"I'll go!" Selturma yelled as she jumped at Rex. He caught her in his arms, then let her down.

"What, won't you carry me there?" she said with a wink, then proceeded out the door on foot... on her own two feet.  :lol

Kuja sighed irately.
"Just like the temple.  They don't ever seem to be forward with what they think or plan."  He said coldly, shaking his head.  Akito tossed his hair with a hand, then casually kicked the ground.
"How do they expect us to fight Dememoras without telling us the whole story?"
He said, then swore quietly.

Miki looked up from a large book.
"Perhaps I can shed some light on things..."
He said quietly, smiling at the others.

"What are-? What is? What do you mean?" Vespion asked the fauxen.

Suddenly, all eyes were on Miki. These Fauxen were a strange sort... and so little was known of them...

"Go on" Adykon prompted Miki, not quite believing what he just heard "We'll listen."

"okay everyone let's go!" said Rex as all of the youths ran out the door and down the street to the kings castle. It took them a long time to reach the castle but once they got there they had to tell the guards that they were apart of the party...the guards didn't believe them but after a while they let the youths into the castel.

The guards had been told how to recognize the rest of the party; they had seen Rex, Selturma, and Sasha before. As for Alina... well... they didn't know her, but they assumed she was with the adventuring party.

Adykon quickly greeted the kids as Miki had told the party that he could "shed some light on things."

Miki smiled a little and nodded, then held up his book.
"This is a history of the Dracon lands.  I thought it'd be good to know more, so I started looking this over, and..."
He skimmed through the pages a little.
"It mentions the name Dememoras several times.  And all of them in different eras.  One of the things I've started thinking is, what if Dememoras isn't just a Dracon?  What if he is actually something else that takes control of a host Dracon, and then simply...vanishes somehow when they die?"
He said, looking at the assembled party...

Vespion interjected.

"Dememoras is a creature who is not natural... we don't know that he is truly among the living. He was reported to have been killed long, long ago, but came back somehow. Do you mind if I see that book?"

After being given the book, the cleric looked it over.

"It's unlike any historical tome I have ever read... and the language it is written in... it is Draconic, but no one writes like this anymore... with all the 'thees' and 'thous.' I don't know how old it is... but it is clear that whoever wrote it was closer in time to Dememoras's first attack than any other history writer I have read. We know that he does NOT possess a host, however. Had Dememoras done that, we would have been able to tell long ago."

"Who is this... 'we' you speak of?" Adykon asked.

"The priests at the Great Temple. Even if he possesses another creature, there is no way for him to totally hide his energy signature."

Annette smiled rather brightly at that news as she stepped forward.
"Well that's good news for me. As I specialize in tracking energy both life and magical." She then turned to Vespion and asked, "Even if he doesn't possess a host body now, do you priests happen to know where he died the first time?"

"That's the problem. Dememoras CANNOT possess host bodies at all, PERIOD." Vespion clarified. "We know that he was killed, but he was not resurrected. There are several possibilities as to what might have happened, none of which can be ruled out, save for the chance he took over another living creature's body. And no, we don't know where he died... it was thousands of years ago, and the historic record is very poor from that time."

Miki looked at him.
Perhaps it's not a possession, per se.  Perhaps it's something else entirely.  Perhaps he is simply a name?"
He pondered...

"Simply a name? What do you mean?" Adykon queried.

"You mean there are others who pose as Dememoras?" Vespion suggested.

"Or that it was a rumor that the Dark Master can possess others?" Rhiga added.

Miki thought for a moment.
"What I was thinking is...perhaps Dememoras is simply a name that a person takes on every few eons, as a way of inspiring fear and such..."
He said quietly.

"We know that there is one Dememoras... one Dark Master. We know of his organization... although not nearly enough to tell who is in it, or where the Dark Master himself is hiding. We DO know that he commands powerful forces, and that he is returning... thanks the gods there is only ONE of him!" Vespion replied.

"Well, that is a relief, just one Dark Master makes things less complicated." - Eriol said.

"I have heard stories about people taking a legendary name, to allow the continuation of whatever legacy the original left. But maybe that is not the case here, and Dememoras did find a way to not fully die when he was defeated, and now he gained the strenght to fight back." - Arianne commented with a serious look on her face.

"That's exactly the problem" Vespion continued.

"Of all the buried threats, hidden secrets, and ancient dangers our land has to offer, his is the worst. He died, but is back... and his power and knowledge have had milennia to grow..."

In regions of the world whose civilization was thousands of years old, ancient powers did not necessarily die when the regime collapsed. Empires fell, kingdoms crumbled, and old secrets were lost. Sometimes, knowledge in a certain field was rediscovered and lost several times. An individual who lived through the entirety of civilization in a region would thus be possessed of a VERY large amount of knowledge... in the hands of an evil mage, this could be horrific.

Miki nodded grimly.

"But what about in the hands of a good mage?"  Utena interjected, looking at the group...

"Good mages who live that long are just as rare as evil ones" Vespion replied. "At that level of power, a good mage usually doesn't interfere much with the world, as he has usually ascended to some higher level of existence, or just doesn't care for the world and all its mortal trivia. Some good mages stay active in the world, but they limit what they can do, as they know that well-intentioned plans which require a massive amount of magical energy have the tendency to backfire."

Adykon had heard of this, and added to Vespion's tale.

"There was once a wizard who was so powerful, he could make the rain fall to save a land from a drought."

"But... a lot of mages can make it rain." Rhiga told Adykon.

"I know, but this one was powerful enough to alter the rain patterns permanently. He was centuries old, but was not as wise as he thought he was. A few years later, he returned to discover that the land he had given the rain to was suffering from catastrophic flooding, and that several other lands were experiencing drought. He failed to realize that changing the patterns of nature too much can have unintended consequences... or changing ANY system too much can cause disaster."

"That isn't as big an issue for Dememoras... he WANTS there to be chaos and destruction." Vespion added.

"Does it say in that book, where Dememorus attacked first?' Margas said fingering a silver necklace that hung from his neck "or can you not tell?" Listening to the conversation had piqued his interest.. " if you want my opinion, i doubt thast Dememorus is simply a title, the Dememorus we are facing now is likely the same as the one the ancients fought. But he is not immortal, he died once, by the hand, supposedly, of a great warrior, and , in thoery, could die again. Am I far off?"

"Well, we don't know." Vespion replied. "We just don't know. Some beings that are immortal can come back to life after their physical body is destroyed, other beings that ARE mortal can be brought back to life. There are some theories to Dememoras's true nature... that he is a lich, maybe, or that he was resurrected by his followers all that time ago... or maybe he really IS immortal somehow. Again, we don't know for sure, and I hate that."

"Considering that he appeared before history was well-recorded and has stayed hidden for so long... it would be hard to know much about him... and of what is said of him... it is difficult to separate what is fact from fiction. Rumors and false knowledge tends to pile up over the course of thousands of years." Adykon said, but as he spoke, the exact words were repeated in his head by a female voice... the archmage... again.

"You! What are you doing in my head... again?" Adykon thought, his lips not moving.

"I was contacted by the archmage of the palace. He told me to contact you as soon as possible. I cannot stay for long... my home is still under siege; it has been ever since my husband got blown up by Dememoras."

"Blown up?! Wait... you and your husband... were the ones who helped us with Arcantas... that's right... it has been a while..."

"And I helped you again with him and Asthia under her tower... yes, we get along well, don't we? I'll contact you again tonight... it is easier to do so when the recipient of the spell is sleeping..."

"Alright then... but can you tell me one thing? Do you know what Dememoras is?"

"I know as little as you do on what he is... I can tell you what he intends to do... but I already did that. I have forseen that we will meet in person, and that you will lead the forces that will lift the siege on my palace..."

"Alright!"

"... or die trying."

"... oh. I'm not so fond of that option."

"And yet, I sense you will be there. You and I share much in common, Adykon. We have both lost the one we loved to Dememoras, and fate has more plans for us still..."

"Yes... he just teleported in and... hey! How'd you know about that? Have you been scrying on me?"

"That is correct. You should be grateful; if I didn't know what you were doing, I couldn't have been there to help you. I only take a look once or twice a day at most; I don't have the energy to check much more than that..."

"Right. Well, I guess I'll 'see' you tonight."

"It'll be the stuff dreams are made of... see you then."

And with that, the voice in Adykon's head disappeared.

"She has a lot of explaining to do... I don't think she's told me everything... and what was her name... dang it... I think she told me but I forgot... and I'm going to ask Vespion to use a spell to detect scrying from now on..."
