My sister is getting ready to move into a new apartment. The pace she picked is a complete ghetto dump. I mean, I drove back there just to look at the place and there are punks hanging out in the parking lot who gave me this look like they'd shoot me if they had a gun. She can afford a better apartment but she's being cheap. She thinks she can save all this money by moving into a dump.  My family has tried to talk some sense into her but she won't listen. I'm worried because this place is rather scary looking. I wouldn't live there if the place was given to me for free, and I had a gun everywhere I went. She's a total knucklehead. I mean, I'm really worried about this. My sister has never been very smart but this is the icing on the proverbial cake of stupid choices she's made. My dad offered her a gun and she wouldn't take it. I don't even know that she'd have the presence of mind to use it even if she did. We're all worried about her but she's a grown adult so I guess it's her choice. She's so desperate and eager to move out of the house that she's willing to risk her safety by moving into a crappy apartment complex that's about one step up from project housing. I guess it's her choice if she wants to have drug dealers and gang bangers for neighbors but damn this worries me.  We're installing cameras and alarms but I'm still worried. :bang

NOT smart.  Maybe when she gets raped or someone breaks into her apartment, she'll come to her senses.  The only thing I could think of is if you have a big scary friend she doesn't know, you could ask him to be a creeper to her while she's there and make her feel unsafe.  Just have her look online at crime statistics for the area she's wanting to move to and that will make her change her mind.  When she sees that in the last week there have been 3 murders, 6 robberies, and 19 assaults, she'll change her mind.

I lived in a gated community across the street from the ghetto when I lived outside Chicago.  Plus, my family comes from Detroit and Atlanta, so I'm very familiar with sketchy places and would NEVER live in a ghetto to save money.  Scary, scary place to be regardless of your gender or race.  Not a smart move on her part indeed :bang.

BTW, there's not a whole lot that actually scares me.  Being in a ghetto does.

I did my research with the place I live.  Not just the fact that I can afford it and buy what I want, but also the fact of how secure it is.  There's 24-hour security where I live.  With that, any trouble-maker is caught in a matter of minutes.  Plus, any accidents are handled pretty quickly. (The place has had a few incidents over the years.)

It's not a smart move when you don't do your research when you move out of the safety of your parents home and into the real world.  The world's a dangerous place and you need to be safe.

A ghetto is not a safe place.  Any sane/smart person knows that.  Sure, the price is attractive, but it's worth it to pay a little more just for the sake of security.

I feel safe where I live.  It's been worth the $725 a month that I pay. (That's not including food, utilities and internet.)

Sadly, it looks like your sister needs to learn the lesson the hard way.  Let's see how long it'll be before her first complaint comes to the parents who will likely say "we told you so".

Tell her that the money she saves isn't worth a trip to the hospital...or the morgue.

If you can't convince her, at least get her to carry pepper spray or something.

Well, my sister moved into that crappy excuse for an apartment today.  Not only is the neighborhood crappy, but the apartment itself sucks.  It reeks of cigarette smoke and there is mold in the kitchen and the sink.  My dad did finally convince her to take his old .38 but she doesn't have a permit to carry it yet and I don't think she'd have the presence of mind to use it.  I hate this situation but I guess there's nothing I can do.  I can't babysit her anymore.  I just hate worrying about it through.

I guess if any good comes from this, I don't have to share a bathroom with her any more.  My sister has no respect for other peoples' personal belongings.  She not only leaves the bathroom a mess every time she takes a bath, but she's always taking my camping gear without my permission and then losing/breaking it.  She lost my old Eagle Scout knife, which had me really pissed off.  My scout master gave me that when I became an Eagle Scout and it's pretty much irreplaceable.  Sure, I bought another one at the local scouting store, but that other one had sentimental value.  She cracked my parents' glass top stove with a skillet and didn't seem to care, but if you so much as touch anything that belongs to her, she goes ballistic.  She's really a you-know-what and I cant fathom how she came to be like that.  She certainly wasn't raised like that.  She's one of those people that has to learn everything the hard way.  She snaps at you if you try to give her advice and thinks everything should revolve around her.

I hope everything turns out alright because she's still part of my family, but part of me is glad to see her move out regardless.  I would be less worried if she had picked a better neighborhood.

Thought I'd follow up on this.  We were unable to talk her out of moving into the crappy apartment, but it's been several weeks now and there haven't been any problems crime wise.  She's still getting the place fixed up.  Now there is apparently mold in the air vents.  Yeah, the place is a total dump, but I did find out that a cop lives in the unit next door and they have their patrol car parked out front.  That's a little more reassuring.
