I can only make a hunch as to why Season 3 is a bit shorter and came a bit later than usual.

Ashleigh Ball, Tabitha St. Germain, Nicole Oliver, Peter New, M. A. Larson, Daniel Ingram and Steffan Andrews were working on the newest reboot of Littlest pet Shop, and they play some very important roles in MLP.

Like I said, only a hunch.

C'mon you guys, ponies are old. We all know the newest trend will be Littlest Pet Shop, whose premiere will air right after ponies.

Wait, if I love ponies and I think I will love Littlest pet Shop...

So far, the HUB has placed an order for 13 episodes. Whether ot not that means Season 3 will only have 13 episodes or not, we will find out soon enough.

But if we do end up with 13 episodes, they better add 13 more or make each episode 1 hour long, because Seasons 1 and 2 both have 26 each (Unless you count Season 2's 2 parter opening with Discord, as it was meant for Season 1 and a lot of things point towards it originally being Season 1 as well, so technically Season 1 should have 28 episodes and Season 2 24 episodes)
