Yes. Coke was used as layer in the AVCOAT shield in the Apollo missions. Despite releasing great amounts of heat when burning, coke is very difficult to ignite and is an excellent insulator. Another material that was, counterintuitively, used in some heat shields (some Soviet ones) was wood, also for being a good insulator.
