The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

As you may know by now, I've been messing with InvisionFree for awhile now. There should be an option when you edit a post that you can check, whether the 'This post was edited by' thing is present or not in your post after you edit it. However, it is missing for the members. So why am I saying anything? Well, 'other' member groups have that option, at least from what I've seen. There's an option in the InvisionFree to fix this for the individual member groups. What I'm petitioning is that this option be enabled for us 'common members.'

EDIT: Edit.

Give me a compelling reason why I should enable it.

I just never understand why not, what's it matter what time we edited it? I want to know why it says when we update it in the first place...

on the same note I want to know why we can't delete our own posts...

I don't mind the "this message was editted" thing. It helps me know if new information was put in a post or not.

It's not extremely important, but sometimes, I may not want to pronounce boldly to the world that I made a slight edit, like a misspelling or something. With the option enabled, you can choose if you want the edit message to appear in your post or not.

I guess another question I was asking was if there was a particular reason the feature was disabled. I'm pretty sure that this effects Members, but not Administrators, because I've seen Admins make edits without the message appearing. There isn't a very compelling reason to do it, but I'm not aware of a reason not to do it, or why it wasn't enabled in the first place,

This "post has been edited" thing is very annoying.  Sometimes, I just forget to add a smiley or something and it looks like I've changed the content.  It is also pretty unattractive if you ask me.  I don't like to look like I don't have a definitive response to a post and that's what it seems like when that thing comes on.  Most of the time, it's just for a misspelling or to add a smiley.  It has been bothering me, but I wasn't gonna make a big stink about it.  It's not that big of a deal.

I will talk to the staff about this, but I'm not in favor of changing things as they are.  You don't have to state why you edited a post.  I will sometimes edit posts to change wording on some of my lengthier responses.

Hmm... that's fine. I just wonder why you're particularly in favor of disabling this option for the commom members. You seem pretty bent on not changing it. I actually thought that this was something you forgot to do, mabey just an oversight. I thought it was something you would have liked to have known about. With your being an administrator, it wouldn't have been easy for you to notice, since it doesn't affect administrators, just regular members.

I don't really care if this is changed or not. I liked things just the way they were.

It really doesn't change too much. It just lets posters decide if they want the message "This post has been edited by ****" or not. It's really not much more than a mild inconvenience. I personally think Petrie has a reason for disabling it for us. If so, then it's alright. ;)

There's certainly a reason its enabled.  Its a "digital trail" if there's ever trouble on the board...you can't cover up issues or problems or delete them.  That's why regular members do not have the option to not say "post edited by ______" or delete their own messages.

I see Petrie's reason so it does make sense.  It's a sort of nuisance  but if the admin have a valid reason I can see why they'd want it.

Actually, it's disabled at the current. ;)

But, yeah, if you feel that it compromises the board's security, then I don't want to interfere. Just pointing out something I thought you might have liked to have known.
