General Land Before Time / Ikky's pair of Binoculars
« on: January 31, 2008, 12:49:35 AM »
It'd be a cool thing to add in a fan fic. It's not often that one gets the opportunity to place some canon Cenozoic Era-technology in the hands of a LBT character.  B)

On the VHS cover of the Land Before Time 4: Journey Through the Mists, Ikky and Dil can be seen in the background, and Ikky was holding a little pair of binoculars! Was this a deliberate toungue-in-cheek joke, or did the producers really miss something like that?

I'd paste a picture, but I don't know how to do that. Here's a link: Amazon.com-Land Before Time 4 Click on "See larger Image." It's still kinda small, but the binocs are visible.

That'd probably be part of the reason why Red Claw, Screech, and Thud took advantage of this new entrance as soon as it was available, becaus the other passages were constantly on guard. This one didn't need to be since it had the fruit as a smokescreen.

This was the first episode I'd ever seen, since it was available as an extra on the LBT13 DVD. Glad my TV series experience gets to start on such a high note!

I think I understand now. So does that mean that there aren't any Moderators or Ultimate Land Before Time fans right now?

General Land Before Time / LBT 14
« on: January 30, 2008, 11:07:06 PM »
Oh, yeah. Still, I think it would be rather easy for them to find a new voice actor, if need be. They've been able to do it or other characters.

All the talk of ending LBT for good started scaring me, since there seemed to be so many good reasons given for why it may happen. But, after reviewing the last four pages of dscussion, I've dcided that there really is no reason to be as nervous of a potential shut down as some people are.

Here are the 3 main reasons I've seen to justify a potential end to the series.

1) The mention of the phrase "Land Before Time" at the end of LBT13 sounded like it was placed there as a series closer.

True (kinda), but other than that nothing has been shown anywhere else to suggest that. No websites, Land Before Time, Universal Studios, or otherwise related, have said anything suggesting the series is on it's last leg. Never once has anything called LBT 13 "The last adventure" or "a thrilling conclusion." It's always been referred to as "the latest sequel," or "another wonderful adventure."

2)The newest group running Land Before Time wants to drop it and other 2007cruft and start brand-new series, due to potential money accruement, and possibly the "Founder Effect."

While it is true that people want to be the starter of something new, it's also true that starting off with a giant fan base is important as well, and much more potentially profitable. Actively attempting to destroy a fan base is bad marketing, as well as bad publicity if word get out (we've already seen one user here decide to boycott Universal Studios just from hearing that they plan to do this).

Also, this isn't the first time LBT has changed hands. Bluth, Lucas, and Spielburg controlled LBT at it's genesis, Roy Allen Smith took it over for the next 3 movies, and Grosvenor has had it for the next 8 movies. This is just another passing of the baton, one which hopefully will yield a new take on the LBT universe.

3)A new release of Land Before Time toys and other accessories is an attempt to squeeze as much money as possible from a dying series.

This logic would be much more appropriate for the release of a brand new stand-alone movie, which was popular when it was relaeased, but the producers, knowing it would fall into obscurity soon, cranked out loads of toys, t-shirts, and other spinoff stuff. It is unlikely that they would do this for a long-running and stable series.

Also, even if somehow the franchise is cancelled, that doesn't mean it will never be revived. Due to the reasons I stated two posts ago, this series would be one of the easiest to restore that I've ever seen. Not that I think it'll get to that point any time soon.

(Also, on a completely unrelated topic, this is the post that'll make me a junior!   :birthday )

I think I saw something on Wikipedia affirming that, but you can't be quite sure.
The only thing on Wikipedia now is a redlink (which is a link to a non-existant page) linking to Land Before Time 14, with a "To Be Announced" tacked on the end. Unless what you saw was deleted, that's not really enough to enure a sequel.

However, I think there will be a sequel, and many more. One of the things I find fascinating about Land Before Time is the fact that it has absolutely nothing that could end the series on it's own:

--Since it is animated, there are no actors to leave the studio, and therefore no chance at losing the main characters.

--Since no character has maintained the same voice actor throughout, this means that a character will never have to be retired because their voice actor does.

--There are obviously no legal rights involved, since the original creators allowed others to produce sequels.

--There is a massive fan base, ranging from very young children to college students to adults. It is unlikely that all these age groups will give the series up anytime soon.

These factors give the LBT franchie a potential unlimited expiration date, and I see nothing that might bring it down to it's knees any time soon.

"Racialism" is the belief that different races are more or less skilled at different things (For example, people or Race A are better workers than people of Race B), while Racism is the belief that such a difference makes one race better than the other. A racialist merely acknowledges the difference, a racist uses the difference to make one race appear better.

General Land Before Time / Best/Worst Singing Voices.

Serris, when you said LBT9 I got my numbers mixed up and thought you meant The Great Longneck Migration, and at that point I totally agreed with you.

Then Malte pointed out your mistake, and now I have to abstain, since I haven't seen that movie yet. The Youtube version of Noone Has To Be Alone is pretty good.

I can't say I've ever heard any voice actors whose singing I considered "Bad." Some songs I didn't like, but it wasn't because of the singing, it was just the topic or the execution of the song (Like "The Mad Song" or every song from LBT13).

My favorite part of any song is  in "Bad Luck" (LBT7) when Cera sings "When a Sharptooth finds you All alone" and audibly quavers the 'all.' I can't imagine how the voice actress was able to imply shock like that.

Im confused. So is this game based on the movie that Malte described, or is it completely unrelated? I'd never seen nor heard of either befpre reading these post, so all my information comes from this thread.

Sorry about misinterpreting the info, Malte.

I've never seen a moderator before. Can someone name a moderator so I can see what the symbol looks like?

Actually, to be honest I don't think I've seen an Ultimate LBT Fan either.

When Screech and Thud (were they identified by name in this one?) broke out of the wall, the gang all yelled at once, and started running away, but they were all frozen in place for a few moments before they started moving (similar to what normally happens in Scooby-doo when they get chased).

I wonder, if like  Bron, Littlefoot may choose a different name at some point.
Probably not during the time period the movies and tv series are set in. IF for no reason other than that fans wouldn't like it if the main character changes his name to "Bronty" or something.  :lol

From what I've heard so far, the story is about a baby apatosaurus who gets his home destroyed. He then assumedly heads out to find a new one.

There doesn't seem to be any characters except him and his short-lived father. Why are there 4 other characters on the front cover?

General Land Before Time / Ducky is always called guillible
« on: January 30, 2008, 12:02:48 AM »
Ducky has always been called gullible. It's been one of the usual words to describe her since I can remember, and I've always agreed with it. Yet, just now I've been thinking about that, and I cant think of many times when she's been portryed as guillible.

Several times, the whole gang has been tricked or assumed something incorrectly (Cera, not Littlefoot would lead thm to the Great valley, Chomper's egg was Ducky's sister, Doc was the Lone Dinosaur) but I can't find an example of when Ducky alone was tricked into beleving something.

Actually, when Littlefoot mentions seeing a Stone of Cold Fire, and asks his friend if they believe him, Ducky is the first to remind him that stones can be cold or on fire, but not both.

There are examples of apparent guillibility added for humor's sake (For example, "It doesn't look like a tree." "It doesn't smell like a tree." "It doesn't feel like a tree." [[T-rex starts starts standing up and roars]] Ducky:"and it does not sound like a tree, no no no") but the other characters say things like this occasionally, and guillibility usually implies that one is trustworthy, not merely unobservant.

Petrie, on the other hand, openly admits his guillibility ("but me believe anything," LBT7.) He also proves it when he believes everything Pterano says (Ducky, and the other three, didn't seem to believe him at all.)

So, what's everyone's opinion on this? And can anyone find any counter-examples?

It would certainly explain why that one longneck who returned with Cera, Ducky, Petrie and Spike hasn't been seen since. It'd also explain why the three sharpteeth were so wimpy.

Yet it would kinda ruin everything, I agree.

1988 Theatrical Release / Littlefoot Getting rid of Sharptooth
« on: January 29, 2008, 11:29:37 PM »
Don't forget that all 5 of them were hungry, and had been hiking for days. Since we are all sitting, well-fed and watered (and hopefully not in any immediate danger) in front of our computers, we have the luxury of unlimited foresight and a clear head. When one is in a dangerous situation, one tends to lose the ability to think absolutely clearly. I believe the desicion was much more on-the-spot than we imagine.

When I try to put myself in Littlefoot's case, I think of when I was 15, and got lost in a forest outside my old house. I had dozed off in a large tree, and woke up to find it about twilight. Remembering that dad said never to panic, I calmly slid out of the tree and thought about where to go. I thought: "Due to the Coriolis Effect, my body is tuned to walk counter-clockwise, since I live in the Northern Hemisphere. The sun is setting to my left, and in the morning I can see it from my bedroom window, which faces east. Therefore, east (and home) is to my right, and I should follow any paths that lead clockwise from my current position, since I want to retrace my path."

While it sounds like I had thought this through really well, in reality, I was cold, hungry and wanted to get home. I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing, and the logic was proably reall flawed, but I thought, "Screw it, I gotta do something." Also, I didn't have the luxury of double-checking my logic, and making sure I knew I was right: daylight was almost gone, and I needed to use it while I had it.

Also, to follow my unblazed clockwise direction, I strayed off the path and did some risky things I certainly wouldn't have tried during the day, in a safer stuation. However, once I had made my original desicion, I didn't think enough to even consider changing course. Evey move I made was calculated to shave as much time off of my journey as possible, regardless of the consquences if I misstep.

I wound up exiting the forest and finding myself downtown, which was petty far away from my house.

Anyway, the point is, Littlefoot and co. couldn't afford to think clearly, and weigh the possible solutions anymore than I could've 5 years ago. They needed to make a desicion and stick with it. Littlefoot conjured in his head a possibillity of a way to eliminate Sharptooth, and once it was fully formed, he implemented it. If the others had had any better ideas, they would've said them, but they obviously didn't. And then they fell into place behind him.

Also, if anyone says that Littlefoot didn't look tired or exhausted, trust me he probably was. One of the marks of a good leader is the ability to hide one's own exhaustion, and put on a brave face for the others in your party. since Littlefoot had shown in the past that he was going and willing to be their leader, he knew he'd have to act the part completely, to keep the others going.
