The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

That's gen3...the one of horror!
And when it wasn't horror, it was BORING! One whole short was spent on nothing happening! I tried watching that one where they threw a surprise birthday party for Pinkie, and I felt like this by the time it was over:

I actually like My Little Pony Tales.

Gen 3 was like eating a packet of Splenda, so sweet it tastes bad.

-------------------

On a side note, few people seem to address the fact that the The Conversion Bureau (original and a good deal of the spin-offs) either openly or subtly advocate genocide; indeed, a detractor called it "genocide porn". Not to mention the ponies and Celestia are portrayed as heroes and saviors despite actually being complete and utter f---wads.

Those reasons above sum up why I absolutely hate that 'verse. And I have a very low opinion of Chatoyance, one of the most famous TCB spinoff fic writers. And I am puzzling how the original got on EQD, because frankly, the writing sucked. For starters, the Mane Six got derailes into hardcore xenophobes.

^You really don't know what you're talking about.  Invision limits the filesize and total files that are able to be uploaded to the board itself.  LOL.  None of the pictures posted here were "uploaded" to Invision so those rules don't apply.  They're just trying to prevent overload of their server on THEIR end.  And besides, most of these pictures are tiny in filesize.  Even if they were uploaded to Invison, it wouldn't surpass any limits.

Oh, and those TOU don't mention posting images and spamming for a very good reason.  The limit is set to keep Invison's server costs down.  Image posting does NOT equate to spamming.  Spamming would be posting images relating to buying crap or Viagra or affiliate links.  Or posting HUGE images in the hopes of crashing people's browsers.  That may be what's happening to you, but these images are tiny and very manageable.  They might crash 1/10,000 browsers and it wouldn't be because they're too large.  You've got a problem with your computer Champion.  Either fix it or stop complaining about it.

This is a tiny image:

I didn't post it to piss you off.  It should already be in your browser's cache so it shouldn't slow down your loading of the page at all.  But the image is less than 110kb.  Even on dial-up that image would load in 2-3 seconds.  I'm going through a splitter right now so my speeds are TERRIBLE at only 1Mbps and I can load this whole page in under 5 seconds.  On my regular computer I can load the page in only 1-2 seconds.  You've got a problem with your computer and it's your job to fix it.  Everyone else isn't going to adapt to your problems.

Campion1, this is your only warning from me.  You don't stop, you will be reported to the mods to be properly dealt with.  Understand?

Now, onto the other matter I have.  Some time ago I had a little talk with DH.  She knows of my problem with wanting to tell my parents about me liking the show.  So, anyone have any tips as to how to tell them and help them understand?

This is rather difficult for me. -_-

I had to check this topic out as there are apparently threats being made.

I'll say a couple of things:

Landbeforetimelover is right, it applies to pictures uploaded to invisionfree.

Yes, that is a tiny image lbtlover, but the person posting right after you does exactly show what campion is talking about. Excessive nonsense.

I won't say that I know much about my little pony, but there is no need to hate each other for liking or disliking different generations. We do not hate people who only like the first lbt movie, right?

Now if any hatred or threatening (john I'm refering to you here) continues, I will close this topic down despite the love it gets. We cannot monitor this topic, so please keep yourself to the rules or I (or another admin) will be taking action.

Thank you.

Not sure if it would help, but, way way way back in the 90's, when even dial up was slower then dial up nowadays, to speed up web surfing I had my browser, I think in the options area, not automatically load images.  It would just load text only.  A bit annoying having to right click on the image placeholder to have it load an image I wanted to see but I could see the text very quickly and decide if I wanted it to load an image or not.

Other options are to agree to only post images up to a certain size and either provide a link where the image is with a description of the image, or, not sure if it's possible here, some web sites have an thumbnail that you can click on to see the full size image or it can take you to the site where the full image is, and you can load that as a tab.

Well that image is rather large.  But like I've pointed out before, most people don't know how to check an image's size.  We could make it a rule to just post a link when it's a bigger image, but I doubt it would do any good.  You've got my support, but I would have linked to the image with a warning anyways, regardless if Champion was complaining or not.  But I'm a computer guy.  You can't expect the same conduct from regular people.  That's why limits are put up by software to give you a warning when you're trying to upload something excessively large.  Unfortunately there's no way to implement this on GOF.

General consensus is that the original sucks. Opinion is divided on the spinoffs. I personally find most of them as bad as the original.

I think we're getting off-topic here.

I love Tales too by the way.
It's not off-topic. We want to get something settled for this topic.

And what exactly did Campion1 do to warrant a warning? From what I read in his last couple posts in this thread, his main concern was the excessive use of large pictures in this thread that causes slowdowns with anyone who doesn't have or can't afford a fast connection. This is a more legitimate concern and I don't see why him stating that something should be done about it makes him deserve a warning.

Yes, he could compromise and get an image blocker. I linked him to one myself, for Firefox.

But then, the people in this thread can also compromise.

It's just as painless to post links rather than pictures as it is for Campion1 to install an image blocker.

I haven't been in this topic as much because it seems the vast majority of it is less character/episode/show discussion and more posting up many random pictures and fanart. I don't mind if it's done once in a while, but it seems like it's become the bulk of the topic (at least from what I've seen; I could be mistaken).

So anyway, yeah. Both sides can compromise. People with slow connections can get image blockers if it's too much trouble for them, or even avoid the topic if they aren't a fan of it anyway. And the people in the topic who are posting so many pictures can post links instead. Both require so little effort.

My question is this:

Campion1, why can't you get an image blocker if large pictures cause your browser to freeze? And the people active in this topic, why can't you all post links instead of pictures? Are these two tasks (image blocker and link posting) really that difficult to perform?

I hope I didn't offend anyone. This is just my two cents on the issue.

Campion1 is intentionally stirring up trouble because he can. That's why. Remember when he trolled us by joining those hate groups on devART? Exactly. He hates this show, and he would like nothing more than to spoil our fun.
