Toby easily dodged the ball of darkness. As a dragon, he was a creature who had instinctive knowledge of how to fly. Therefore, he had every advantage over the cursed, unnatural, and sarcastic female whom he flew again. She was fast in the air for a Lycan with wings, but she was not nearly as maneuverable. Next to him, she was quite slow, and her aim was not remotely as good as his. Furthermore, Toby knew that inside, Violet was scared of him.
That's how it worked with those infected by dark magic; they were afraid of something. Afraid of losing their power, afraid of being beaten, afraid of falling behind the other practitioners of the dark arts in the extent of their skill and power. Most of all, they were afraid of being held accountable to a higher power. It was not so much death that frightened them, but of the possibility that someone VERY powerful would judge them...
Asthia had been afraid of death. It was a contributing factor in her decision to become a vampire. Toby knew this, and even at his young age, he found it ironic that in an attempt to avoid her demise, Asthia brought it about, then kept on going. The main reason she had made herself a vampire was to gain power, though. Was it the same with Violet? Did she gain her dark powers on purpose? Toby didn't know and didn't care.
"You think that you're so tough, Lycan? You don't know what fear is until you've faced a dragon!"
