you wish. :yes
A major genre is basically defines the instruments and general style with which the music is played.  I tend to think of the following:

Rock:
Consists of a small band (up to about 6 members).  Features at least 2 guitars (lead and bass) and a drum kit.  Other additions are at the discretion of the band, which help to decide the subgenre.

Orchestral: Features either a small (small variety and quantity of orchestral instruments) or full-sized orchestra.  The amount of focus placed on the orchestra (whether the receive all of the attention or if they are alongside a rock band or other insturments) helps to determine the subgenre.

Electronica: The music was generated by synthetic means, by use of
computers,
software or hardware synthesizers,
or audio samples -->(this is what I do :)).
The quantity of live performance and the style of the music helps determine the subgenre.  Hip-hop and rap generally falls in as a subgenre of electronica, as a huge percentange of hip-hop music is synthetically-generated.

Country: The modern version of this genre can be considered very similar to rock, with the general differences being the focus on pianos, fiddles, or other "honky-tonk"-style instruments, the lyrics of the song and the singing style.  Classic country can be considered significantly different from rock and "modern" country.

Bigband: Refers to a typical jazz band: trumpets, trombones, saxophones, possibly flutes and clarinets.  Similar in a way to orchestral, but a more clearly defined genre.

Choral: The primary focus of choral music is a group of human voices.  They are often used in conjunction with an orchestra as well.  A choir is generally a large group (perhaps 8 or more singers, divided up into approximately 4 (typical) parts) Pure Choral music is not common in popular culture.

A-capella: Similar to choral music in that it relies on a group of human voices to produce all of the music.  Generally, A-capella is a smaller group than a choir (maybe 4 or 5 singers.  4 is typical).

Spoken Word: Usually performed by a small group (1 or 2) with electronic or acoustic background accompaniment. Rap and spoken-word versions of songs fall into this category.

Now comes the fun: Nearly all songs do Not fit nicely into a single genre.  A song that drifts into two or more genres, I tend to refer to as a "fusion".  For example, one could say this song is a "Rock/orchestral fusion" if Rock is the primary (most prominent) element of music in the song, or an "Orchestral/Rock fusion" if orchestral is the primary element.  Of course, a song could easily spread 3 or more genres.  Electronica is an incredibly common genre to appear in music today, because it is so easy for anyone to add a drum beat or a few background effects to their song.  Name off 10 pieces of music and probably at least 5 of them have electronica elements to them unless they're pure orchestral.  Most "dance" songs today (with some exceptions of course, such as jazz) will consist of some element of electronica (usually the drum parts are computer-generated).

Subgenres
This is where categorizing music gets really interesting and complicated.  While a song may be Rock, is it more like Song A or more like Song B?  This is one basis behind defining the subgenre of a song.  Of course, sub-subgenres exist but I'm not going there just yet.:p   Rock, for example, can be broken down into these (and many more) subgenres:

Ballad Rock / Soft Rock
Classic Rock
Hard Rock
Metal (which is argueably a different Major Genre but I like to put it within rock because of the strong musical similarities)
Punk Rock
Emo (If you really want to go there :p)
Math Rock (don't ask...it does exist)

All of these subgenres can be further broken down into sub-subgenres to help group similar songs together and to help describe the sound of a particular song.

Tails and I had a discussion on MSN about whether the "Pop" genre exists.  While a conclusion wasn't reached, I hoped to address it here.  I am thinking of songs by bands like ATC (A Touch of Class), Aqua and the like.  I personally am starting to agree with Tails that "Pop" does Not really exist.  Instead, it's a pseudo-genre, based on the song.  In the case of "Around the World" by ATC, the song could be categorized as:

Electronica -> Techno -> Upbeat -> Dance -> Vocal -> 21st century -> Year 2000
...and so forth.  I would eventually define this song as being "21st-century vocal techno/dance", to be reasonably accurate.  A more precise definition could be made is desired.
One can break down songs into smaller and smaller groups until there is only a single song in the group.  It is similar to how species are scientifically categorized.

A more complex genre breakdown would be for a song like "If We Hold On Together" (the Diana Ross version).  Let's try:

Rock -> Soft rock -> Other lyrical topic (not love song) -> Inspirational -> Feat. Piano -> 1980s -> 1988 -> ...
Orchestral -> Background orchestral elements -> ...
Electronica -> Downbeat -> Ballad -> Background -> Backgound synthesized sounds -> ...

That being said, "If We Hold On Together" could be classified as
1988 Inspirational Soft rock with orchestral and synth background.  One could go further if they wanted to.

Hey guys, I have an important question.
Did somebody here spread my website around to the point that it appears on the LBT TV Series article on wikipedia?  (See the bottom of the page)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Land_Befo...ime_(TV_series)

The last "External link" is Directly to my website, which hosts all of my TV episodes.  I did NOT post up this link, nor do I know where it came from.  I don't have the bandwidth to share the episodes on such a large scale.  I will remove this link if I need to (it looks like I may..I've been getting absolutely swamped recently. How long has this link been there?)

The Party Room / Let's play Jeopardy! (LBT-style)
« on: June 10, 2007, 08:31:35 PM »
LBTlover and I have been working on setting up an LBT quiz game in the style of the North American game show, "Jeopardy".  Here are the rules that we will be using on the forum:

Seen below is the "game board".  You will see eight "categories" of questions along the top of the board, and the numbers 100 to 500 below each category name.  Each numbered space represents a question.  The higher the number, the more difficult the question.  The question will somehow relate to the category that the numbered square is under.

The game starts with two players: The "Host" and "Lead Player" (the player in charge of picking a square on the board which cooresponds to a question).  I will start the game as the "Host".  The "Host" has a simple job: to make up and ask a question based on the player's choice.

After the question has been posted, ANYONE may *ring in* to answer the question.  If the respondant is correct, they are awarded the number of points shown on that square.  If the respondant is INcorrect, they may not answer that question again and must wait for another question.  If the player answers Correctly, this player is awarded the points on the question square an now becomes the "Lead player".  This player may now choose any new question square to get a question from.  In "real" jeopardy, the "host" never changes but we are going to allow Anyone to ask a question for the sake of our game.  This way, the host doesn't get bored just asking questions and has a chance to score points as well.

NOTE: The host does not get killed when it comes to points.  The host automatically gets 50 points for each answered question and 100 points for each unanswered question.  This helps keep the "host" in the game.

To pick a question square, just use dialog like "The First Film for 200", for example.  The "host" then makes up a question about the first film, of moderately easy difficulty (200 out of 500 isn't all that high).  Remember, we have a lot of LBT experts here so don't make questions *too* easy!  Generally, a 100-point question should be fairly simple and a 500-point question should have quite a bit of complexity or depth to it.

Time Limit: When a question is posted up, players have 24 hours to answer it.  When a guess is made, the timer is reset.  If a correct answer is not posted within 24 hours, the question is removed from the game, the question square on the board is cleared, and play resumes with the same "Lead player" picking a square.

Also, if a question is answered INCORRECTLY 3 times, the question is removed from the game.

When a question is answered correctly, I will remove it from the game board (it will become a blank space) and cannot be chosen again.  When every numbered square on the board is empty, the game is over.  The winner is the player with the most points at this point in time.  We may do a full game (2 rounds like this, and "final jeopardy") if we ever feel like it but for this first game, we'll end it when the board is empty.

We may need to change a rule or two as we go along, but we'll see what happens.

To sum up the rules:
The Lead player chooses a question square.
Anyone can write a question (if you write, you can't answer).
24 hours from the time of the previous guess to answer.
A correct player gets the points marked on the square and becomes the Lead player (can choose the next question square).  Anyone else can read the next question.  YOU MAY ONLY GUESS ONCE ON EACH QUESTION!
After 3 Incorrect answers, the question is thrown out.
The winner is the player with the highest score when all the questions squares are gone.

(*pssst* The winner may get a special treat. We'll see :p  perhaps in the form of a signature award... ;) )

Let's Play jeopardy! :D
Anyone, pick a square and start us off!
When a question square is picked, anyone else can ask a question related to that category and difficulty.

Gamers Zone / Dance Dance Revolution on PC

Hey all!
I wanted to bring this rather amusing game to everyone's attention.  If you have ever seen the game Dance Dance Revolution before, this game should look Very familiar! :p   The title of the game is Stepmania.  It has been an ongoing project for many years (I downloaded it back when it was 3.0.  3.9 final is out now and 4.0 is available in beta form).

Their site has a link to the game program, which is only 15 MB or so.  Songs can then be downloaded for the game by checking around the forums or asking me (ask nicely and I'll share :p).  The official DDR songs and steps (exactly the same as the arcade and console game series) were available last time I checked and thousands of custom songs and steps are freely available around the community through sites like http://www.bemanistyle.com

The controls for the game are whatever you want them to be: The arrow keys are the most obvious choice.  If you really want to get into it, you can buy actual floor-standing dance pad controllers such as These moderately cheap ones or these high-end ones which will basically survive an earthquake.  Even with the keyboard though, the game is free and can provide large amounts of amusement.  Iv'e become quite addicted to Stepmania for years. :P:
