I'm happy to announce that I have the best connection I've ever had because this house is only 3 years old.  Because of that, the practical downloading speed can reach a little past 8mbps.  Upload speeds depend on your connection speed (theoretically you could upload at 24mbps if you had good enough service).  This is great for all my users.

If you want an account, they're still available.  Just PM me and I'll set ya up. :yes

LBTlover, you are spoiling the members and customers of your server!

And we love you for that. :^.^:

Keep it up! :)

Won't matter if my max upload speed is like 50kpbs.  Its capped pretty darn low.  Its pretty disgusting.

^^^That's too low even for only a 6mbps connection.  Try disabling any firewalls you have enabled.  If that doesn't work, go grab a copy of Ubuntu and run an internet speed test off the live CD.  That's just not right.

If you're behind a router, try unplugging it and then unplugging your modem.  Wait 30 seconds then plug the modem back in.  After another 60 seconds have passed, plug the router in and see what happens.

EDIT:  But if you think about it, that's about 250kps you get.  It'll work.  With those speeds it would take about 47 minutes to upload an entire 700mb video.  Uploading some freeware applications, pictures, smaller videos, documents, music, and other files wouldn't be a big issue.

BTW I do allow people to upload copyrighted material to my server if it's protected with a password. This ensures that any wandering passerby can't download the file/s.

That does seem pretty low, Petrie.  That being said, I know ISPs really like to cut upload speeds a lot of the time.  My connection gives me about 60KB/s maximum for upload, even though I can reach 1MB/s or more for downloads.

I'll believe an ISP to be as mean as yours is, Petrie, though that's really brutally slow; I thought mine was bad.  :confused

Get Comcast if you can Petrie.  Their worst package is the 15mbps connection.  They say:

"Promotional Rate is  $19.99/month for 6 month(s) for eligible customers, ongoing price is $42.95/month"

That's pretty darn good Petrie.  If you can get it you should.  With the promotional thingy you don't have to sign a contract or anything.  I just canceled my service and signed up as a new customer to get a discount and now I pay just $140 per month for my 50mbps connection instead of the $300 something I was paying before.

Time Warner has a monopoly on the wiring in upstate NY.  Thanks for the tip though...I did try to find something other than Time Warner when I moved out on my own, and Comcast was one I checked.

250kbps isn't unbearable (I don't really upload anything) but that's typical of all RR customers I think.  Its not spectacular for what I pay for it as part of a packaged deal with cable.  It comes down to do I want the internet at home or not?
