Guan could only stare, his mouth hanging open. Could someone from his own herd have survived and mixed with their neighbors? he thought. They were told before to try and regroup on one side of the muddy lake so they could join the migrations to the Great Valley, but perhaps those that were separated from his family found it impossible to meet across the lake or they found it safer just to live with the neighboring herds, who would often greet them when either side visits.
Guan finally broke his own silence. "I'd had a guess about that, but there was so much confusion during the Earthshake, it was hard to figure out what happened to the others. I don't know if Uncle Odon thought about it either."
