"BAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!"
"HOLY SEA BUISCUT!!!!" Pterano boomed, jumping in fright and whirling around to see this creature. Devon laughed, falling on his back to the ground.
"HAHAHA!! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU GUYS FELL FOR THAT!!!!" Devon thundered, rolling on his stomach. "Oh God! Oh God! Pterano you should've seen the look on your face when I scared you! Haaha haaaaaa!!!!" He laughed harder, his face turning red. "And to think that you're the one who came up with the plan!"
Pterano chuckled, and the gang behind him too laughed they're heads off. "That was very nice, Devon." he said, helping his son off the ground.
"I know, right?" Devon let out a few final laughs as the laughter finally died down. Yet another crack was heard.
"Okay, Devon. Jokes over." Cera said, stepping up to the blue flyer. "You can cut the act now."
Crack.
"Yeah. It was funny at first now it's just plain annoying." Littlefoot agreed, also stepping up to Devon.
"That's ain't me." Devon defended, wondering what the heck was going on.
"Well it has to be one of us." Cera said, before...
Crack!
By now, Devon was breathing heavily. If it wasn't him, and it wasn't any of the gang, nor Pterano...then who was it? Fear gripped his heart as it began to pound in his chest. He jumped directly into Pterano's arms, clinging to him as if he was clinging fo dear life.
CRACK!!
That was the last crack they heard before a familiar green spiketail emerged from the trees. "Sorry about that kids." he said in a low, booming voice. "My herd and I are looking for a place to stay and-Wait." The old spiketail stopped right there, as he began to recognize the young longneck. "Littlefoot? Is that you?"
Littlefoot raised his eyebrows as if the spiketail was crazy. Devon too was dumbfounded, wondering who this spiketail was. And yet, he looked familiar. Very familiar. It was then that realization had hit the blue flyer, as he now recognized the spiketail. He hopped out of Pterano's arms, slowly approaching him. "I remember you. You're Joe, right?" he asked, smiling.
"That would be me, young one." Joe replied, standing tall. "How ya doin, blue flyer?"
"Oh the same old. Just scared the living wits outta my dad over there." Devon chuckled, pointing at Pterano.
"Joe?" Littlefoot said, blinking in surprise. He let out a big smile. "Joe! It's been a while! What brings you here?"
"Well an earthshake hit our valley and now we need a place to stay." Joe explained, then he noticed the blue glider hiding behind a boulder. "So I see you kids got a new friend."
"Oh you mean Guido?" Littlefoot asked, also noticing the frightened glider. "Eh not really. He joined Petrie's family a quite a few years ago. He's been roaming around in the Great Valley, even though we never really knew about it. But he joins us from time to time. You can come out now, Guido!"
"But what if he eats me?" Came the repsonse from that high, frightened male voice of Guido's, causing Joe to burst out laughing.
"Spiketails don't eat meat, Guido." Littlefoot pointed out.
"And I think your friends would be running if I did eat meat." Joe helped, chuckling.
"Okay, if you say so." With that, the little glider took a few small steps from the boulder. "Hi." he said, nervousness hinting in his voice.
"Guido, this is Joe. He helped us get through the Mysterious Beyond a few years ago." the longneck introduced.
"Hi." the glider repeated.
"Well hello there, little fella." Joe turned back to Littlefoot. "So can we stay?"
"Of course! There's always room in the Great Valley for more!" Littlefoot humbly replied, letting out a hearty chuckle. "Just follow me." But then yet another dinosaur emerged from the trees, not a spiketail, but a threehorn. A very grumpy threehorn.
"CERA!!! " the fueled threehorn thundered grumpily.
"Yes, Daddy?" Cera asked in a tiny, nervous voice.
"WHAT is all this racket? You're supposed to be in bed!"
"Let me explain, Mr. Threehorn." Littlefoot said, stepping up to the old triceratops. "This is Joe. His home was destroyed by a great earthshake and-" he gulped, trying to find the words to say. "I was wondering if he and her herd could stay here for a while."
To Littlefoot's, Cera's and as well as everyone else's surprise, Mr. Threehorn let out a friendly, hearty chuckle. "Of course!" he said in a cheerful voice.
"Really?" Littlefoot asked, letting out a hopeful smile.
"No." And just like that Littlefoot's hopeful smile disappeared and so did that hearty chuckle.
"Please? His valley just suffered an earthshake! Come on, Mr. Threehorn! How would you feel if-" Littlefoot stopped right there, as he was interrupted by a female voice.
"Topsy!"
A female pink triceratops also approached the old threehorn, and she wasn't very happy. "What are you doing?" Tria scolded, glaring at her husband. "He's just looking for a place to stay! Lighten up!"
"But we have enough in the Great Valley already!"
"I don't care! We can make room! The Great Valley is always open to anyone!"
"Well we don't have enough food!" The old triceratops argued.
"Topsy, you are so full of it!"
"Well we don't!"
"Do to!
"Do not!"
"Do to!"
As the two threehorn's bickered, the gang just shared a look. Pterano rolled his eyes, slapping his forehead before turning to Devon. "You. Meet me at the cave." he ordered before turning to the gang. "You. Get your skinny little tails in bed! It's late!" And to the spiketail. "You. Follow me." And so, everyone went there seperate ways, except Tria and Topsy of course, who just continued to bicker, not noticing that they were the only two around.
"Do not!"
"Do to!"
"Do not! Do not! DO NOT!!"
Do to! Do to! DO TO!!"
Finally the two stopped bickering, noticing the utter silence. They searched their surroundings and discovered that they were now the only two around. A silence fell upon them, and Mr. Threehorn just looked around awkwardly. "Where'd everyone go?"
----------------------------------------
Devon sat at the enterance of the cavern, staring up at the moon. He's been doing this alot lately, for at least two weeks now. No one, except Pterano of course, knew this but he once had a girlfriend, his first girlfriend in fact. Lavender was her name, and she was his everyday inspiration. She, like him, was a blue cearadactylus, but with brighter colors. Instead of the black outside coating Devon had, she had a violet blue outside coloring. Instead of a night sky blue inside coloring, she had an aquatic blue that was brighter than the sun. Her neckring was as pink as he would blush. Her eyes matched the greenest of grasses and her smile always brought a smile to his face.
It was ten years ago today that she was killed. Killed, by one of Devon's own relatives; Sierra. All because he ran away from home after all the beatings he had recieved. He just couldn't take it anymore, and he knew he deserved better than that. So he ran off to his girlfriend's cave, and stayed there for about two weeks til he recovered. Then, he and Lavender decided to go for a midday flight, just racing innocently like hatchlings would do. Laughter would fill the daylight blue skies, not a cloud in sight.
Then, something extraordinary happened. Devon realized he was ready to take the "next step" in his relationship with Lavender, and to his surprise, so was Lavender. So they decided to meet in a cave about ten minutes from that moment on. Lavender had to check in with her parents and Devon had to get her a few daisies, which were her favorite flower, and a few roses, his favorite flower. When he returned to the cave, however, let's just say he saw the most horrifying sight he would ever expect to see...
His girlfriend...impaled by a javelin spear. A javelin spear that Sierra was holding. Devon freaked out, screaming her name. He pushed Sierra out of the way and he took her into his arms, just in time to say goodbye. Tears were already spilling in his eyes when she stuttered her final words:
"I-I love you, D-Devon."
Afterwords, Devon almost grew bitter, and cold. Or at least he would have if Pterano wasn't there. What he did after Lavender had passed away in his arms, he flew off to Pterano's cave, tears flooding his eyes, and told him everything. Pterano embraced him, holding him until tears were no longer to shed. He cupped his wet cheeks, looking into his melancholic eyes. "Everything will be alright," he would say. "I'm here."
It has been ten years since then, and it still hurts today just as much as it hurt way back when. The blue cearadactylus couldn't help but shed a few tears, due to the pressure and memories. Such harse memories, that Devon wished had never happened. Just then, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He gazed upward to see...Lavender? Seriously! For a flash of a second there, he could've swarn he saw Lavender herself gazing down at him with concern his eyes, looking as if she was checking in on him. But it turned out to be his father, staring down at him with the same look. "Devon? What are you doing out here so late?" Pterano asked, taking a seat next to the younger flyer. "What's wrong?" Right there, Pterano wiped the tears off Devon's face with his claws.
Devon could only stare at him, as it was all he could do with the pressure and harsh memories that flooded his mind. As if he could read minds, Pterano got the message. Devon only gave him that look once a year, and it has always been on this very day. He knew this time of year was harsh on him, as it has always been in the last ten years. Pterano scooped him up in his strong arms, rubbing his back reassuringly.
Devon didn't fight the embrace. He allowed himself to be sunk in, burying his face into Pterano's chest so he could listen to that powerful heartbeat of his. "Everything will be alright," the red flyer reassured, tightening his grip. "I'm here."
"You always say that." Devon returned, his voice a little muffled from his face being smashed up against his father's chest.
"Well, everything does turn out alright in the end doesn't it?" Pterano shot back, then he smirked, coming up with just the perfect thing that would most definitely cheer Devon up, or at least put a smile on his face. "Oh Devon...I'm thinking of a song." he whispered, loosening his grip on Devon.
"Heh, not now, Dad." Devon shrugged it off but Pterano wasn't backing down just yet.
"Oh it's a wonderful song! I'm sure you're familiar with it." He broke his embrace, standing up. "Yes I'm a very important creature!" he sang, stepping around. "Tremendously brave and strong. I find that I am frequently right, when others are often wrong. Instead of arguing blindly, they should open their eyes and see that the one that'll bring them paradise, is the-" he stopped right there, noticing Devon wasn't budging. "Oh come on! I know you know the words! Just three little words..."
Devon rolled his eyes, but he smiled at the same time. That Pterano. He always knew how to put a smile on others no matter what mood they're in. "Very important me." he spat out, giving a small chuckle.
"That's the spirit! Now sing along with me!" Pterano flapped his wings. "I'm a fabolous fearsome flyer-" he stopped again, noticing Devon wasn't singing. "Oh come now! Don't make an old flyer sing by himself!"
Devon let out another low chuckle, giving Pterano a small smile. He might as well. He too stood up, stepping up next to his father. "I'm a fabolous fearsome flyer! I handle life with finess! When others say no it can't be so! My answer is always yes! I was BORN to be their savior! That is my DESTINY!!" There, Pterano and Devon side embraced, singing that to the skies loudly. "Why do they despise, not recognize, THE TRULY FANTASTIC ME!" they faced eachother, taking eachother's hands, before bursting out laughing.
"Hey could you two keep it down?!?" A low booming voice was heard from below. At the base of the cave, Joe stood there, staring up at them. Apparently, he has been awakened by their loud singing. "I'm trying to sleep!"
"Oh! Sorry Joe!" Devon returned, winking at him.
"Just don't let it happen again. I'm not nocturnal, you know." Joe said, laying back down at that same spot.
"Yes, we know." Pterano replied, wrapping an arm around his son again. Joe nodded, and curled himself up for warmth, closing his eyes. He fell asleep in a matter of minutes.
Pterano smirked, playfully elbowing his son in the arm. "Yeah Devon. Keep it down!"
"Hey! You're the one who was singing!"
"So were you!"
"Only because you forced me to!" Devon shot back, smirking, as he knew Pterano was only playing with him.
"No, I did not force you. You did that all on your own! I just pulled the trigger."
"Yeah, whatever, Dad. Whatever you say."
Pterano ruffled his head playfully, chuckling as he pulled him in for another hug. "You know I love you, right?" he asked.
"Yes yes. You told me that, like a million times."
The red flyer chuckled again, nuzzling his boy gently. "But I always mean it." They gazed into eachother's eyes, that seemed to be glowing due to the brightness of the night circle. They kissed, and Devon sunk into his father, nuzzling his chest before drifting off into a nice, peaceful slumber.
Pterano noticed this, as he lifted to boy off the ground. He carried him into the cavern, and gently placed him on the floor. He was about to head out for a breath of air, but Devon's tight grip on his neck proved that he wanted him to stay. The red flyer chuckled again, laying down next to his boy, keeping him nestled warmly, and safely against him. A smile formed on the boy's lips, and he cuddled up to his father. "Hmm...I love you, Dad." he muttered, though he did not know it.
"I love you too." Pterano whispered, kissing his forehead and tightened his arms around him. "Sleep well, my son." With that, he too ended slipping into a peaceful slumber.
