I was talking to a friend on AIM about video games, several of you might now (especially if you watch G4) Manhunt 2 was banned in England, and rated AO in the US, which doesn't truly bother me, I'm not a bloodshed kinda guy, however, my friend is livid, because it means the game is basically blacklisted... what it comes down to: do you think all the ratings things come from how my friend put it, "parents see video games as babysitters" and so they'd rather the FCC do their job for them?

I personally find many parents too irresponsible, my other example is the Cub Scouts vs the Boy Scouts, the Cub Scouts have MANY children, which is great, they're learning things, that's not the problem, the problem is... it's just another day care so parents can go be 22 again or whatever, whereas Boy Scouts, by then the kid has been matured to the point where he isn't such a "nuisance" and they are almost able to drive, so Boy Scouts isn't near as populated because most of the kids drop out, and in extreme cases, go back to how they would've acted without daycare or parental discretion, this is my 2 cents, how about you?

Are parents just looking for daycare and not taking their own responsibility with their children?

Video games - this topic has popped up at WTJP (our affiliate) before, so I'm just going to cut and paste what I wrote there.  It was actually on video games being too violent, but it carries some weight in this topic.

Sounds like passing the buck to me....kids saying "oh the video game conditioned me to do the same". Bullcrap. Games aren't real; people's actions are. If kids can't understand that games are not real, but based on reality, then they shouldn't even pick them up and hope to copy them in real life.

Plus you can't simply blame to video game... put some blame on the one who bought it for the kid, especially those rated teen or mature. There is no one "cure all" for this problem...many factors are the reason this stuff happens.

Once again, yeah, parents not necessarily doing their job.  Kind of like movie ratings....you don't want your kid to see something, maybe you ought to screen it first because PG can mean anything these days.  :

On scouts, I believe the reason many quit is there is a lot of activities to do besides scouting and it takes a back burner.  I think parents have actually nothing to do with that one or use it as a babysitter.  Scouting can be quite useful.  Video games....eh, not really.

that depends though, (Tim, shhhhh ) at age 11 they're not really doing a _lot_ and, lazy as I am, I can say Scouts can be done with other activities, granted I'm not in any sports, but I know Eagle scouts who are/were, so it's not impossible

some of it is on parents for not encouraging them to continue is it not?

I meant as one gets older, scouts may not be as interesting as say, a school sport.  Most parents will support their children in what they do when it comes to after school / evening activities.

I can't defend that, I've never been a sports fan so I'm not able to give a view that isn't biased

As much as I hate blowing your bias out of the water, sports are pretty much a "big thing" in this country considering millions upon millions participate at all levels (junior, amateur, pro, senior).  As such, I'm going to still say, sports have a much greater chance of attracting individuals as they grow older, and as such, they may not have time for activities they liked when they were younger, if in fact, they enjoy the sport.  Very often these things overlap and you must choose what you want to do more.  

I wouldn't blame parents for not keeping them in scouts if that's what they gave up for sports.  You can learn a good deal there, and really start getting out of a candy-coated world where everything is perfect.  You do not always win in sports, you do have to work alongside people people you may not like, you do have to work with others to accomplish a goal, and you get to see how others participate and what they feel is an important goal to reach (not all teams shoot for the same star).

however sometimes, thats NOT the case too, I know some people who used to be in my den or pack, or troop even, who are now on pot, or they smoke cigarettes, and they're not in sports, or after school classes, or music, or even 18... so some still is definitely parenting...
