This thread is for those of us who have played Red Dead Redemption and as such, it contains major spoilers.  I know this game came out in 2010, but I only just recently started playing it.  I fell in love with it right from the start.   I've gotta say, Red Dead Redemption ranks right up there with Arkham City as being one of the best games I've ever played.  Everything about this game was just amazing, from the graphics, to the characters and voice acting, to the environments and map, to the story itself.  Never mind Grand Theft Auto.  THIS was Rockstar's finest game.

However, the game also has an absolutely soul-crushing ending, and I can't help but wonder if John Marston's entire journey was all for nothing.  Keep in mind that throughout the entire game, John Marston's main goal was to save his family, yet by the end of the game, most of them are dead, including John himself.  Making matters worse, Jack, his son, ends up becoming an outlaw and a gunslinger like his father, the exact thing John wanted to prevent him from becoming.  So, did John Marston ultimately fail in his quest?  Thoughts?

Ultimately I think he did fail, yeah. While he did manage to save his wife and kid (though she didn't last much longer), one of his main efforts was in trying to change his way of life, and make sure they didn't get dragged into a life of violence like him. Jack gunning down an agent and becoming an outlaw completely screwed everything John had been trying to accomplish.

This is one of my favourite games, it's not that often a game has me thinking about the end for a long time after I finish it, but holy crap RDR didn't pull any punches :p I loved how, at least for me, even killing the main agent at the end had no satisfaction - all you're doing is shooting an old man while he's fishing. Such good writing.

It also leaves me to wonder what becomes of Jack afterward.  He no doubt becomes a wanted man.  Also, "taming" of the west means that there is simply no place for a gunslinger to go anymore.  My theory is that Jack leaves the country afterward.  It wasn't uncommon for outlaws and gunslingers from the old west to go to Places like Mexico, South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia.  In fact, a sequel set in Australia or Africa sounds like it could be quite interesting, though it would mean getting rid of the game's western theme.  I'm surprised they haven't made a sequel yet, considering how popular the game was.

As fo what happened to Jack, in GTA5, in Franklin's safehouse, one of the books on his bookshelf is called "Red Dead" written by "J. Marston".  Now remember that Jack was educated and wanted to be a writer.  It's unknown whether Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption are in the same universe, and this could just be an easter egg, but it could also hint that at some point, Jack wrote a book, presumably about his father's exploits.  There are a few additional nots to Red Dead Redemption in GTA5 as well.
