help with viruses

oke i want to delete some virusses but some are in the c: thingy and my scanner says the computer can crash or get instable if i remove the file ot virus vault :angry: and i cant heal them so how can i delete them please help

When a virus infects a system file there's no way to fix this except to delete the file by force. It totally crashes windows so you have to pop in the windows xp disk and select the "repair" option. Either that or just wipe the entire computer. That would give you the least headaches. Backup and wipe doesn't take very long. 2 hours at most unless you've got like 1tb of files or something.

Wipe means you have to pop in the xp disk and format your computer, deleting everything that you've made. You back your files up first using an external hard drive, CDs, DVDs, or flash drives.

Edwin, I'm using avg antivirus free too atm. I can't update it for some reason

I hope that virus can be fixed..

Sometimes it works for me to put the computer back in time(systeemherstel, dutch) was wondering.. Is that actually good for the computer? Do you know that Austin?

I recommend that anyone with AVG uninstall it and download the copy of AVG free I have on my server. It's in the "standard tools" folder. It works great so long as you do everything it says to do. Mumbling, if it won't update it's probably because you've got the old version. Upgrade to version 8. It also has free spyware protection so it's much better. You can't get version 8 except by uninstalling your current version and downloading and installing the version I have on my server.

I've read avg went down the tubes with version 8. Whenever you get your computer up and running again, you may want to try a different program to watch for viruses like Avast, or just stop going to sites or places that usually give viruses...

I've got avast on this laptop. I'm not really known to it(as it is my moms laptop) but I haven't heard about any problems either. Might try it too... I just need my computer to be protected well enough because of my little brothers downloading games and stuff.

I don't know where you've read that Petrie, but AVG has gotten loads better with version 8. With spyware protection and real time support, it provides an overall more secure environment than its predecessors. There is one thing I don't like about version 8 though. They have a small advertisement on their main scan page that you have to minimize every time you open it up. Not a huge bother since you only have to open it up once a month or so but they really shouldn't have that. "Oh, do you want to pay us $60 for a full version of AVG?" NO STUPID! I downloaded AVG Free edition because it was FREE!!!

Securing your computer is easy. Download AVG, Install, Keep it updated. Then download Spybot S&D, Install, Keep it updated. So long as you have both of those programs, almost nothing will be able to penetrate your system. Just this month, AVG has caught over 100 viruses and Spybot has found over 150 instances of spyware and other malicious software. If it can protect me, it can protect ANYONE. I download stuff I shouldn't constantly.

Sure I believe ya. I've just had bad experience with Spybots in the past. But if you recommend it.. :^.^: I dont doubt your computerknowledge so I might consider installing that spybot S&D too.

I always update my programms(except for when they dont want to update of course

) So that wouldnt be a problem. Thanks

The problem with Spybot is that there's so many bad versions of it out there. So many hackers have riddled spybot with spyware and then made it available for download by unsuspecting people. :angry: It's really hard to find a good version out there. If you had problems before you probably downloaded one of these fake versions. It's really easy to do. Hackers make websites that look 100% legit but are totally fake crap. -_-

BTW, take a look at my recent AVG scan.

Lol.. We have virusses sometimes but I can most of the time get them before they actually get active.. Most of the times it's one of my brothers who definitly didn't listen to me when I told them not to download certain things. O well

Not that its any of my business (PM me if you want) but WTF are you doing with your computer to get so many hits like that on a regular basis? I'll bet AVG isn't blocking everything if you're going to dangerous sites like that every week. You just got burned, what two weeks ago doing this stuff? Maybe a little cliche will help: "fool me once, shame on you, but fool me twice, shame on me"...perhaps you might want to consider doing something different because AVG doesn't keep you safe from your computer habits. You've proven that to me.

Well it takes about a year for me to get something that AVG and Spybot can't take care of. The reason I got "burned" two weeks ago was because like a moron I forgot to install spybot on my computer. I thought I had it but I didn't. Spybots teatimer is the best app ever. It'll catch ANYTHING. The reason I got so infected two weeks ago was because all I had protecting me was AVG. It still took over a year for that to happen though. AVG is very efficient. I know I wouldn't have gotten anything if I had spybot installed.

As for what I'm downloading, I can't be too specific about the files because I'm sworn to secrecy but they deal with modifying your core operating system. A lot of the time they're infected with s*** but occasionally you can get something great. Unfortunately the hacker forums have a lot of bad people there just trying to further their own goals and they do that by trying to infect others. They upload a file and make it sound like a really good hack tool when in fact it's a big bundle of viruses and spyware. <_< When you're a hacker and have hacker friends, you've always gotta watch your back.

I KNOW when I'm infected. If my computer takes longer than 20 seconds to boot, there's something wrong. If I start getting error messages that make no sense, there's something wrong. It's not hard to tell when you're infected.

I'm thinking of having another computer right next to mine that's just made for downloading so I can scan the files before I put them onto my master. The trouble is my router is in my office (because I want my office to be totally wired for optimal efficiency) so my room runs off wireless. So does my moms. My mom has two computers connected to wifi; an apple imac and an apple ibook. I have two computers connected wirelessly too. I don't want to add any more than 4 computers to my wireless network. I prefer wired connections because they're much faster. If I were to add another computer to my room just for downloading, it would add another computer to my wireless network. In addition, I would have to get another 22" widescreen monitor for the computer I would add, which is a significant expense (I'll be getting a decent brand. It costs over $400 for a good one). Because of this, I don't think I'll be doing this.
