Too early?

When is it too early to stock up on holiday wares? I mean, I see Halloween candy already!

: Gee, now we're going to have kids checking for expiration dates.

I even saw a Christmas store in our mall. Yeah. This is nuts.

I mean, yeah I know my last playlist on my computer just now was all of Christmas music, but that's different...I forgot to do my traditional "Christmas in July" so I'm making up for it now.

Have we gone to far in corporate culture? (And why have I seen nothing for Thanksgiving if they're doing Halloween and Christmas stuff? I think Thanksgiving is more important than the other two.)

because Thansgiving lies inbetween the other two, It gets drowned out. Yes, IMo September is too early to roll out halloween stuff, just as November is too early to roll out Christmas stuff

Sounds about right from what I'm hearing. Businesses already putting stuff out in line for the next holiday season. They've always gotta pre-empt the holiday times before they roll in. If you think about it, it's just over a month away til Halloween and if you're taking notice of what they're doing, then it's obviously working. You're acknowledging that the next holiday is just around the corner and you're supposed to be preparing for it...that's how they get their extra profits compared to the quiet times in between the hols.

(Sheesh! Always hated business studies yet I can recall and relate the info to modern practises...LOL

I agree that Christmas stuff is brought up way too early. There is a commercialisation of holidays which I find sort of regretable. St. Martin's day used to be celebrated here in Germany. It was a nice holiday and it was celebrated with lantern pageants. Most kids made their own lanterns. "Stutenkerle" (a human figure made of a sweet dough) were eaten and the most famous deed of St. Martin (his sharing of his cloak and bread with the beggar) were performed by actors. Yet this celebration had little to offer for commerce so it became almost forgotten. Some holidays (such as Halloween and Valentine's day) have been introduced here mainly by those who sell anything for these celebrations. Being so much made up for the purpose of commerce and lacking the traditions these holidays have in America and other countries I can't say I really enjoy them over here

Valentine's day really is a commercial holiday. St. Valentine has very little historical backgroound, all that is known about him is that he was matyred by the Romans sometime in the 3rd century A.D.

I know my parents won't buy any Halloween stuff or bring any down for decorating until about a week before the holiday.

: Christmas is another story, but it's nowhere near as early as commercial America.

If I lived on my own, I'd hardly decorate at all.

Ditto that in one sense. I probably wouldn't make a massive effort to decorate unless I had kids about (be them my own or just younger family members) but in that sense, I wouldn't do it for myself. I'd do more so for the others in my company.
