Okay, this boss has given me the most trouble. It’s Professor Putricide from Icecrown Citadel from the second expansion of World of Warcraft. That would be his 25-man, heroic version. On that mode, he is considered by many to be the most difficult boss other than the final, the Lich King. Let me put it like this. Back then, the level cap was 80 and the item level cap was below 300. With the new expansion, the level cap is 85 and the item level cap is currently just shy of 400, meaning the damage we can deal makes the last expansion look like a declawed-kitten brawl. However, I have fought him with a full group of 85’s over and over and over again, and we barely get close to killing him. Let me share an overview of the fight.
The boss will plague players with a disease that will kill them within seconds. Those infected must run to another player to get the sickness to spread. Why spread it, you wonder? If you share it, you get a different debuff that is much less lethal, pretty much just increasing damage taken by his ability. The new person who gets it will have the first form, and he or she must spread it, and so on. People with it need to run away from the tank because the extra damage is a nightmare for healers to work with, even with 85’s. If the tank gets it, he or she will almost always shout over vent, “Hey, someone get over here! I got the plague.”
Throughout the fight, he spawns two types of adds, brown slimes and green ones. The green will stun the target and need to be killed as quickly as possible before it can reach the target. If it will clearly reach the target before dying, everyone nearby needs to run to its target. You see, when a green slime reaches its target, it explodes for massive damage. However, it follows the same mechanic as a lot of cleaves, meaning the more in its range, the more who get hurt, but the damage is spread over all hit. So while one person might get 100,000 damage, with four nearby, four people will get 25,000.
The brown slimes are more annoying for melee. Being melee myself (a death knight) I have to wait for a few seconds after the brown ones spawn. Why? Because they target someone randomly and chase him or her forever until it’s killed. Now do you see why I have to stand back at first? If I run right up to it at the start to attack, and it chooses me as its target, I’ll have no time to get away. It also explodes on contact with its target, though it does much more damage than greens.
On heroic, he will spawn BOTH types at once. If that isn’t bad enough, on 25, players get a debuff that gives immunity to one type of slime. In other words, half the players can only hurt brown ones and the other half greens. If several of the lower dps get the same color, we have a problem because higher-geared players literally cannot help them.
The only other thing that comes to mind is the dps ground effect that spreads across the floor that a player must eat using a giant ghoul thing. If the player is used to it though, I hear this part is very easy.
So yeah, even with a full group around twice as powerful as players could get during this raid’s expansion, I still haven’t been in a group that can beat him. He’s just that troublesome. I’ll show you guys a video of the fight so you can see what he’s like. Unfortunately, this video was made by professionals, so they make it look super easy. Also, this is from a hunter’s point of view, and in my opinion, hunters have by far the easiest time with this fight. So please ignore the cake walk these guys make it out to be, followed by the literal declaration at the end that it wasn’t hard.
