Computer and Electronics / Enough with these Talking Ads Already!
« on: March 31, 2010, 05:17:56 PM »
Those talking ads really get the attention, don't they?   I don't mind ads as long as they're not too intrusive. Pop-ups are one thing; ads that "talk" -- and loudly at that -- are a whole new level of "Enough with the plugs already!"

Hey Mr Merchant: Want to drive potential customers away, permanently? Keep on playing those grating online ads.

Sports / 2010 Winter Olympics
« on: February 12, 2010, 08:16:02 PM »
I'm a casual winter Olympic fan but I do love to watch figure skating and skiiing. A skating couple representing France trained here Indianapolis (my hometown) so I'm anxious to see them perform.  One event I never miss is the luge, but with what happened today I think I'll take a pass. That's a very dangerous sport as we've seen today. RIP Nodar. :cry  News Story

The Party Room / How rare is your Personality Type?
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:15:57 PM »
I took a similar personality test in college and was not surprised with the results. I've always felt "different" from family and peers. Wow, INFP and extremely right-brained. This is why I excelled in social studies, language arts, and music but tanked in math.

Your Personality is Very Rare (INFP)

Your personality type is dreamy, romantic, elegant, and expressive.

Only about 5% of all people have your personality, including 6% of all women and 4% of all men
You are Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Perceiving.

How Rare Is Your Personality?

The Party Room / What US state do you belong in?
« on: January 25, 2010, 06:40:42 PM »
Born and bred Hoosier who sometimes feels like a displaced New Englander. Now I have proof!

You Are Massachusetts

You are smart, serious, and quite traditional. You don't have a lot of time for junk in your life.
It's likely that you're well educated and hard working. You live a very goal oriented life.

You are probably socially liberal, but personally quite conservative. You would never be described as wild.
But you're more diverse than people give you credit for. You're equally comfortable at a business meeting and at a rowdy sports game!

What US State Are You?

1988 Theatrical Release / I ask Don About LBT Lost Scenes
« on: January 14, 2010, 11:07:24 PM »
Spielberg was executive producer which means he helped bankroll the movie, so he must have those deleted scenes locked away very carefully. But I thought Universal owned the copyright (and all that goes with it) for Land Before Time.

LBT's 25th anniversary is in 3 years and it would be wonderful if ol' Steve could give up some -- or all! -- of those edited scenes, maybe some rough animation or storyboards.  Even Disney knows not to throw away what doesn't make it on screen. It's history FCOL.  Wonder of Spielberg has Twitter so we can bombard him with endless tweets. :yes

Silver Screen / Dinosaur
« on: January 12, 2010, 06:00:22 PM »
The problem with making a visually stunning film is forgetting there is a story to tell. When I saw those first trailers, Dinosaur was on my "must see" list. While I still love the movie for its animation and gorgeous visual impact, the story was too predictable. Did I come away entertained? Yes, and I even managed to squeeze out some Dinosaur inspired fan fiction, mostly featuring the grande dames Eema and Baylene. The casting of Joan Plowright made me go, "What?" while I was just too thrilled to hear Ossie Davis (RIP) and Della Reese exchange barbs. Their scenes alone should've been longer. :)

I don't think it was an absolute flop, but then again Disney does seem to sweep aside what they deem as "disappointing" movies. meaning that it didn't appeal to the pre-school set.

"O Sweet Mystery of Life, at last I've found you!"

Complete with exaggerated high C tenor voice and typical operatic histrionics. Of course his audience looks on with adoration...  :lol

The Fridge / Burj Dubai completed
« on: January 06, 2010, 06:54:39 PM »
I saw an artist's rendering of Dubai Tower while the real thing was under construction. 160 stories! And I thought I'd get a a nosebleed going up in the Sears Tower.  :lol  BTW I've yet to venture out on the glass balcony but one of these days I'll shell out the $15 just to see what it's like to look out with no "floor" under my feet.  Just don't  look down!

I think it's lovely. Let's hope no crazy in a plane decides to crash through it.

The Fridge / A holiday pic of my niece

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thought I'd share this with my GoF pals. This is Ella, my 3 year old niece, and a dinosaur fan. I'm gradually introducing her to the joys of LBT. For Christmas, I sent the original LBT and a couple sequels. Hopefully, in a few years, she'll be part of our circle.  :yes

Anyway, here is Ella dressed in, of all things, the tree skirt! The tree came down New Years Day and she insisted she "Put on" the skirt. This is just too funny!  :lol

Isn't she a cutie pie?  :)

General Land Before Time / Happy Birthday Mr Thicknose
« on: November 30, 2009, 04:37:42 PM »
Happy 82nd Birthday to Robert Guillaume, the original voice of our favorite pachyrhinosaurus, Mr Thicknose.

Would you believe the first time I watched LBT 8 I kept wondering "Who's the voice?" My dad caught on. "That's Benson!" For those unaware, Guillaume played Benson on the old 70's TV sitcom Soap then starred in the spin-off.

Think I'll watch LBT 8 tonight.  :celebrate

I know this is late but I was busy today cooking my part of the dinner.   I'm thankful for family and friends, especially my 3-year old niece who adores dinosaurs. LBT is on the Christmas list this year, and the GoF might get a new member in a few years. :DD

Hope everyone had a blessed and peaceful day.

Silver Screen / 2012

Roland Emmerich has to be the 21st Century Irwin Allen, the master of the disaster flick. There is something about seeing our great cities trashed by aliens, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes (Enter any other natural or manmade catastrophe here) either gives a perverse rush or tremendous sadness.

BTW I've seen that clip too many times and love the drama with a dash of humor thrown in. The too realistic special effects alone -- California really slides into the drink -- will be worth the cost of admission and popcorn.  :)

Silver Screen / What are your guilty pleasures?
« on: October 04, 2009, 02:22:55 PM »
Surely you mean those awful B movies that never (never will!) win any prizes or even get "OK" reviews. Somehow, I have to watch those old 50's B horror or sci-fi flicks like Attack of the 50 Foot Woman or Wasp Woman.  The latter is about an old woman who discovers a fountain of youth only she has to kill someone young and drink their blood to stay young.  Watching her grow old again because the stuff didn't work anymore is worth the wait. Pretty cheesy and heavy on the melodramatics but it's a good way to pass a cold and boring Friday night.
