You have moved around a lot Saft. England, New Zealand, Switzerland... did you live at more places? Was it difficult for you to leave homes behind? What was it like to make new homes?

Now Malte your going off topic (/joke) =D

As to your questions, I've only lived in England, NZ and Switzerland but I'm (according to several sources) quite well travelled from an early age).

Although we've only been on holiday to these places:

-Spain (that's a couple of times, I don't know why English people have this affinity with Spain.)
-France (disney land and once with the school, worst time of my life (not the country just the trip with the people...)
-America (Disney land)
-Holland
-Belgium
-Germany
-Italy (Rome only, went for my 18th) plus I've been on the border of italy courtesy of Switzerland.
-Hong Kong
-Singapore (Very clean)
-Luxembourg

As to the moving, I dislike very strongly flying.  Long flights are awful.  I just get anxious....
So of course, I wasn't particularly happy with flying to and back from New Zealand.

It is difficult.  I have (anyway) a harder time to adjust to new surroundings or places.  Compared to my sister, who was able to adjust within a couple of weeks through making new friends at school etc, I had problems.  I found it very difficult.

Typical really that when I begin to adjust and settle, we move to another place.  Although since being back here (in Switzerland), I've been quicker to adjust.  Since I have homeschooling and Mozart, it is easier.

Edit: I corrected Belguim, I spelt it wrong.....
I dislike spelling mistakes.

Also, I'm not sure if fires do class as a natural disaster but I do fear them.  I think dying in a fire would be one of the worst ways to die.  That or dying of cold.

No kidding Saft ;)
I split the last two posts from the old thread as I think that changing home is really a topic worthy of an own thread.
I'm very interested in this as, though the whereabouts of my future life are not clear yet, it may be that I too will have to move far.
I've been living in Dortmund for 23 years before moving to Bochum which is practically next door. I only spend five month on a students exchange. I crave to see more of the world, but I don't know if I have grown too strong roots to leave for good (especially with all my relatives around here).

Moving from England to Switzerland was extremely difficult.  As we had relatives there.  Although (I think, I don't exactly know) the move for my Mum was slightly easier due to the fact that two months before her mother (my maternal Grandmother) died.  I hope that didn't sound insensitive.

As for me, I've never really had any friends, so the move didn't bother me.  It was more of the adjustment of being in a new environment.  Different language, sure I can speak some french but my german....it was non existant back then.

Switzerland isn't very far away from England, so we could visit relatives (or they vice versa) whenever we liked.

Then when we moved to New Zealand, it became very difficult for not only  myself (as expected) but for the rest of us.  We had moved, in reality a day ahead of England.  We may never have seen our relatives again.  So, whilst I wasn't remotely concerned, it was just new place, difficulty in adjusting generally.

My sister and father were the first to adjust.  I didn't really adjust but I was getting help and support, so I felt that I was coping.  Mum, well...she hated New Zealand.

Oh dear, that sounds like a biography of my travels doesn't it?  May have to retitle this Malte with:  "Saft the residentual Snowy Owl's travels'  (/joke) or something along those lines anyway.

I face a similar situation, I should be used to moving by now but like I said.  I find it extremely difficult to adjust and when I do finally begin to adjust like Switzerland, we move.  When I go to University next year, I don't know what will happen.

Oh well, atleast my german has improved since last time I was here in Switzerland.

Not so. Other GOF members probably changed homes too and I want to invite everyone to tell about it.
I do like that Snow Owl avatar by the way :yes
Do you have an MSN account by the way Saft? If so and if you are interested in a chat (not many on my MSN list who are interested in history so far) I would be happy if you added me to your contact list. My MSN address is malte279@hotmail.de

I was joking Malte.
Oh dear, I must be pretty poor at joking if it seem like I've been taken seriously.  Ah well....I'll improve.=)

I have an email account, as for messenger....well, I don't have one.  As I didn't see the point in having the program on my computer due the fact that I had no one to talk to.  However, I can or as I'm typing this have actually gotten the program..

Done it.  I'll add you.

I'm afraid many here may confirm that it is me in the bad habit of taking just about everything serious unless "JOKE" is written all over it :lol

Thank you, that's awesome. I must admit an embarrassing mistake right away though. My address ends .com, not .de, so malte279@hotmail.com it is. Sorry about that.

Oh I've lived tons of places.....but I don't remember many of them as 14 out of the 16 times I've moved I was under 5 years old.  The last two times though were pretty tough.  I moved from Camano Island Washington to Bellingham Washington.  That was hard on me because I had to leave so much behind, but it only prepared me for my most recent move.......From Bellingham Washington to Maplewood Minnesota. :D It was a great move.  Despite the fact we're still living in my Aunts apartment, we'll be moving into our house soon so it won't be bad for much longer. :yes

Moving can be very hard indeed on folks, even a short move of 10 or 30 miles can be.   Even one within the same city.

What sucks the most about moving is moving all the stuff.  You think that pile of boxes will take you 10 minutes to move and it ends up taking you 2 hours. :bang Packing is a nightmare when you have all the fragile computer equipment that I do.  That's why I typically sell just about anything breakable before I move.  You can always buy stuff again.

That is a good idea for some.  It is a hassle, and sometimes you loose stuff you know you packed but can't seem to find.

^ Wouldn't work in case of items of personal value or things no longer available or both though. Many of my books and my LBT stuff could not be sold and bought again. If those were to be brought to another country I reckon I would have to rent some space on some freight ship or something as sending that via mail would probably be about as expensive as buying a whole house in some other country would be.

I've been here for over a year now and I've still got belongings in boxes.

I think with moving to a new place, within a country or to a different country matters on how well you adjust or how quickly you adjust.  So really, it does depend on the person.

As for me, I really dislike moving.  It's hard to adjust.

Malte, it's alright.  I've re-added you.
