LBT Fanfiction / A Step too far

Quote
I just entirely forgot about this fic during my FF.net crossposting. Shame on me.

Many knew that his stubborn pride would get him into trouble one day. He knew that at times his temper made him say things he shouldn't. But no one thought that something like this could even happen.

Tria had always been a patient Dinosaur, especially by Threehorn-standards. She was the complete opposite of her mate in that regard. But even she had her limits, though even she would admit that they were few and hard to reach.

And only her husband could go far enough to reach them.

The night had begun like any other, until furious shouting woke the very Valley. It was Tria's voice.

Later no one would be able to tell exactly what had happened to push her over the edge, but that very same night Tria left Mr. Threehorn... and the Valley.

Grandma tried to stop her, reasoning that at least she should wait until she could go with a Farwalker-herd – and barring that, at least wait until the Bright Circle had risen in the sky.

It was the first time Littlefoot saw one of his grandparents truly hurt, the old Longneck-female nursing a deep cut on her front-leg. Tria had attacked her, charging the old female as she tried to block her way.

It was unbelievable, but the wound on her leg and the scent of blood lingering around Littlefoot's grandmother was indisputable proof.

Come the rising of the Bright Circle, Grandpa demanded an explanation of the Threehorn-male, for the first time openly furious and even hostile towards the other.

Perhaps the Valley would have seen another side of him if his mate had not been there, interfering and calming him before a temper none even knew he possessed exploded.

Cera and Littlefoot felt awkward around each other for quite a while after this, the Longneck slow to forgive his grandmother's hurt. It had nearly cost her life when the wound grew infected and the old female suffering from high fevers for many days afterwards.

Mr. Threehorn made a wise and wide berth around the Longnecks for several changes of the Night Circle, the accusing glares of Grandpa burning him far more than he'd ever admit.

Tricia suffered for far longer, not comprehending why her mother had just disappeared and left her behind.

They assumed Tria dead: a lone Threehorn at night in the Mysterious Beyond was not something that inspired trust in survival...

Then, many Cold Times later, when the Gang was close to entering the Time of Great Growing, a lone Threehorn came into the Valley.

He had come from a Threehorn-Farwalker-herd. One of their members was close to dying and knowing that the Valley was still within reach, their Leader had send him with the question if could stay in there until said member had died peacefully of old age instead of by Sharpteeth-claw.

Of course they could, the residents told him. Though they did pose the request that she stay somewhere where the hatchlings were less likely to run into her.

He'd deliver the message and expressed his gratitude. She was his mother, he told them, and despite not even being the oldest of the herd, the loss of his father to Sharpteeth was now pushing her over the edge, as it were.

First part

“Still, thank you for keeping him alive for me.” The strange creatures had left, leaving the Great Valley with the inhabitants it had before they had ever become involved and then some. Currently, Grandpa was sleeping, his long-time lack of sustenance having caught up to him.  Resting beside him were his wife and her cousin while his son-in-law was watching the reunion of his grandson with said grandson’s friends.
“It was my pleasure.” The Old one smiled gently at her family-member. “I am just happy it did not prove a hollow effort.”
“Nowhere near how happy I am.” Grandma returned the smile warmly. “I am going to be completely on his case on eating once he wakes up, though.” Her smile turned into a frown when looking over the starved form of her husband.
“I’ll be happy to help until my herd returns.” The scarred female chuckled softly. “I send them ahead, they’ll pick me up on their next visit. I felt it might get problematic to accommodate two entire herds of Longnecks for too long.”
“Seeing if you can retire soon?” Grandma chuckled, looking over the valley.
“Don’t tempt me.”
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
“Nono...” Pterano scooped one of his nieces away from him. “I am only going to tell stories when one of the others is around. You are not going to believe me otherwise.”
“They would, to be honest.” His sister pointed out, standing a bit away.
“True.” He chuckled. “Very well, let me rephrase that; I need backup so your mother does not get on my case about it.” That unleashed giggles from said sister’s menagerie of kids. He did flinch a bit at her flat glare. “I am just trying to preempt misunderstandings here.”
Saphira did snort after a bit, resting one hand on his shoulder. “I’ll trust you.”
“I still want someone really trusted as back-up.” He laughed softly. “Trust me on that, sister. Some of those things are going to make you contemplate giving me another five Cold-time time-out if I alone claim them.”
“And you’d rather not.” She shooed her children away, suggesting they get some food for their uncle.
“Should I be concerned you removed any and all witnesses?” He watched the small flock of children disappear out of sight. Only to find that if there was anything she didn’t want her children to see, it was her frantically hugging her sibling. “Saphira.”
“Don’t you dare pull something like this again.”
Turning in her embrace, he returned it gently. “To be fair, I didn’t want or plan this at all. But hey, look at the bright side; if this doesn’t get Threehorn to say I suffered enough, I don’t know what will.”
The glare she gave him pretty clearly told him he had ruined the emotional moment.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Evening brought something of a conundrum to the Swimmer-family whose mother and adopted brother had returned from wherever they had disappeared too; everyone wanted to sleep with them. What this translated to was that while Olophon was content to just be near his wife and returned child, the young swimmers all wanted to be able to touch both at once.
“It’s been a while since we had such a problem settling in.” Hadria looked over the proverbial traffic-jam between her and Spike. On her other side, Olophon was looking over her back at the same thing.
“To be fair, as far as I know none of our children usually have such specific demands to go to sleep.” One of his hands was resting on her neck as he spoke. “Usually they just form a pile with no regards to ‘want to touch mother, want to touch brother’.”
The elder female chuckled at that, looking briefly at him with sparkling eyes. “If they don’t solve this fast, there won’t be a night to sleep through.”
“Mhm...” He could certainly agree with that, the night circle already having crested the mountaintops to the east. Shifting, he leaned over his mate. “Kids, if you don’t figure this out soon, I’m taking your mom on a date this night already instead of waiting for a couple days.”
She laughed at that, her children looking beyond horrified at their father at that statement. The last time she and Olophon had had a date, it had taken the entire night, meaning there’d be no way they could sleep with her that night.
It did prompt them to finally figure something out, at least. Spike would sleep surrounded by his siblings, while Hadria would curl around them with Olophon just resting beside her.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
“So… we are just living here now?” Tyra mused, looking at her mate. The Sharptooth-family had retreated to the corner of the valley the elder male had claimed as his own since having arrived here.
“At this point, I suppose we might as well.” He was circling her, drinking in all the changes that had happened to her body since he last saw her. Chomper was nearby, hunting some bugs for his dinner. “It keeps competition down.”
“From what I gathered, isn’t that something the Threehorn would vehemently oppose?” She rolled over briefly, stretching languidly.
“Grandpa Longneck convinced him.” Chomper spoke up, running up to his parents to settle down beside his mother with a filled stomach. “I think it helped dad was already inside.”
The older male grunted in agreement, settling down as well. She did notice that his eyes were still mapping out the shining lines that covered her body. She knew him well enough to know it would take him a while to calm down about those.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
The Threehorns were already asleep at this point, Cera curled around her half-sister who was sleeping in the crook of their father’s body. Tria was resting a short distance away.
Unlike her family, she was not asleep, instead looking at them with a frown on her face.

Warning: This story contains humanity & SciFi

"Oh Topsy…" Tria sighed in exasperation with a faint hint of amusement in her voice. Pterano had returned from his exile a few days back and Mr. Threehorn was reacting to that as expected. Which meant that only the most tolerable residents did not feel the urge to bash his head against something yet and even those were getting close.

Tria rolled her eyes as her mate huffed and turned to go to some quiet corner of the valley. She watched him go and decided to go down to one of the water-holes. Above her a dark-brown silhouette was aiming for the bigger hole, gliding down gracefully. She looked over her shoulder to where her mate had disappeared, before heading there herself.

"Old Threehorn still not happy?" Grandma Longneck greeted the arrival. She, Ducky's mother and Pterano were resting at the water's edge, watching the young ones play in the shallows.

"What do you think?" Tria snorted lightly, settling down between the Longneck and the Flyer. She smiled warmly when seeing her daughter use her big sister as a small island, climbing up and jumping down in the same move. Cera looked less happy, but had resigned herself to her fate.

"I served my sentence." Pterano grumbled, frowning as he stared at the ground.

"He'll accept you, sooner or later." Ducky's mother assured him, not adding the obvious: he'd have to, because patience in the valley was running thin.

"Grandpa is considering talking to him about it already." Grandma added, rolling her eyes in exasperation towards the Threehorn.

"Let's hope that'll do the trick." Pterano whispered, wrapping his arms around him. "I really do not want to have to go back to the Mysterious Beyond."

"It won't come that far." The Swimmer soothed him. "We'll make sure of it."

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

"So, let me get this straight…" The man growled softly, hoping that none of the dinosaurs would hear him. "They send you through Time to capture dinosaurs and you never bothered to actually look up something about those? What the crap were you doing that month you had before this job?"

"Is na ma problem." The one he had spoken to answered. "A gets paid ta bring some lizards, na ta study them. That's tha job of ya fancy scientists."

"Moron." The other looked ready to hit him. "What about you others?" He hissed. "Please tell me at least someone here beside me knows what we're dealing with?"

The other three who had discreetly spread out over the cave they had taken shelter in looked at him. Two looked slightly sheepish, but the other nodded. That was the downside if something was one big experiment where failure meant dead: they weren't going to send un-expendables. But that they'd give him these morons, he really was going to complain about.

"Well, that's better than no one." He felt a migraine coming up and rubbed his forehead. "Ok, I'm going to make this short then: the ones with a long neck are Sauropods, the horned ones Triceratops – I hope you know THAT at least, if you ever watched a dinosaur-movie – the winged ones Pterosaurs and any others I'll mention should we encounter them. Got that?"

All four others nodded.

"Good." He rose to his feet, looking out of the cave as he straightened his vest. He needed several different species – didn't matter which – but he knew from animals from his own time that he had only one shot, otherwise every wild animal in quite a radius would either flee or at the very least be on their guard. He didn't want to think about a Triceratops or the like being on guard and spotting him. "Let's get this ball rolling, I need a drink."

They followed him outside, sneaking through the forest in search for lone dinosaurs.

"Sir, what about those?" The one who had nodded pointed down the hillside. Through the forest one could make out one of the lakes that dotted the valley-floor and had made this such a good spot for the first try to capture some of the ancient lizards which had ruled earth before a giant meteorite changed history. At least, aside from the fact this entire area would in a few dozen million years be all field of the main Laboratory of the government. That was the downside with time-travel: you could only travel to the very spot you left from, even when going back billions of years.

The leader looked where he pointed and saw several different dinosaurs resting in the warm sun. There were four different adults and about 20 children. He crouched down, looking them over. The Sauropod looked old even to his eyes – which meant it was probably ancient – but the other three seemed to be at the prime of their lives. The problem was that most of the children were in the lake-water, seemingly playing in it. Their arsenal did not include ways to capture those safely aside from grabbing them physically. But it was probably the best opportunity they'd get.

"Alright, this is what we're gonna do." He crouched down. "You think you can hit that Pterosaur with a stun-net?"

The man he had turned to looked at the pterosaur, measuring the distance, before nodding. "Easily, unless it's gonna fly."

"At my signal only." He turned to the other three. "Alright, you…" He pointed at the man that had frustrated him so just a few moments back. "hit the Triceratops. You and I will hit the Sauropod and you the last one, got all that?"

They nodded and quietly prepared their weapons, all the while on the lookout for dinosaurs that might come upon them and alert the others.

"The moment we've fired, we gotta run. Try if you can get some of those kids before they completely scatter. I think 'ma fancy scientists' would like some youngsters with the adults." He reminded them, aiming the barrel of his rifle at the Sauropod. He hoped the old thing would survive this. He'd hate to have wasted a shot. From the corner of his eyes he saw the others take aim too. "3… 2… 1… fire." He hated raising his voice, even for something as fitting as giving the order to shoot. In fact, that single word 'fire' was the softest he had spoken while on this trip.

Imma put links for the five stories in that universe in this thread. I'll also plop in any one/two-shots I might write at a later time.

The linked stories are put down in Chronological order. It is advised to read the three main stories before the two prequels to minimize confusion. The one/twoshots in this thread are not chronological, but I will mention where they fall if it isn't obvious from the text itself.

Grief of the Father

The story of how Chomper's dad lost his first family.

Time of Change

The story of how Chomper's parents became a couple.

Greatest Sacrafice

The story of how Chomper's parents became friends of the Valley.

Rage of the Sharpteeth

The story of how Threehorn nearly ruined everything

Vengeance of Love

The story where a thing burns down

General Land Before Time / Why the cast doesnt grow up
« on: October 05, 2019, 03:19:25 PM »
Bit of a cracky topic (since this IS a kids movie/tv-series), but I wanted to hear your guys' opinions  about a biological take on the good old 'never-growing up'-thing. (I will make the first person who just goes 'they want money' as next victim in my fanfics, jsyk)

I got this thought after watching a dinosaur documentary. Talking about Argentinosaurus, they mentioned that at top-growthtime they (as far as can be determined from skeletons, of course) grew 40 kg PER DAY (I dun want to know how much they have to eat for that :olittlefoot ). Now I admit Argentinosaurus seriously outsizes the Gang, but the principle remains the same.

Especially Littlefoot, Cera and Spike at some point in their lives need to add on kilograms per day and eat correspondingly to reach adultsize... What if the Gang isn't growing up because they are so busy with adventuring etc. that they don't eat enough? Essentially being malnourished  :opetrie

LBT Fanfiction / Courtship of Ages Past
« on: September 18, 2019, 02:08:12 PM »
Author's Note: This is part one of an series, covering the transition from Single to Committed for our beloved Characters.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

Many cold times had passed. Each of the five had grown, being many times the size they had been in their younger days: Littlefoot was now three quarters of his grandfather's size and didn't seem like he'd stop growing any time soon. His skin-colors had darkened, making him look more like his father than ever.

Cera too had grown and was now about Tria's size. Several cold times ago her main horns had broken through, a thing which she had been waiting for impatiently. She still had the same colors as during her childhood, but anyone who made fun of that found himself with a face full of enraged Threehorn (with all three horns, as she'd love to point out).

Ducky had grown darker and larger over time, now looking like her mother while still being smaller, the top of her crest only reaching the lower part of her mother's bill. Her customary 'yep yep yep' had changed in a series of calls through said crest, something which amused and irritated her friends to no end. But they had gotten used to it and by now it was as much a part of her as her 'yep yep yep' had ever been.

Petrie had lost his way of speaking somewhere along the way, now only speaking like that when he felt very strongly about something. When his uncle Pterano had returned after his five winter-exile, everyone had been very amused that by that time the young flyer already looked like he was a smaller, darker-colored twin of the old flyer. The similarities had only increased as time progressed.

Spike still didn't speak much and his main priority was still his next dinner. Considering he too was nearly the size of a grown-up this lead to many amusing situations. His plates and spikes had come through only a winter after Cera's horns (for which he was silently grateful, since he preferred not to see the Threehorn angry at him for being faster in that regard).

Chomper had grown too, causing him to leave the Great Valley. He could no longer sustain himself on buzzing creatures and even fish had soon proven to be not enough for the ever-growing hunger of the Sharptooth. He had left soon thereafter to ensure he would not accidently hurt his friends or worse, harm a Valley-resident. Ruby had followed him, returning to her family. It had been a long time since the two had been seen by their other friends.

All five had only recently returned to the Valley with their families, each returning from Courtship-Day, which was essentially a meet-and-greet for young dinosaurs to meet potential mates and grown-ups to see distant relatives.

They had met up on the very hill they had huddled together after first finding the Great Valley so many cold times ago, their mates at their sides. Littlefoot had Ali resting at his side, which his friends proclaimed was a match they had seen coming cold times ago.

Cera's mate was a bulky Threehorn, whose dark-brown color reminded Littlefoot of earth. His horns were already fully-grown and his eyes were the color of sand. The lighter colors of his underside went only as far as his neck, but his darker back-stripe was flanked by two smaller stripes of the same color as his stomach. He introduced himself as Trike and seemed well underway to prove himself a much calmer dinosaur than Cera.

Ducky's mate was a Swimmer named Paro, who seemed to be a male version of Ducky. Cera jokingly asked whether the Swimmer was sure she had not accidently chosen one of her brothers as a mate. Ducky answered her with a lot of giggles, assuring the Threehorn she had already checked whether he was related to her. The following laughter echoed across the grassy plains of the valley, reaching the grown-ups who could not help but smile at the antics of their young ones, regardless of said young ones' age.

Rana, the dark-red flyer that had followed Petrie to the Valley, dryly commented that he had not exaggerated when calling his friends 'interesting'. Her eyes sparkled with amusement as she nuzzled him. His blush at that move nearly matched her wings.

To his friends' surprise Spike had found a suitable match too. The dark-blue female Spiketail introduced herself as Tega and mentioned that they had found one another over dinner. That made much more sense to the others than the thought that Spike had actually courted her. Tega simply responded that he had courted her… by taking her out to dinner.

"So Littlefoot, how does courting go for Longnecks?" Cera asked after a while of meaningless chatter. "I doubt it's the same as that for Threehorn's…"

"Oh, let's share experiences!" Ducky exclaimed. "It'll be fun!" The deep sound of a Swimmer-crest-call echoed in the cooling evening-air.

"Uh…" Littlefoot looked to his right, where Ali nodded with a big smile on her face. "Ok then. Well, I and my Grandparents left before any of you did, since the Longneck meeting-place is further away from here than those of your kinds. Underway I started talking to Grandpa…"

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

Sometimes, life itself can surprise you. Even after a betrayal that wasn't one, it returned to normal. Chomper was slow to return to the side of his friends, and they were slow to fully accept him again, but the tight-knit group stayed together, even as Chomper grew to threatening sizes. The rest of the youngsters grew too, Littlefoot being the size of a moderate Threehorn by now for example.

Pterano returned after the five Cold Times he had been banished were over, being none too sure what to think about the newest herd-members. A playful threat by Threehorn himself about what might happen should he not be happy broke the ice between the Flyer and the Sharpteeth.

It still took a while for things to smooth over between the residents of the Valley and the Sharpteeth, much longer than it did for the youngsters, but even that soon returned to normal. Well, as much as a friendship between prey and predator can be considered normal, of course.

Tyra became a regular visitor, spending almost more time inside the Valley than outside it. The first time she did however, resulted in a battle between her and Grandma Longneck.

Rec watched from the sidelines as the barely healed Longneck met the furious Sharptooth in battle. Grandpa joined him soon after hearing that his wife was battling a Sharptooth.

Rec had to assure him with several promises that his own wife had no intention of bringing severe harm to his wife and that this was merely a vending of a bout of anger neither could vent at their actual target. He looked uncomfortable around the two grown-up male Longnecks as they watched the two females wreck the field they were on.

Grandpa had the feeling it had something do with what he had said to Grandma to cause her to threaten his very life. But neither Sharptooth, nor Longneck brought that episode up ever again.

The children were taught Sharptooth soon after. It was deemed too unsafe to only have two translators between two groups where a simple misunderstanding could do serious damage. It proved to be quite the challenge, but they got the hang of the basics after a while.

Sometimes Grandma looked ready to start smacking them with her tail when they butchered the language, particularly when the Sharpteeth looked ready to start rolling on the ground with laughter. She never told them what Petrie had said then.

By now it was during the hot season, dinosaurs looking for cool shelter in the shade and plants turning dry in the blistering light of the Great Circle. Even the Sharpteeth were reluctant to leave their cool caves to hunt.

But then the wind carried a worrisome scent to their home. Instinct woke them instantly from their lethargy, driving them up the mountains to get a view of the surrounding lands.

As they arrived at the top, the sky in front of them darkened.

Rec wheeled around turning towards the Great Valley in the distance and roared. The rock trembled with the volume he produced, the sound echoing in the landscape for miles in either direction, though the valley-floor got the full brunt.

He was answered with the voice of the old Longneck-female, her roar much deeper than his, but also far more distance-covering.

Author’s Note: The full version of what Tyra tells Grandma will be posted in this thread after this story finished. Warning, said Side-story might be a bit… nasty at times… I am thinking of just giving a small summary and a link to the particular chapter here, so that people can freely choose whether to read it. What do you think?

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

The Sharpteeth indeed took the surrounding lands for themselves. They did not hunt in the Valley once, though at times one or two of them would enter the valley to visit Chomper and Grandma Longneck. In turn Grandma would take Chomper and the other children to visit them every few months, something which at first was not received gladly by the other parents. But after seeing that the children always returned save and sound and even enjoyed the visits to the Mysterious Beyond they became more accepting. All except for Mr. Threehorn, who did not like the constant travels of his daughters to the Sharpteeth.

“He has a terrible history with your kind.” Tyra had visited the Longneck and her son in the Valley. None of the other Leafeaters knew that Chomper was not necessary as a translator since the Longneck was fluent in Sharptooth herself, but they liked to keep up appearances that he was needed. So it had come to be that Tyra and Grandma, in search for privacy had wandered out into the Mysterious Beyond again, leaving Chomper with his friends and strict orders not to tell anyone.

“Yet I think this is just ridiculous.” Tyra growled. “With all due respect, he should have gotten more accepting since we came here Cold Times ago, yet he still acts as if we are just a chomp away from eating his daughter.“

“He is protective of her. She is all he has left of his wife.”
Grandma told her. “She died together with all of Cera’s Nest-mates, killed by Sharpteeth just outside these valley-walls. He does not wish to risk his last daughter with her.”

“That does not mean he needs to snarl at any ëgood’ Sharptooth that comes near her.”
Tyra countered, setting her foot down with more force than was strictly necessary. “Rec has a terrible hate for Threehorns and Club-tails, but do you see him growling at every individual that passes by?”

Grandma blinked in surprise. ”You never told me something like that. Why is that?”

Tyra stopped walking briefly, looking away in sadness. Grandma Longneck was surprised to see a tear run down her cheek. “I have the feeling Rec and Mr. Threehorn are more alike than they think. It is a long story, perhaps we ought to find a comfortable place to rest before I start telling you.”

The Longneck nodded, following as the Sharptooth led her to a secluded patch of green among the mountains.

“You don’t have to tell me.”  She told the other as they settled on the grass covering the floor.

“It is not my grief that pains me.” Tyra looked at her. “It is Rec’s grief. Did you never wonder why Tyra does not look like either him or me? She looks like her mother, her real mother. She is not my child.”

“She is not?”
The Flattooth was surprised to say the least. Then Tyra explained to her how it came to be that White Star called someone else her mother. The other was horrified after the tale was finished.

Rec had been mated with another female, a friend of Tyra’s, and their first nest had been their last. While he had been hunting, a pair of Threehorns and a Clubtail had come upon the nest and crushed the eggs in it. His first mate had sought to avenge her children, but she had been killed. Rec had gone into a rage, hunting those responsible, while Tyra who had had the territory next to theirs had stayed behind. She by accident had found the sole egg which had survived the attack. She was not sure what had happened exactly, but she guessed the Leaf-eaters had kicked it out of the nest while trampling her siblings and not noticed it.

The child in the nest hatched and called her mother. It was almost a Cold Time later that Rec returned, victorious. They decided, even without love between them, to raise the child together and name her White Star in honor of her fallen mother. White Star herself knew this story, but she had never held it against her parents.

“What happened then?” Grandma asked softly.

“Many years we raised her as friends. It was only shortly after she left when reaching adulthood that we became romantically involved.” Tyra looked up the where the sky was just visible between all the Sky Puffies floating overhead.

“A tale almost worthy of Threehorn.” The Longneck agreed to the Sharptooth’s earlier assessment while rising to her feet. “Perhaps they are more alike than they think.”

“I just hope that does not end up being a clashing-point.”
Tyra walked out of the grass into the stone paths leading through the mountains. She looked at the Longneck walking beside her. The scars of what had happened 3 Cold Times ago remained, but the Flattooth had regained all of her former strength over time. “If they clash, I fear that neither would stop until the other is gone permanently.”

“I agree.”
Grandma nodded slowly, a hint of sadness appearing in her eyes. “Would Rec let it come that far?”

“That depends on how the Threehorn acts.”
Tyra shrugged helplessly. “When he only glares and frowns, there should be no problem, but if he does more, I fear that Rec’s hate towards his kind will make this end in tears.”

“Then we have a problem, because Threehorn is more likely to attack than to back down, as you can imagine.”
Grandma frowned as they reached the Valley-entrance.

“Yay.” Tyra’s sarcasm dripped down of that single word. “Let’s hope it does not come that far.”

The earthshake had been minor, toppling only a few small trees which had quickly been cleaned up. But several of the entrances to the valley were only closed with heaps of rubble, so to ensure their safety, it was decided they should be checked up upon.
That is how Grandma Longneck found herself climbing up the path to the side of the valley where the Bright Circle touched down. She was not alone however: behind her trailed her grandson and one of his friends, the little Sharptooth named Chomper.
“What will we do when it is open?” Littlefoot asked, climbing up the path beside her. Chomper followed the young longneck. He had grown over time, now being nearly the height of Ruby.
“We will warn the others and close it.” She raised her neck, checking whether she could see the entrance already. “But it is unlikely it’ll come that far: the rock above is brittle and the slightest tremor can cause it to collapse.”
“Oh…” Littlefoot looked back into the valley, seeing the long neck of his grandfather in the distance.
“Oh dear…” His grandmother said, looking over some stones on the ground. It were strange stones unlike any he had seen ever before: they had a dark sand-color and there were imprints of shells on them.
“What are those?” Chomper picked one up, studying it.
“These are stones from the ravine we’re checking. If they are this far away it means that at least part of the blockade has collapsed.” The older longneck started walking again, this time a bit faster as before. “Quickly now.”
She gasped when she saw the ravine: the rubble had collapsed completely, while the surrounding rock had not, leaving a small hill even the clumsiest Dinosaur could climb across.
“Chomper, do you smell anything?” She looked down on the small Sharptooth who obediently scanned the air.
“No, nothing.” He said after a while. “But that only means there have been no Sharpteeth lately.”
“I understand. Both of you stay here, I’ll go and check.” Grandma Longneck carefully crossed the rubble, gingerly approaching the other end.
There was no sound, but that did not mean there were no dangers outside. Sharpteeth did not always roar before attacking. She steeled herself, stepping out into the Mysterious Beyond.
She looked around, each of her muscles tensed.
She whipped around at the sound of a hiss, her eyes widening when she saw Fast Biters.
“Children, run!” She called back through the ravine.
“Grandma!” Littlefoot answered her.
“Go, warn the others!” She had no time to check whether they had listened to her as more Fast Biters poured from between the surrounding rocks. She snarled as they started to screech at her, baring their teeth.

The two boys ran as fast as they could down the mountain-side. Littlefoot all too well remembered the tone of voice his grandmother had used; he had heard it before when his mother had saved him and Cera from the Sharptooth which killed her. He did not want to draw any more parallels though: it simply couldn’t happen again.
“Grandpa!” The older longneck turned as he heard the desperate voice of his grandson.
“Littlefoot, what is it?” Grandpa Longneck lowered his head to face the two panting youngsters. He recalled that the two of them had joined Grandma Longneck and he was almost afraid to wonder why she wasn’t with them.
“Ravine open…” The boy panted. “Told us… to run…”
The old one looked up, feeling dread rise in his heart when he realized how far away he was from his mate.
Several other grown-ups joined him while Petrie’s mother flew ahead. Soon enough she returned, just as they were half-way up the mountain-side.
“There are about a dozen Fast Biters. She’s holding her own, but her strength is giving way.” The flyer flew over them, worry in her face. “We’ll have to hurry.”
The longneck’s face hardened as he sped up. He had a terrible feeling they would be too late.
“No!” He screamed as he saw the ravine. On the other side a longneck was balancing on her hind-legs, towering far above any other dinosaur. Her back was to him, but he could recognize her even in the dark: his mate. She turned her head to look at him, weakly smiling and allowed herself to lose her balance. Over 20 tons of massive muscle crashed against the side of the ravine. The Earthshake had not caused the walls to collapse, but the weight of the adult longneck most certainly did.
The last he saw of her was her body on the ground with Fast Biters approaching the unmoving longneck. Then there was only rubble and dust.

Well, somerandomfangirl dragged my ass over here, so here I am  :D

Hi, my name is Sleeping-force's-inside (for those over at FF.net, yes, that's my name there too :3 ). Well ok, my name is Jacqueline, but whatever, this is the internet xD
I'm 21 and I rediscovered LBT at 20 (I liked them when I was younger, but then simply lost interest) and I recently bought the first 11 movies :)

Said 11 movies are also my favorites, since the thirteenth i.m.o just sucked after the first ten minutes orso :x , and the TV-series also failed to deliver what I expected of it (though it had its' nice moments).

As my point-out to FF.net might already imply, I am an avid Fanfiction-writer/reader (though woe the day you were born when you kill off Littlefoot's grandparents!!!   :anger  I hate those fics, but again: isse my opinion, not yours xD). I am still thinking about reposting said Fanfic's here though, since I have the nasty tendency to forget halfway along the way that I am reposting and then they just die on me :(
