No one ever gained recognition by following the crowd.
This one’s pretty straightforward, and like most of my quotes, it reflects a habit/belief/characteristic of mine. I’m positively phobic about doing what everyone else does for the sake of fitting in. I’m not what one would call a rebel (I still try to fit in to some extent, and my sense of morality obliges me to follow societal rules), but I am averse to conformity: when freedom is an option, I do things my own way. (One early memory I have of my non-conformist habits comes from 1st grade, in which the first class activity of the year was to draw a picture of an apple. Everyone was expected to draw a red apple, but back then, my favorite color was green, and I figured that since there was such a thing as green apples, there wasn’t anything wrong with making mine that color. -_-)
I experimented with a couple of variations on this quote, selecting what I felt to be the most appropriate one for my signature. Here are some rejected versions:
No one ever got anywhere by following the crowd.
I kind of preferred how this one sounded, but, literal-minded nutcase that I am,

I decided that, strictly speaking, it was inaccurate: people have gotten through
life by being conformist; they just never made names for themselves doing so.
No one ever became famous by following the crowd.
I was quick to discard this version, because while technically true, I personally have little interest in fame (I like to be recognized, yes, but not to be the center of attention all of the time), and I wanted my signature quotes to reflect my own personality and philosophy.
