The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

1988 Theatrical Release / Re: Outcut land before time scenes
« on: October 16, 2024, 04:59:47 AM »
It seems like over the years we keep thinking we’ve found a VHS copy with the missing footage, and every time it just leads us to  a standard copy.

But what about that rumor that the uncut version was broadcast in Finland in the mid-90’s? Do we know for sure that it was just a rumor?

I am no expert on this since I was a small kid back then, but I have a faint memory of seeing the first Land Before Time on VHS when visiting a friend in the early 2000's, and I was wondering why they had changed some of the scenes. The VHS my friend had was the regular version, so either:
a) I had seen the uncut version as a kid before (not when it broadcastet, but on tape. We used to record a lot of shows and movies on VHS tapes)
b) I didn't remember how the movie went / mixed it up with some other movie.

Maybe the latter is more likely, considering that I don't remember much about my childhood in the 90's. But, I know for sure that this is a topic that Finnish fans also talk about. Mostly I've seen it on toy collector forums/FB pages, so it's not necessarily that insightful, but I remember taking a part in a few conversations. Usually they end with a statement like "I hope that someone had recorded it on tape and still have it saved somewhere." So, I would say that it is a myth until someone can provide footage of it :\
If you look up early press reviews from 1988 you can find mentions of 80 minute runtime, which would be "proof" of existence.

This review is dated the same day as the theatrical release, so it could be the reviewer has seen a pre-theatrical preview screening with the scenes still intact.

ducky making faces to get it's attention was in the version I watched as well. There may have been some other smaller details but those are the two I definitely remember being different.
Oh wow I didn't even realize this was missing, but apparently it is. Do you have any memory of this scene happening after petrie climbs back up? For me that's the "proof" I have, since I was remembering this scene before I stumbled on this cel. And nobody had posted it here either.

1988 Theatrical Release / Re: A remake could actually happen.
« on: April 12, 2019, 03:08:43 PM »
I don't really feel that there should be a remake to be done. Like few people here have said it, when it comes to remakes I'm not a fan of them either. I think they are just ways to make more money, when you just can't come up with new ideas. If the day comes that I become a father, I will definitely show my kids the movies that I enjoyed as a kid myself, the original being one of them. And when it comes to keeping the storyline exactly the same, I agree with that. There's really no need to change how the plot goes.
Well the newest trailer of the lion king remake seems well made. I wouldn't mind a new Land Before Time with the same treatment, along with a directors cut with all the deleted scenes included.

Ah no worries! The image links were broken in that first post until I fixed them yesterday afternoon, so it makes sense you didn't see it the first time around :D

However, the image you posted seems to be a higher quality one and I am not sure where it originates from.
I found it listed with other usual official pictures from some French "imdb" website, cinema something. Maybe a part of some official presskit?

1988 Theatrical Release / SCRIPT for Original Uncut LBT FOUND!

Thanks for bringing that connection up even if we've seen that scene before. :) In any case, it's good to see you again. You and your efforts to search for the uncut film were one of the things that raised my interest to this site in the first place. ^^spike
Yeah still thinking about it, almost ten years since I wandered here :D It's good to see GoF going strong and this is a really nice discovery.  Malte still around here?

The outcut scenes thread original post has died out with all the pics gone. I think it would deserve to be revived a bit with all the later discovered cels and footage gathered in one post, we even have the script now for accurate description of the scenes.
I read through that thread a while back and managed to get a number of images from it (before the Photobucket crap happened) and uploaded some of them to the LBT wiki. There's a user on there that I also found out was secretly uploading never-befores-seen cels on there since 2014. There's one of Littlefoot's mother in pain and it fits in the script actually.

As for putting all the scenes and cels into one post would be a massive undetaking at this point, something that would be considered a major project myself. Summer is coming up soon so I might do it. I'll have a lot more free time and the motivation to spend the countless hours working on putting together a massive, user-friendly review/guide which talks about the script, cels, storyboards and deleted scenes in detail.
Did you get the berry-scene? It's also in the script. I had only these still stored, might as well put them up here:

There was one more pic of this waterfall scene in malte's post.

Anyone could point out a german cel-site, that I found out while digging the old network54 forum if I remember correctly, because it had a load of cels when watched through web archive. For example the scene after drowning sharptooth was there in better quality than posted here. I don't think I went fully through it and forgot about it.

1988 Theatrical Release / I think this "uncut version" obsession

Bluth has stated on no uncertain terms that Spielberg has the only copy of the missing footage and that he's not releasing it. It doesn't get more final than that. Why so hopeless, because I'm tired of this baseless rumor.

2. Many fans from various countries have told about seeing such an uncut version. Similar cases of scenes included in movie adaptions of some countries but not in all of them are not unheard of. I consider the probability higher that such different cuts of the movie have actually been aired rather than assuming or accusing of collective memory failure or deliberate misinformation.
People claimed that you can unlock Luigi in Super Mario 64 for years, worldwide. Guess what? You can't. I rest my case.
Definitely not baseless memories for me after finding the deleted scene cel from the final sharptooth battle scene, which I remembered beforehand (rather than refreshing my memory after seeing some of the images the outcut scenes thread.)

One more thing, could Finnish fans also tell me was the uncut version on MTV3 Finnish dubbed? Or in English?

Finnish... and I know I have only seen the 1998 airing.

Being able to see it in its original full theater glory must still be nice experience though, keep an eye on the sharptooth biting scene to close that myth about early VHS's :p

^The problem is the "Outcut scenes" topic. None of us can be completely sure what they actually saw or what they imagined under the topic's influence. :yes
Except this scene which I just randomly remembered, and later on by sheer luck found after typing "2" after the dinosaur in the URL to see if they had some pics left on the server from old sold items and yes there was  :p

That should be relatively easy to find out. In Finland we at least have a national movie archive with original theatrical copies of the movies stored and you can go watch them.
Well, could somebody from Finland go to this place and watch them?

I actually stumbled across a petition Let's do something to get those deleted scenes, shan't we?

PS: Does anybody know if there's a list of all airings of the movie in the near future (or does anybody know which tv-stations are airing them?)? I'm especially interested to see the next finnish airing for obvious reasons...

Keep hunting guys!
If we have a member near Helsinki then just contact them and go watch it - http://www.kava.fi/ At least we could close the myth about the biting scene.

The original TV station did air the movie on subscription channels after they reacquired the rights following my contact about the movie, but nobody here had those channels so we couldn't check it. There hasnt been any airings since.

1988 Theatrical Release / The Mysterious Disappearance of the Original LBT

I, for one, have always accepted the possibility that my mind is playing tricks on me. If people can see UFOs, then people could might as well see missing LBT scenes. However, when you have vivid images in your mind it takes a lot of self-discipline to dismiss them completely.
I've thought about that too but it's pretty hard to accept this possibility, since I did find actual cels showing scenes that I remembered beforehand.

I think Spike's laughter at least sounds quite human-made.
When they're climbing up the hill before splitting up.

The only noices Spike uttered in the Original are his laughter in the tar pit scene and perhabs his yawning or his eating sounds... dunno if they have to be voiced by a human being or if they are computer-made.
He does actually say "Food..." in the finnish version at least.

I think the original version of the film was altered quite a bit, which explains why the movie is only one hour and 9 minutes long. I think Littlefoot was supposed to find the Great Valley before them all, but FAR ahead of them, leading to the part where they find the desert, Littlefoot actually mistaking it for the Great Valley. Then, Cera says her "This is your Great Valley?!?!?!??? YOU'RE CRAZY!!!!!" line. If you notice the part where Littlefoot sees his mother's spirit in the clouds, you see the giant rock in the background that killed the Sharptooth, which seems like it was supposed to happen before they killed Sharptooth.
The press were shown an 80 minute version just before the release, that must've been the version that had all scenes finalized and it was further cut down to 69 minutes for theaters.

General Land Before Time / There's something different about this cartoon

When I rediscovered LBT couple of years back and saw the movies, it basically felt like seeing your old best friends again. So yeah, there's something more meaningful than the other cartoons.
