Eriol kept on walking around the village, still immersed on his own thoughts. - "I'm no longer sure if Arianne and me should still be here, we-I have an assassin to hunt down, to kill him so I can put an end to the blood war between his family and mine..." - The Panther decided to go back to the hut, so he can check on Arianne, he did so while still thinking.. and still looking at the remaining Dracons there - "...still, it is good that we could lend a hand in the battle, maybe without us, the casualties could have been much higher... we just need to get Adykon out of that castle, so we can get out of here... but I am not strong enough, I am not the fabled 'Angel of Death' people thought I would become... Maybe the new generation, my son Isaac could be the one?... Well, I would need him to be some years older in order to get his help on this." - But his eyes opened widely after thinking that - "what the hell I am thinking!?, not even Arianne know that the legend can be true and not some freak story about my family.".
After that, he shook his head and went back to the Hut.

Asthia's injuries were bad, but they would only last until one of her clerics were able to come forward with a healing spell designed for the undead... he was called, and within a few hours, he healed her of her injuries.

Adykon went over the notes... these were rituals... the bone ritual, the blood ritual, the mind ritual, the senses ritual, the breath ritual, and the core ritual. All of these were collected by Asthia... using any of them was dangerous and difficult. Many have tried to use them... none succeeded. Adykon was the best candidate so far... and Asthia knew that Adykon would either succeed... or die trying. Either way, she and the dark master would win.

Eriol returned to the hut, but it was empty, he then began walking the surrounding areas, and then he saw her, sitting near Vespion and other members of the party. He came closer to her back and then he placed his arms around her in a gentle hug.
"Oh, morning dear." - Arianne said in slight surprise to her husband.
"Morning." - he replied as he broke the hug and then face her with a kiss.
"I had no idea where you could be, so I came here... maybe we can get a plan working." - she said as she saw Eriol sitting next to her.
"Well, that can come in handy, we need to be prepared... we cannot just wait for Adykon to do whatever task he is forced to do.... hopefully not make anything that can release something evil." - Eriol said that, not even imaginating he is close to the truth.

Adykon's first task was to go down into the tunnels beneath where Rhiga had been held. Although the tendrils extended from the ceiling, the bulk of the horror was located underneath the tower's lowest rooms...

Opening a wooden door that led to a ladder, Adykon climbed down... and down... into the darkness, which was only broken by some scattered torches which were kept lit by some kobold servants who were unfortunate enough to have such an unenviable task. Each ritual was difficult, and time consuming. He would not be able to complete them all in a day...

"At this point, there isn't much we can do..." - Arianne commented with a sigh. - "... I don't really know too many spells that can be used as an offensive maneuver, I only know some defensive and preventing spells." - Preventing spells are those used to avoid an enemy from attacking, it can be very effective but it doesn't make the damage an offensive spell can make.

Eriol looked at his wife and placed a hand over hers. - "Your spells are very useful, they sure have helped us all a lot, since the battle in the Temple. I don't think I would want it any other way". - Eriol's words made Arianne to smile.

Adykon approached the bottom of the pit. Here was where he had to recite the bone ritual. After saying some words in an archiac language, the room started to change. The rocks of the cave began to twist, contorting into the shape of bones... but only in a certain room.

The hut they were in had rudimentary bedding, but there were pillows made of straw and bound in the same material that made the tribe's clothing.

"No, Marcus, I don't believe you have" Rhiga said, as she held her tail, which was wrapped around her legs, rubbing it.

"Wow. It must be nice to know your father." Rhiga replied, stretching her left foot. "I had more siblings than you, but no dad."

"I almost never saw any of the males that my mom mated with" Rhiga said. "I knew they were getting her pregnant, but there were... well, mom said she almost never saw the same male twice... and they only told her their name a part of the time. It was also hard to keep track as, like many of us females, she usually mated with several males in one night. She usually spent more time mating than taking care of us, but she usually got home in time to feed us. My older siblings could get us food if mother wasn't around. It wasn't that she was neglectful... but she just couldn't overcome her urges to be... satisfied. Few females can..." Rhiga said, explaining her situation.

"Sometimes, mom would return all relaxed, and it would be hard to get her to do much of anything for us. My siblings and I didn't want to stress her and ruin her good mood, as this would make her punish us for it..." she continued.

Arianne and Eriol looked at each other, she then leaned on her husband's chest while closing her eyes. He embraced her.
"We wouldn't have get this far without you, Arianne." - Eriol whispered to her. He leaned his head over her's, softly. But there was something different: In the last few weeks, the mating season made her emit pheromones to attract males of her specific race, but now, he couldn't sense as much as before. - "Could this mean?" - Eriol thought, but he doesn't want to jump to conclusions.
She stayed right there, feeling happy now, relaxed. A moment like this have no happened often since some time, and maybe more dangerous time will come.

Adykon continued on in the tunnels beneath Asthia's tower. He was up to the breath ritual... the second one on his list. It seemed as if he was in the "body" of the horror... but this was a series of caves, not a creature... the floors were clearly stone, there were clearly stalagmites and stalactites, and if it had been living, there would have been blood coming out of the excavated sections when it had been cut into...

"When I left, there were over a dozen half-siblings" Rhiga replied. "While I haven't asked her, I know that mom would definitely have made more." As she spoke, Rhiga stretched her lithe body and sighed.

She thought back to earlier days...

(flashback)

Rhiga ran down the streets of Hekaga, across the hard pavement, and through the bustling crowds of the bazaar. As a poor youth, there was much temptation for her to steal from them... her family could never afford even the most basic items at the stands, but her mother had told her not to steal from them, as the city guards would not think twice about taking her away, regardless of whether or not she was a child.

She passed by stands filled with clay pots, some with scenes of ancient myths painted on them, she passed merchants hawking bronze plates and cups, and vendors selling beads and glass. Various goods, silver, gold, rugs, ivory, and dozens of other articles, common and gaudy... she took none of them... but the greatest temptation lay ahead of her...

Food. Her mother had once told Rhiga that everything was food for something... but that most of it was not for her. Walking by stands selling fragrant bread, smoked meats, succulent melons, and fresh fish... it was too much for her to take anymore. She hadn't eaten anything but one meal a day for three days, and even then, it was nothing more than some stale bread her mother could get. When Rhiga protested, Vaeri said it was all she could afford to get. When Rhiga had complained that her mother was eating a whole meal while her children ate so little, she was scolded and told that a dancer needed energy to bring in money, and that her youngest children would starve to death if her body was unable to produce milk for them, which took much energy.

A six year old girl needed more to eat than old bread. Vaeri had been teaching the girl how to dance, but Rhiga was still far too young to make money that way, so she was hired out with hundreds and hundreds of other girls to a variety of different tasks, most of which involved textiles, including many of the rugs sold at the markets. Even with a trickle of extra money, there was still not much left; Vaeri needed that money to cover the extra costs of the new children...

Eventually, Rhiga could bear it no longer. Surely, one melon missing meant nothing... no one would notice... no one would care. Was there not a god of thieves in some pantheons? Surely the gods would not hold it against her if she took just one melon from the stands. Hiding behind a large pile of fruits, the Dracon girl grabbed one...

No one had noticed her, no one had cared. She ran to a back alley and quickly ate the fruit. Tearing it open with her claws and fangs, she ate all of the sweet orange flesh of the melon. Within three minutes, her snout and teeth were covered in the fruits' sweet juices. Licking it up, Rhiga wondered if she would be doing the wrong thing if she got some for some other hungry children. After all, her family was quite large... and underfed. Maybe an easier to move fruit this time... aha! She found a stand of pomegranates!

Just a few of them... she would not take many... just to feed her family. After taking a couple she ran, but failed to take into account three things. First, the vendor that was busy serving another customer could still see his stand, second, that running carrying so many fruits would not be easy, and third, that an adult dracon was faster than she could ever hope to run...

After her capture, Rhiga was sent into a sweatshop belonging to the king of Hekaga... to make textiles for the palace... there, she would work off her debt. Her mother was told nothing; they didn't ask her for her name or anything... and they didn't feed her anything but a thin cereal of millet the whole time. After three days of almost nonstop work, they sent her home, with a warning that had she been older, the punishment would have been worse; they would have given her the mark of the thief; a tattoo placed on her arm which every Dracon is Hekaga who would ever employ her would think to check for.

Vaeri was relieved to see Rhiga alive, but angry that she had missed three days of work. Instead of getting rest, the poor girl was sent back out to labor... resulting in her becoming so ill, she had to be rushed to a temple and be healed in a charity ward. The girl Rhiga would not steal again, but when she grew up and gained the ability to bear children, the female could no longer be called a "girl" anymore... at least, not in the strictest sense. She would steal again...

(end flashback)

Meanwhile...

Adykon staggered out of the caves, exhausted. He would continue his rituals tomorrow, no doubt... he had no other choice, in the long run... his geas compelled him to act.

You've had a very tough life.. being a thief.. just to put food in your mouth.. Marcus said quietly and he tenderly ran his claw over Rhigas figure, stopping briefly over her brests.. before moving to caress her face.. "I had started to fear i'd never see you again.' he whispered..'But now.. holding you, feeling you, knowing my seed is growng inside you, makes it all worth it.."

Rhiga hugged him tightly. All her life, she had been independent... she had to be, because no one else was going to take care of all her needs... her mother could barely keep the family alive, and in some cases, she failed to do even that. The most vulnerable age for her siblings was the point in time when they were too old to suckle her breast, but too young to eat hard foods... being unable to afford much more than stale bread and some occasional healthy food, at least two half-siblings of Rhiga's had dies to illnesses brought on by malnutrition.

As for the seed... Dracons had enough medical knowledge to tell that it was only "half" a seed; and that the female contributed an egg as well. Regardless, females were conceived of as the soil, and males as the farmers... and this was true to a large extent. She also knew what the "plow" was that put the seed in her...

Meanwhile...

Adykon rested on the bed that Asthia had prepared for him. He wasn't in her room anymore, but she didn't force him to sleep on the floor either; he had his own bed... even if he had to share a room with several kobold servants... and share a single chamber pot.  :confused

Despite the indignity of his situation, he thought back on the days of his life... how he had left his herding life to become a solider, then a mercenary...

(flashback)

Goats... goats... and MORE goats... that's all his life seemed to be... Adykon the goat-herder, son of a goat-herder, and for his inheritance, he would get... goats!

Working all day with hooved animals was NOT his idea of a future... especially on such marginal land... hardly a tuft of grass left... and yet it was all his family had. Still, they ate well enough... these animals could survive on almost anything... even scrub... which is most of what his family's land had left. The problem was... well... they were poor. That was it. They had few possessions; Adykon had a dagger, his shirt, some short pants, and a big stick with which to herd his trip of goats.

It wasn't that they went hungry... they had goat meat, milk, and on occasion, some cheese... but that was pretty much all they ate. Their land was drying up too. In another decade, it might be all sand. The river had been diverted to the nearest city and the groundwater was wearing out. The cities... where the dispossessed and desperate farmers went in hopes of finding work... few ever found it...

Adykon and his brothers were all old enough to leave home... and a couple already had done so. Before he could go of his own volition, Adykon found himself conscripted into the army of the lord of the region... while his mother and sisters wept, Adykon was glad to go, and his remaining brothers were all happy for him. His father was sad to lose some help on the homestead, but acknowledged that it was better for his son to go and have a future... if he survived the battlefield, that is.

And survive he did. After many a battle, Adykon found himself let go when the war ended, and, along with some comrades-in-arms, became mercenaries. Eventually, he parted ways with them, but gained valuable skills, powerful weapons, and well-made armor, and from then on, was a trained adventurer, ready and willing to join questing parties in hopes of gaining wealth, glory, or just the experience of the adventure itself.

From there, the rest was history. One adventure saw him hired by Arcantas, and after a trip to the lost city, he found himself back in the place where he had started the adventure from... only to end up... here.

(end flashback)

Yes, Adykon led an interesting life, that was for sure. He had never gone back to his homestead again. Some days, he wondered what had happened to his family. Had they all moved to a city? Did they go on to greener pastures in another plot of land? Or were they still there? Adykon had no time to worry about that now...
