The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

Youri walked back to the body of the monster he had slain with the assistance of Dracon magic, and his rapier hands again drew from his arms.  With a quick swipe, the head of the evil creature was separated from its body.  "Just making absolutely sure..." he said as his blades retracted once more.

Torvin sighed. "Stygium coating it is," he said. He then turned to Cassia and Alima. "Cassia, Alima could you fetch me some Stygium, Mithril, Carborundum, Darksteel and Orichalc, please? The metal store room is in the back,"

He then headed to his workshop to prepare the necessary tools to make the metal tube.

Ophion, Silverfang, and the rest left the catacombs. The bloody creature's corpse was left behind. It was indeed dead. No other living creature in Minbenthac saw its body. No living creature...

Stepping out of a swirling black portal, a two-and-a-half meter tall creature emerged. No one was there to see it, but had a pair of living eyes beheld it, the horror that it was would have been apparent. This being had black skin, seven horns, clawed limbs like a dracon, bat-like wings extending from its back, and fangs as sharp as a dragon. Taller than most dracons, the being was not living. It was another of the undead. Unlike the skeletons who infested these catacombs, this being was not a mindless beast, nor was it from this plane of existence. Stepping near to the corpse of the mage-monster's remains, a black tentacle extended from the body of the strange visitor, its sharpened top piercing the skull of the mage.

Within a few moments, a strange mass of energy emerged from the dark creature, injecting the severed head with an unnatural power. Looking down at the head, the otherworldly being made eye contact with the head, and the head returned the glance! It was not alive, but the mage-monster's head was reanimated!

"Who... who are you? What is? What happened?!"

The dark figure looked down at the undead head. Through its eyes, more details about the dark figure emerged. The strange being looked very much like the one lying dead on the ground, but if anything, it was far more dangerous. Like the demon the mage had turned into, this creature had a long tail with a stinger, and a physiology that was clearly a Dracon, yet it was a Dracon with so much more attached to it. It was a creature which had one foot in this world, and the other foot in places unknown.

"Be at peace, mortal. I have brought you back from beyond to serve me. What you could not accomplish in life, I shall see you gain in death. The magics you called on were not of this world; they were of mine. When you called out to me, I noticed. When you tapped into the magic that was my own, I felt it. You were wise to have recovered and studied my old texts, yet you were foolish enough to be killed anyway. I witnessed the whole thing, mage. I saw how you stumbled upon my old texts. I watched you from the moment you opened my tomes, and set your claws upon my life's work. It gave me great joy to see someone able to use my magic, for only one who was of my mindset would even be able to read the pages of my books."

"Master?! You- you have returned! Are you here to take your place as emperor?"

"I? Not I. What you see is but an avatar of the true master. I am him, but he is far more than I. He sent me here to find you. Although you are gone, your life's work has not been in vain. Look at you, look at the body you have left behind. Even in death, it is magnificent. You had reached a level of power that our race dreams of; the next stage in Dracon evolution. All those years spent researching, five decades of work... and you didn't keep your intellect intact. The results were predictable. Even the perfect body can be let down by a dull mind. Still, you have done well."

"Does this mean you will give me a second chance?! I wish nothing more than to serve the master! Oh, let me serve him, please!"

"You shall get your chance. Thanks to you, we shall know everything there is to know about the perfect form. First, we shall reattach your head to your body-"

"Yes! YESS!!!"

"- and cut you apart, piece by piece."

"... WHAT?!"

"The master wishes to learn how his work turned out. All the spells you cast served his goals; you unwittingly made yourself into a test subject for him. A guinea pig. An experiment. It is only natural that the one who made the spells should want to learn the results. I promise you this: your sacrifice will not be in vain, and the master will learn much by examining your every organ. Don't worry about your soul; where that is going, countless followers of the master are there already. As for why we are putting your head back on, well, we need to see how you react to each of your limbs being severed, and you cannot feel what you are not connected to. It really is work of anatomical art."

"NO! This isn't what I wanted! It isn't fair! The power is mine! All mine, you hear! I earned it!" The dark figure cast a spell over the limp body of the mage-monster, surrounding it in an aura of darkness, and pulling it into the portal. The still-screaming head was pulled in as well, to go off to its final fate as a living lesson in biology, or at least, a re-animated one.

"This isn't what the master promised! You can't do this! You ca-!" The monster and the dark being were gone, and no sooner had they left did the portal shrink and snap shut. No sign of the monster was left, save for some dried bloodstains and a few loose scales. The mage had received the reward for dealing with a demon.

The outsiders have left the catacombs the same way they came, and where nearly blinded by the sun.

"There's still daylight," Shiana said as she shielded her eyes so that she could adjust.

Storm Paw, however, inhaled a deep breath of fresh air in satisfaction.  "It's always good to have sunlight," he said in Sylvan.

"That wasn't a long trip at all," Halo added, dusting himself off.

"We should head back to the guild. I believe the other elders will want to hear of our success." Silverfang told the rest. As he turned to walk back, the mage noticed that something was wrong.

"Ophion? Ophion, are you okay?" The one in question was sitting on the ground, looking disturbed.

"I... don't know. I sensed something. It wasn't the monster we killed, nor was it more of those skeletons. It's like... imagine if everything you've ever cared about were to disappear. For a moment, I felt that, even though I knew such a sensation was created by dark magics. It only lasted for an instant, but it made me think. Something truly dark entered our world, if but for a few moments, then left. I don't know what that was, or what it means, but if we ever have to face it..."

"Alima, Cassia! Have you found the metals I need?" Torvin called out.

His tools were laid out and his forge was roaring at full power.

"I've got the Stygium, Mithril, Carborundum, and Darksteel! Alima's got-!" Cassia was cut off as a little kobold carrying several ingots of orichalc which were almost as large as she was stepped into the room. It was too much for her as she swayed back and forth under the weight of the rare metal.

"Somebody HELP!!" She cried out, even as a part of her appreciated the comedy of the situation.

Torvin ran up to Alima and took some of the bars from her. "Thanks," he said. The Orichalc was a brilliant red metal that seemed to glow.

He then carried the ingots over to the forge. His Strutho was also present.

"All right. I believe a metal tube of this size will require about 500 grams of eka-adamantium," the Strutho said.

"We've got the supplies. Formula?" Torvin asked.

"50 percent Darksteel, 35 percent Carborundum, 10 percent Mithril and 5 percent Orichalc. All by weight," the Strutho said.

Cassia set down the metals she was holding. "Here you are, Torv. I sure hope this works. Amazing how things just seem to spiral out of control. Hmm. I hope this doesn't end with us having to fight a legion of undead while the house is burning, with one of us dying and the other swearing an oath of revenge by the blood of the fallen."

"That would be SO cool! I mean... let's hope it doesn't come to that." The high-pitched voice was that of Alima, the little kobold. Everyone just stared at her. For a moment, it was easy to forget that she was an expecting mother. "Uh... I'll just leave the room now. I'm- um... going to lie down for a little while, away from danger..."

Torvin nodded and weighed out 250 grams of Darksteel, which he carefully placed in a cold crucible. He stuck that into the raging furnace with his bare hands without any problem.

"Wait, you're immune to fire?" a silver scaled Dracon assistant asked. He was hammering out a plain steel sword.

Torvin shook his head. "As a - admittedly bad - fire mage; I can resist extreme temperatures for roughly 7 minutes. Any longer, and I can be seriously burned. I am, however, immune to my own fire and the fire in my forge is my fire," he replied.

The outsiders looked at each other, confused.

"That couldn't have happened after the fact with what we were facing back in the catacombs," Shiana said.  "Could it?"

"It was. I cannot explain it, but something terrible has happened. I can't say much for sure, but whatever happened will have to be dealt with at a later time." Ophion had some suspicions about the dark presence, but they were far too dark to be taken seriously at the moment. Could the Dark Master have returned? It was true that there were many such "Dark Masters" among the dracons. It seemed that every crackpot evil mage and petty tyrant was calling himself that... but then, there was THE Dark Master, a being of myth and legend, whose origins were tied into those of the dracons themselves.

It would be best not to bring it up without solid proof, though. A really bad feeling was no match for reasoning and tangible evidence.

Torvin weighed out 175 grams of Carborundum.

He grabbed the crucible, now glowing red hot out of the fire and filled with the liquid Darksteel, now incandescent from the heat. He carefully added the Carborundum nuggets in to avoid splashing. Even if he was resistant to high temperatures, getting splashed with molten metal was something Torvin wanted to avoid.

He then slid the crucible back into the forge and waited.

"Torvin! The Stygium! You'll need a special magic potion to pour into the crucible so it doesn't burst into flame," the Struth said, sticking his head through the window into Torvin's workshop.

"Cassia, Alima can one of you get the blue amphora sitting in the storeroom? It says "Stygium shielding potion" on it," Torvin said,

"I'll go get it!" Cassia told Tovin as she reached over for the blue Amphora, which was a kind of pot. That style wasn't native to these lands, as it was a human design. She didn't know much about the people who made them, other than their skill with making marble temples, and really good drama.

"Is this is, Torv?" Cassia held the amphora in both hands, being careful not to drop it. For a liquid container, it was surprisingly heavy.

Torvin turned his head. "Yep, thanks!" he said. "I'm just waiting for the Carborundum to melt into the Darksteel," he added.

The intense heat from the forge did not bother Torvin at all, being that it was his fire.

Time went on, and eventually, the tube was completed, or at least the work had been finished for the day, only Torvin knew which one it was. It had been many hours, but by the time Torvin had finished, Cassia and Alima had already fallen asleep, the equine on the couch, and the kobold on a straw mat, curled up into a little ball. The sounds of the forge had gone on for much longer than either had anticipated, and when it was all over, Cassia gradually awoke, partially refreshed from her nap.

"So, Torv, are you finished? Is it what you expected?" She hoped that the necromancer would meet his fate at the hands of it.

Torvin nodded and held up the tube. "I managed to cast the alloy into a tube. All I have to do is coat the inside with molten Stygium" he said.

The Strutho stuck his head through the window of the workshop. "Torvin, I'll watch the Stygium for you," he said.

Torvin walked out of the workshop and washed up.

Cassia joined Torvin as he was cleaning up. She finally had a chance to talk to him, and have him say something other than "fetch me this" or "move that." Approaching him from behind, she put her arms around his shoulders, feeling his fur and strong muscles. She hoped he wouldn't mind her attention after so many hours spent working over a hot fire; most males wouldn't mind that after so much hard work.

"So, Torv... what do you like to do to relax after a long day in the forge?"

Torvin shrugged. "I like to soak in the nearby hot springs," he said, hanging up his apron.

"Are you going to do that later? Mind if I join you?" Cassia asked him, delighted that there were hot spring nearby.
