(OOC: I'll control Jake until Metadude gets back)

Jake gently rubbed her back, using his human hand for most of the massaging... Sasha had a lot of tension built up, and he could feel knot after knot loosening under his touch... this was beneficial to her too, as her magic would now flow more efficiently through a looser, more relaxed body.

Adykon completed the rituals, save for the very last one. The horror beneath the tower was all but awake... even now, power could be felt coursing through the very stones of the cave... a dark, draining, consuming, engulfing energy that would easily absorb the very life force from this valley as a sponge absorbs water.

And now, it had come to this... the heart ritual. The very last one. Adykon went over to the central cave of the caverns... and awaiting him were Asthia and Arcantas...

"Let us begin Adykon. First, you must climb up to the stone platform in the center of the room. I will stand on the right one, Arcantas on the left."

"Let's just get this over with!" Arcantas shouted.

"I do believe you are jealous. Is it that I, a female, triumph, where you, a male, had failed? Or is it a more personal failure... that you failed to unleash a similar being so long ago... but you were stopped... killed at the hands of Adykon?"

"I wish to see nothing more than your triumph, Asthia. A victory for you is a victory for the dark master..." the vampiric male told the female.

The stone platforms were raised out of the side of the wall, requiring that Adykon climb up; Asthia and Arcantas used levitation spells to rise up on two other stone platforms. By the time they were all up there, the three of them were over 20 meters in the air... quite a drop.

"Now Adykon, recite the final ritual!" Asthia commanded him, a gleam in her eyes...

Adykon took out the parchment on which the ritual was written and began to chant:

"Oh great horror, We summon thee!"

"Oh, Shadows of Darkness, enter the land of the living!"

"Oh, Master of the eternal night, return to your own body, and live again!"

And, with great pain, completing the terms of his geas, Adykon recited the final line...

"Oh great horror We summon thee!"

And with that, the whole cave complex began to shake, and the parchment flew into Asthia's hands. Her energy continued to flow into the horror, enabling the spell to continue. Arcantas's power was also being used for this purpose; the spell was complete, but it was taking time for the effect to manifest...

"Yes, ah ha ha ha! Yes! The spell is completed, and the horror awakens!" Asthia shouted, triumpantly.

Just then, Arcantas launched a fireball at Adykon, knocking him down, making him dangle off of the side of the platform!

"No!! How dare you ?!" Asthia yelled at Arcantas, launching a bolt of magic from her hands at him. The bolt hit him, but as it did, it also shattered the bonds of her control over him!

"Ah, you have just shattered the bonds which bound me! Now we shall see who is the true archmage!" Arcantas shouted back.

A brief duel commenced. While each side was powerful indeed, Asthia's magic was beating that of Arcantas's; her vampiric form was more refined than his, and she had more experience casting spells in an undead body.

"I am still a far greater Master of Magic than you. I am a far more powerful Vampire than you. Do you really think your spells can harm me? Ha ha ha ha ha! Guess again..." Asthia boasted.

"But my dear Asthia, I do not need to cast spells at you to destroy you. I intend only to destroy my enemy, the one you seem so fond of. Care to watch him die?"

"No! I will not let him die!" Asthia screamed. Panicked, she teleported between Arcantas and Adykon, as the former cast as spell which conjured a Dragon's head. The spell alone was countered by Asthia easily enough, but, as his research had shown, Arcantas's spell attracted the horror. From out of the cave, several black tendrils emerged, and wrapped around Asthia! Now that the horror was being released, they were far more powerful than the ones which had drained Rhiga; they were able to absorb Asthia's ENTIRE life force, magical energy, and her physical body... which they did.

Asthia had been destroyed.

"The fool! I knew that the horror would be attracted by that spell. Now Asthia will have all the Darkness she so desired, and much, much more." Arcantas said, now free from her control forever. The first part of my vengeance is complete. Now I can enjoy watching you die slowly... and painfully.

"Damn you, Arcantas! I swear, I killed you once, now I'm gonna ki-" but before Adykon could complete that thought, Arcantas blasted the stone Adykon was standing on. Adykon had gotten up during the magical duel, and was no longer dangling off of the side, but the stone upon which he stood was being blasted away...

"There's no place you can run, and no place for you to hide. Soon there won't even be a place to stand upon. Getting worried, Adykon?"

"Not a bit !" Adykon pulled out the greave from his leg, and it quickly reshaped itself into a staff... the staff the archmage had given him!

"Ha ha hah! This is rich! A warrior with a magical staff that has almost no charge in it. Go ahead, take your one shot, which I will easily deflect, and then, I will send YOU falling to your death!"

Adykon aimed the staff at Arcantas, and focused on making it fire an energy bolt at him, but instead, he felt a compulsion to throw the staff instead, which he did. As it raced through the air, and in a split second, the staff reshaped itself into a spear  which went right through Arcantas's heart, destroying HIM as well!

The staff rose under its own power from the corpse of the vampire, and deposited itself back in Adykon's hands. A voice emanated from the brown wooden item, that of the archmage.

"You have done well, Adykon. This day, you have freed the valley from unspeakable evil. Without the power of either Asthia or Arcantas to complete the spell, the horror will remain trapped in its own dimension. To prevent it from being released, burn the parchment with the rituals so that no one may even use them again. Without Asthia, the soldiers here will automatically revert to the direct command of the dark master... they will leave before long, and then, there will be nothing to stop the shamans of this valley from coming together and casting the purification ritual needed to remove the horror from this land for good!"

Adykon paused for a moment...not quite sure what to say. Then, he spoke.

"I could never have done it without your help... but... that seemed too easy. Two archmages dead, a horror stopped, and the valley saved in all of five minutes... it
can't be that simple..."

"And it isn't." The female voice told Adykon, continuing. "Evil has a way of sowing the seeds of its destruction. Asthia and Arcantas were fighting on the same side, for the same thing, under the command of the same master... and yet, they could only destroy each other. That is the way of evil; each one under its influence thinks only of himself, even when doing things for others. Arcantas was driven by his hatred of you to the detriment of his mission, and his hatred of Asthia was a liability that the dark master should never have overlooked."

"It is perhaps ironic that it was not Asthia's hatred that brought about her death... it was not true love that caused her to come between Arcantas and you, but it was her female instincts. She felt close to you in body, but not in soul; even her being a vampire could not prevent her from feeling attraction, but in the end, she was unable to realize that true love needs free will; compulsion is contrary to love, it must be arrived at by choice and one's own heart. By putting you in a clearly dangerous situation and yet still retaining her... attraction... Asthia set herself up for trouble. I wouldn't be surprised if she half-expected you to be in mortal danger... she must have thought that her magical powers would be enough to fix ANY problem... her mistake."

"Even though they could capture you, those archmages couldn't overcome their own evil, and in the end, it destroyed them." the voice finished.

Adykon took the staff with him and ran from the tower. All of the guards were in a panic. They had felt Asthia die, for they too had geases placed in them... spells which dated from their youth! Now that they no longer had to obey Asthia or the dark master, they made no effort to stop the fleeing mercenary. The kobold servants fled the tower as well; with no vampiress or guards, there would be no one left to protect them from the angry dracon tribes.

Making sure he still had the amulet with him, Adykon ran back through the woods. After a few hours, he was within sight of the tribal village he had once been to with the party. He was surprised that they were still there; he had caught Vaeri's scent.

Meanwhile...

Dememoras the Great, also known as the Dark Master, viewed the loss of his subordinates with rage. While he had legions to spare, and many more like Asthia and Arcantas, their loss prompted him to take matters into his own hands. He would not risk an appearance in person in the prime material plane... not in the open anyway... his dimension served as a means of hiding himself. If he was discovered, all of the Dracon magical and religious institutions would oppose him, save for a few groups on his side. He did not want that. Not yet.

Instead, Dememoras cast a spell, creating an Avatar of himself; a creature with an appearance akin to his own, but not identical. Imbued with a fraction of his power, the avatar was still more than twice as powerful as Asthia and Arcantas combined. It's mission was simple; break Adykon's spirit. He did NOT want the mercenary to die... not yet. There was still a chance to convert him... just as his plan to win over Eriol was underway...

The avatar stood at over 2.5 meters tall. Like it's master, it was not fully Dracon, but had the appearance of one in many ways. Black scales, long black horns, red eyes, white fangs, and a long tail. It stood and walked like a Dracon, and had a deep, impossibly rough voice which sounded like rocks banging together. This was a derivation of Dememoras's appearance; it was not what he actually looked like.

Casting another awesome spell, Dememoras ripped open a hole in the fabric of reality, and sent the avatar out through it. It emerged in the village, right in front of Adykon and the party!

The party was stunned. All of them were there. Adykon, Jake, Rex, Sasha, Eriol, Minna, Isla, Marcus, Arianne, the Fauxen, Vaeri, Vespion, and Rhiga.

"Dememoras sends you his regards, Adykon. You know him as the Dark master. He sent me here to greet you personally. That was quite a feat you pulled off in that tower. You are strong, strong indeed." The avatar spoke. "Unfortunately, your strength is misplaced. You see, it is nature's will that the powerful should crush the weak, and that the adaptable defeat the stagnant. You are strong, but it remains to be seen how adaptable you are. Since you have chosen to play the role of hero, you will learn what price heroes PAY!!"

And with that, the Avatar, unleash a stream of pure arcane power, arcing wildly through the air! It's trajectory seemed like it had no aim, but within a split second, it had hit it's mark! Vaeri!

The dancer had no time to dodge, move, or even think. The bolt hit her with enough magical energy to fry a horse. She fell over, dead. No last words. And with that, the Avatar of Dememoras disappeared in a puff of black smoke without a trace.

There was a stunned silence for a whole minute afterwards. No one could believe what had happened. Vaeri's corpse lay where it had fallen. This was real. This was permanent. Vespion's magic could not revive the dead, and even if they could get her to be revived, they would have to have it done at a temple, and the amulet Adykon had could not bring back a dead body to Minbenthac. Vaeri would have to be laid to rest here.

The first one to react was Rhiga, who ran over to her dead mother...

Rhiga was racked with grief. Tears flowed out of her eyes like a salty river. Adykon, for his part, staggered over to Vaeri's corpse and was only able to kneel down, and stoke it gently, as if she were only sleeping.

Within a few minutes, his sadness turned to RAGE! Now, stopping Dememorus wasn't just an issue of saving the world, or even of justice. For Adykon, it was personal.

Arianne couldn't believe what happened, just for the shock of what happened she knelt in the floor in total disbelief. - "No, she w-was my friend... w-hy this happened?." - Tears began flowing on the female Panther's eyes.

Eriol's face didn't show much emotion since he has seen death far too often. He just knelt next to his wife, near Vaeri and made a prayer. After that, he said. - "No doubts the Dark Master has plans for you Adykon, so he must be stopped before he tries something else." - he then tried to comfort Arianne.

About an hour later, the party had prepared a grave for Vaeri. They removed her meager clothing and lay her corpse on the side of the grave. Each member of the party came to pay his or her last respects. Selturma was almost as affected by this as was Rhiga. The poor girl had come to regard Vaeri as a godmother of sorts. Now, she would never talk to her, dancer with her, smile with her, laugh with her, and learn anything from her again.

Rhiga sobbed. "I never got a chance to tell her that I'm pregnant... And my siblings! What will become of them?! They'll never see mother again! My sisters... they can't make it without mother, they CAN'T! And my brothers... they probably don't care..." Rhiga was getting mad... "They are probably happy that mom is gone, and by the time they find out she's dead, they'll be off getting other females pregnant and going drinking until the sun rises!"

Rhiga's brothers were mostly adults. The few younger males were all apprenticed to artisans. Vaeri's death cut off the most vulnerable members of her family...

Adykon was hurt by Vaeri's death in more than one way. He had not intended to marry her, but now... he wishes that he did. He was not just angry at Dememorus, he was angry at himself. Would this have happened if he had married her like he said he would? Would ANY of this have happened? Was it supposed to? No... but... it happened. How they dealt with it was what mattered now.

A bit of water was sprinkled onto Vaeri's body, still looking fresh and decomposed. Her beauty would never again grace a stage... not that any Dracons really cared... her best features were present in countless other females, and her pattern of living had been unremarkable. Still, she had shown true love to at least one male, and was able to curve her ways for him. That alone was more than could be said of most poor females...

Vaeri's body was placed in the grave, and a stone was placed at it's head, awaiting the application of magic to quickly make it into a proper burial place.

isla cried silently, she like the others had grown fond of vaeri..who hhad taught her many things about being a female.. 'you were like a godmother to me vaeri' ilsa said through her tears.. 'niow rest.. you've earned it.. with a gesture she closed the ground above vaeri's grave..with another gesture a gravestone appeared at the head of the grave on it was vaeri's name and the words, mother, lover, friend.. you will be missed..' the dates of her birth and death would be added later..but for now the simple gravestone would suffice..

Adykon took out the staff, and, hoping against hope, tried to make it do something to bring Vaeri back. No luck. It's magic was no good now. Adykon placed the staff into the ground in front of the grave. If nothing else, Vaeri would finally have a valuable item to her name...

Now it was time for the party to depart. The chief had assured Adykon that his people would take over the tower and use it as a fortress to protect the valley, and that in a week, there would be shamans from other tribes gathering to seal off the darkness forever...

Akito sat, stunned, on a roof of one of the huts, holding his swords.
"Am I...so powerless that I can't even save one life?"
He said, crying, even though no tears fell...

The other Fauxen were all reacting similarly, although Touga had taken it the worst.  He had locked himself into a hut with magic, refusing all but drink as he sat there.

As Minna spoke to Toby, a quiet voice spoke up.
"Indeed.  Grow strong Toby.  Grow up so that this doesn't have to happen again."
Kuja stepped out from a shadow portal, tears apparent on his face.  Akio stepped out and stood next to him, looking ashamedly at the ground...
