I'm nearsighted also, but I don't think it's too severe. Being the computer for many years is probably what worsened my nearsightedness. Nearsightedness runs in my mom's side, but I think being the computer a lot is making it worse...:p
Oh great... If spending time on the computer exacerbates nearsightedness, then I'm in big trouble...

Despite my poor eyesight, I am very visually oriented (I tend to think in pictures as much or more than I think in words). For this reason, I have always preferred books with illustrations or photographs, and watch a lot of movies and TV shows.

Land Before Time TV Series (2007) / Redclaw' scar
« on: June 25, 2009, 07:24:10 PM »
What I'd really like to know is how Red Claw obtained his titular characteristic. I've wondered if it's possible that when he acquired his scar, some of the blood seeped into the living tissue of his claw, permanently staining it red. (It's slightly disgusting to contemplate, I know.) Or could it have nothing to do with the scar, and his claw is naturally pigmented red? (I'm not sure if that's possible, though, and it seems like too much of a coincidence that his only red claw just happens to be connected to his scar.)

I am very nearsighted as well. Without my glasses, I can't even read the letters on my keyboard clearly from more than about six or eight inches away.

Land Before Time TV Series (2007) / Redclaw' scar
« on: June 25, 2009, 12:26:30 AM »
You know, pokeplayer, that’s actually a really good theory! :! I had always assumed that Red Claw had gotten his scar from another sharptooth, but somehow it had never occurred to me that he might have received it while young. It actually makes a lot of sense, though; how exactly does a full-grown T. rex receive a scar composed of a single long, uninterrupted slash from eyebrow to claw tip? One would expect such an injury to be more easily inflicted by a much larger assailant, which would require Red Claw to have been much younger at the time he received it.
Your hypothesis also opens a new perspective on Red Claw’s character. Maybe the reason he’s such an obstreperous bully who constantly terrorizes smaller dinosaurs (even if one argues his motive to be hunger, it seems to me that Red Claw goes out of his way to attack creatures that would provide relatively inconsequential meals) is because he himself suffered a traumatic childhood. (Holy coprolites, I think we may be on the verge of finding sympathy for Red Claw!)

I’ve got one:

It’s a screenshot from the end of LBT XI, where the Great Valley inhabitants are assembled for Nibbling Day:

Note the two green dinosaurs in the lower right-hand corner and upper left center of the image. Their coloration suggests that the filmmakers intended them to be rainbow faces, but their physical appearance is that of the last kind of dinosaur you would expect to attend an event commemorated by the consumption of tree blossoms.

It would appear that either the rainbow faces were unavailable for shooting that day, forcing the producers to get creative with some green and blue makeup and a couple of guest stars who had conveniently stuck around after filming an earlier scene, :p or the Great Valley residents have become much more lenient about the kinds of dinosaurs they allow into the Valley since the incident with the tinysauruses.

I'll give you that last one; a more specific alternative might be "it had a brain the size of a walnut" (Stegosaurus's brain was actually over twice that size), but your submission will do. I read somewhere that Stegosaurus's intelligence was at least equal to that of a lizard, and reptiles are not as stupid as many people believe. (Personally, I don't like assigning intellectual watermarks to any species. :p) At any rate, you're up. :yes

I've previously looked through all of the LBT images in the "Caption This!" section at least twice, and I can't say I've ever seen this one before.
As for a caption...uh...let's see...

Ducky: (thinking) The next time the pass into the Great Valley gets blocked by white ground sparkles, I will be the one to make them go away, yep yep yep!

General Land Before Time / Meaning of the LBT characters' names
« on: June 24, 2009, 02:30:20 AM »
Something I thought I’d add to my earlier argument for Ducky’s species: it may be possible that Don Bluth and co. did intend for Ducky to be an Anatosaurus, but changed her to look more like a Saurolophus. (It would be very interesting to look at early conceptual artwork of the characters, so we could see how their designs changed from their initial conceptions to what we see in the movie.) Perhaps they added the crest because they thought it gave Ducky more character (I personally find that the crest greatly enhances Ducky’s cuteness :DD), which, of course, they could only do realistically if they made the adults of her species crested as well.

Obviously, we have no idea what sources Don Bluth used when he was researching dinosaurs for The Land Before Time, but when I compare the LBT dinos (the adults, mainly ;)) to the work of paleo-artists like Charles R. Knight and Zdenek Burian, I can't help but notice similarities. These artists set the standard for how dinosaurs were illustrated for much of the 20th century, and their work is prominently featured in older dinosaur books, so the possibility is high that Bluth used their paintings as the basis for many of his prehistoric characters. However, Saurolophus is one dinosaur that does not appear in the works of either of these artists, and indeed is not commonly seen in paleo-art at all. Its uncrested relatives, however, are virtual staples of prehistoric illustration, and depictions of them were far more likely to have been encountered by Bluth when he was doing his research. As a result, I don't believe it is impossible that the LBT hadrosaurs were based on species such as Anatosaurus and Trachodon, with a saurolophine crest added on for aesthetic appeal.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. The majority of this hypothesis is pure speculation, and maybe Ducky was based on a Saurolophus all along. But it’s an idea I thought I’d throw out there, just in case anyone was interested in hearing it. (Wishful thinking, maybe? :rolleyes)

I hate the sound styrofoam makes.
Me too. I also absolutely despise those little styrofoam packing peanuts. :x (I've got two or three garbage bags full of them in my room from all my eBay purchases. I'd rather reuse them, but so far I've never shipped out anything that needed that kind of packing material.)

Land Before Time TV Series (2007) / What you don't like
« on: June 24, 2009, 12:38:53 AM »
The yellow bellies are based on Beipiaosaurus, a small therizinosaur from early Cretaceous China. (It says so on the back of the DVD case.) Of course, the real Beipiaosaurus was covered in primitive, hair-like feathers (not just tufts on the head and tail), and had three (not four)-fingered hands with long, scythe-like claws on them (in spite of this, it was a herbivore). I suppose the LBT people thought the claws would look too scary. <_<

The tinysauruses were probably based on Mussaurus ("mouse reptile"), a prosauropod (an early relative of longnecks) that is so far known only from fossils of hatchlings and juveniles. Adult Mussaurus were almost certainly much larger than Big Daddy, :p but I am more than willing to attribute this decision by the LBT filmmakers to artistic license.

For the record, I rather enjoyed LBT XI, :yes though I think it could have been more interesting (or at least made more sense in terms of the dinosaurs' initial disgust towards the tinysauruses) if an altogether new kind of dinosaur was used, rather than simply a miniature version of a familiar type.

One clichÈ of traditional dinosaur wisdom (I mean human knowledge about dinosaurs, not the philosophy of dinosaurs :p) was that theropods (e.g., T. rex) were incapable of swimming, while herbivores (especially the duck-billed and long-necked varieties) were very good at it. As DarkHououmon stated, this was not the case. There are a number of known fossil trackways of theropods kicking their way through shallow water, so evidently these animals swam sometimes. The bodies of most living land animals are neutrally buoyant (they neither float nor sink in water), meaning that swimming comes fairly easily to them. Seeing as theropod skeletons were highly pneumatized (filled with hollow spaces containing air), they would have floated like corks.

Back to the subject of swimming theropods in LBT, we don’t even know how the Giganotosaurus got to the island in the first place. Obviously, it either used the land bridge (in which case it would have had to have arrived before the gang did) or swam across, but no indication is given of which one. Either way, it would have had to arrived fairly recently, as Chomper believed his parents to be “the only big sharpteeth around here,” and something as big as that Giganotosaurus would not go unnoticed for long on such a small island.

Even if the Giganotosaurus was overpowered by the current at the end of LBT V (though for all we know, it could have been swept all the way back to the mainland ), I can’t say we’ve seen any indication that LBT sharpteeth can’t swim. The raptors caught in the damburst in LBT III seemed to have been quite good at it, seeing as they made it to shore before they were even swept past the point where the leafeaters climbed out of the streambed. And in the TV series, Chomper seems to have no problem participating whenever the gang plays in water. And as far as the original Sharptooth is concerned, I think that he probably drowned not because he couldn’t swim (as Littlefoot had presumed), but because the rock the gang dropped on him knocked him unconscious, or at least breathless.

A couple more Stooge quotes from that same short:

(The stooges are relaxedly cruising in a car that is headed towards the edge of a cliff:)

Curly: Hey, don’t look now, but I think we’re about to be killed!

(Moments later, after swerving to narrowly avoid going over the cliff:)

Moe (to Larry, the driver): Ya know, if I wasn’t so weak from hunger I’d bat your brains out if ya had brains!
