What better way to spend quarantine than discussing one of my all time favorite antiheroes!

1)  Pterano seems to be one of those characters in the fandom for which there is a lot of polarization.  He has numerous fans, but also detractors.  Why do you think he is so polarizing in terms of how fans see the character?

It's easy to see why there's so much back and forth regarding Pterano as he is very back and forth, and his loyalties switch around a lot (from himself and his needs to those he decides to serve). I remember reading (I think it was on here lol) that the Stone of Cold Fire and Pterano was a new spin on the Land Before Time series. Once charming sing-a-longs turned into exciting capers, dark schemes, and even death! I don't think the detraction is undeserving per se; it is Pterano after all, and the guy is as shady as they come

2)  What is your own personal view on Pterano as a character?

Ahh, yes the moment I've been waiting for 
Stone of Cold Fire was a Christmas present back in the day and I remember watching it later and absolutely loving the grittier backstory and the ultra charming, always scheming Uncle Pterano. He was an instant favorite, and the subject of much of my early fanart. It wasn't until later on when I found this site along with some amazing fanfics that I came to fully appreciate how complex and fun this character was, and it made me fall in love with his concept all over again. I find that it is because of his mentality that he is such an enjoyable character. He's dark and expressive, sneaky and manipulative, and the voice acting just adds so much to that. He's such an easy character to identify with and root for, even when he's doing bad things, and you can't help rooting for him as he flies away at the end, hoping that he'll come back soon one day.

There's my two cents 

1) How do you see the original Sharptooth in terms of his motivations?  Is he to be seen as a villain, or as merely another hungry predator in the Mysterious Beyond?

2) What qualities do you think the original Sharptooth has that subsequent sharpteeth in the series lacked?

As a child watching the Original Land Before Time, I remember viewing the Sharptooth as a force to be reckoned with: a fierce, hungry, prowling beast. In short, I really didn't like him. From the angles of the scenes and the way he was portrayed, I clearly remember feeling my skin crawl as I watched that great big looming shadow appear to Littlefoot and Cera, and then hear the thud of footsteps and finally that horrible shrieking roar.

Now as a grown-up, I believe I've come to view Sharptooth as an animal out for his next meal, similarly to how Anagnos described him. And I agree that since the movie is largely from a child's perspective, that the world is big and scary and dangerous (Not saying it ain't to a grownup as well lol).

1) Considering my two very different viewpoints of this character taken at different points in my life, I can say that he's just out for himself, a lone bull wandering the prairies. Sharptooth is hungry and is simply following the rules of nature.

2) Now this is where is gets interesting: this Sharptooth was much more threatening, much more evil, and far more dangerous because of the perspective of the movie: younglings perceiving a threat. Sharptooth was primal and wild and terrifying. He didn't care WHO he went after as long as it meant food. While the resulting sharpteeth in the series had their moments, none of them could quite match that fear, that unsease that OG Sharptooth evoked onscreen

Journey Through the Mists was one of those LBT movies that my siblings always wanted to watch (the other being Secret of Saurus Rock). And thought it was an engaging story, it had many rather "grownup" topics that I didn't recognize as a child - such as the possibility of death (Grandma's "Circle of Life" song ), and Ali's initial aversion to the rest of the Gang of Five.

Ali as a character was so enjoyable. She was funny, brave, and took the initiative. I always liked her dynamic with Littlefoot (Future OTP, I will shamelessly plug XD) as well as with the Gang. She grew a lot in the fourth film and found a special place in my heart - and in the hearts of others, I see.

I like to think Journey gave me my appreciation of angsty themes. I remember feeling fear for Littlefoot and the possibility of losing his grandfather, at Ichy and Dil and the many times they came close to picking off the Gang. Journey stands out because it explored those deeper themes of family and friendship.
