Spike lying on his side with a red-rimmed mouth looked really ominous, I've gotta say.

Petrie's tickly tree star fit was kinda funny, and it was amusing that Pterano was the one who passed this whole "friend of a friend" rumor about bad luck to Petrie. Guess he underestimated how jumpy his nephew could be.
This brings me to something I think was an issue across the whole TV series, though: Petrie's characterization. When I was a kid, I never thought any of the LBT movies made Petrie into a one-dimensional scaredy-cat. Watching the TV series at the same age, however, that overwhelmingly was the impression I got from him. They flanderized him beyond his occasional timidness to complete paranoia, having him automatically react to almost everything with fear. I mean, he could be nervous in the movies, but he wasn't superstitious or anything. He even said to Littlefoot in VI, "Me no believe in bad luck!"

Also, the last time the Gang ventured into the Mysterious Beyond, at least their hearts were in the right place, trying to replace that stone for Tria. But now they're only trying to prove something to Cera. And it's not very responsible for Ruby to just say it'll be okay because it's not that far into the Mysterious Beyond. Does it matter how far it is? She and Chomper had a close brush with Red Claw the last time they were there!

Heh, I like how Littlefoot winks at the others before they start the "Adventuring" song. "That's our cue, guys! Time for the obligatory song."

That fire scene is a lot like the one from LBT III.

Petrie's constant reminders that there's bad luck and it's all Spike's fault, getting an I-told-you-so attitude whenever the smallest problem happens, becomes annoying. I don't care for the superstitious, know-it-all version of Petrie we get in this episode. "Petrie BIG scaredy-egg!" Yeah, I noticed.

I'm glad Petrie at least felt bad enough about his attitude towards Spike that he helped him find food, though. Plus, Spike getting his head stuck in that log was funny.

Cera: "Spike, why is your head in a log?"

Petrie: "Because Spike have bad luck. And...because me think there tree stars in log?"

Soon, though, Petrie is back to purely annoying again. It starts to rain--"THIS ALL SPIKE'S FAULT!" The others point out that it rains all the time--"BUT STILL!"

Then Ducky lets it slip that Littlefoot had a ground prickly in his foot, which Petrie quickly declares bad luck, and Littlefoot reacts with, "Thanks, Ducky." Littlefoot using sarcasm--and on Ducky, even?!? That's it, I'm not happy now.

Wait, since when is the Sheltering Grass in the Mysterious Beyond, anyway? It was definitely part of the valley in LBT II, so that's a continuity error.
Stink pools? I bet stinkweed would thrive in those conditions.

Cera's reaction to the jumping water:

Error during the "Good Times, Good Friends" song: Ruby's spots are missing.

It makes sense that bad smells bother Chomper more than the others, with his sharptooth sense of smell. Clever foreshadowing of what's soon to come, too.

"From now, on everybody listen to Petrie! Petrie right!" Petrie was never this bossy in any of the movies...
Spike saving the day with the power of stink was hilarious! I love that battle cry.
Ducky: "Your smell is not so bad, no, no, no." As she and everyone else hold their noses. Real convincing!

To wrap things up, I'm not particularly fond of this episode due to its abundance of annoying/OOC moments as pointed out above. However, it does have some funny moments and good pacing, and Spike even gets some time to shine, so I can't say it's all bad, just not necessarily my cup of tea.

Ooh, it's the infamous "Brave Longneck Scheme."

Well, since the last time the Gang saw Ali, she turned bright purple and developed a hoarse throat.

Ah, there's Rhett! Sure enough, he's your typical jerk/fibber at the start of this, but Ali here already rubs me the wrong way more than Rhett does. Way to backtrack in character development--now she's snubbing the Gang all over again, yelling at Littlefoot, "You're just jealous because you can't knock down trees with YOUR tail!"

But it was clear that Rhett was already doubting that all his fibbing was okay, because he quickly started backpedaling: "That mountain of rocks was, uh, um, mostly built...but I did finish the top."
OOC Ali's actually the one who really shoves the fibs in Littlefoot and Cera's faces: "SEE?? He finished the top!"

Aaaand it's that same tune from the log-running episode, already. Littlefoot trying to look like a sharptooth is pretty amusing, though.

Chomper: "I'd like to see what Rhett would do if a REAL sharptooth came around!" Haha, the fact that everyone but Cera has forgotten that Chomper is a sharptooth--even Chomper--is hilarious!

Aww, look at the little guy's face after Cera says the sharptooth is "right here!" Cuuuute widdle sharptoof!

I like how even when Cera imagines this prank, Chomper isn't able to get any fiercer than just literally saying, "Grr."

There's some shamefully obvious recycled animation when they flash through shots of all the Gang before "Friends for Dinner" begins. Hmm, this version of "Friends for Dinner" sounds like it's been mixed with the "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" song from Lilo & Stitch...just not half as good.

Okay, the scene where the Gang rehearses their prank gets me every time. The first try where they're all giggling and goofy and making funny faces is hilarious! (Not to mention personally relatable for me. Did anyone else try to direct videos featuring a younger sibling when they were growing up?) The best part here is how Chomper is so confused at everyone laughing at first, but then it ends up being contagious, so he giggles anyway. And @Gentle Sharptooth --Petrie, IKR!

Hard to say if Ali yelling in Petrie's voice looks hilarious or terrifying.

Gotta give it to Chomper, he turned out being a really good actor after all!
Hey, there are the Rhett faces that inspired some emojis.

Ali meeting with Chomper was actually very in-character. She was hesitant at first, but she didn't take off, and she came around pretty quickly. Nicely done!

I also loved that line from the Old One to Chomper @Gentle Sharptooth mentioned.

Rhett was pretty ashamed at the ending. He'd learned his lesson, and, he was so grateful that Littlefoot and co. gave him another chance: "Aw, you guys are the BEST!" I think he could have been a pretty good character, had we gotten to see more of him after this turnaround! I'm with @Gentle Sharptooth , Rhett doesn't deserve so much hate.
I know some others disagree, but I thought this episode was quite good! The one thing I don't care for is how Ali acts in the beginning, but that's what, a minute or two of screen time? Not worth getting agitated over IMHO. I can't lie, I really enjoyed this episode the first time I saw it, and it turns out I still do!

@RainbowFaceProtege Thanks!  Your idea sounds like fun! I like to see a LBT platformer done like Donkey Kong Country!  The structure with using one member of the gang for each world reminds me of the Return to the Great Valley for the PS1, though having boss battles and a actual reunion of the gang automatically makes it better. X) (The game on PS1 has no real ending)

@Enchanted-Valley96 Yeah the PS1 games had questionable voice acting.  What the heck is with Petrie being everyone's tutor in those games?

I never had any LBT video games, nor have I ever watched playthroughs of them. But now I want to look up some vids to see just how bad they are!

Cera hopping all over the place and growling with that log on her head was kind of hilarious. The way they had her shadow flailing around right before cutting to the theme song was so weird-looking! Then cut back to the show, and suddenly Cera's calmed down enough to use English.

I love how beautiful the sky looks when Ruby is showing the others her star! @Gentle Sharptooth The nighttime scenes really did have a great atmosphere here!
We actually got a flashback to Chomper and Ruby leaving the Mysterious Beyond, which is really cool! Though I still wish we'd have found out how they actually became friends. Like, when did Chomper leave the island?

Yep, there's Saurus Rock again! Though, just for the sake of a bigger variety of callbacks, it would've been cool if maybe Threehorn Peak showed up...

Guess we'll never know what on Earth Chomper was miming right before Ruby left. Seriously, what was that?

Every flashback Ruby has to her family is really sweet, and it's nice that this episode gave her some development with that. "Remembering" is quite a nice song compared to most in the TV series, too.

It is kind of unfortunate that Mr. Clubtail/Kosh was pretty annoying in this episode. That scene where he burps in Cera's face is really obnoxious. What happened to, "Morning, kids. Nice day for a tree star?"


Moving on, though, the ending where Ruby gets rescued/cheered up by the others is very sweet. This episode was a great friendship story. I felt like Chomper's relationship with Ruby especially shined here, he's like a little brother to her! As for my favorite episode so far...I don't know if I have one yet. Sorry, but I've enjoyed them all! I like the TV show more than I'd remembered!

It is interesting how something like a favorite character can influence your entire perspective in your writing, your preferences in other characters and so forth.

Yep, I can totally relate--it just happened to be a different set of characters in my case. (Guess who?)
