The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

"You would not know what he- oh." The bartender noticed Shal'thzar's lack of vision. "I am sorry to hear it. Do you need a room to spend the night? We also offer free services with our paid rooms..."

"No worries!" Shal'thzar said with a toothy grin. She then thought about a room for the night and said: "Yeah what they hey." Shal'thzar said. "How much?" She asked, smiling again.

"5 silver pieces per day for a room, and 3 silver pieces per day more for three meals a day. Additional food and drink can be purchased as well. We also offer free services with a room, if you are interested." The bartender said to Shal'thzar.

"Ok. I'll probably stay one night." Shal'thzar said with a smile. She put her hand inside a small pouch to see how many silver pieces were inside. Only seven? ah might as well.. Shal'thzar thought to herself. She took out the five pieces of silver and gave them to the bartender.

The bartender looked at her pouch, and noticed that there wasn't much in it. "You know, miss, we offer some free services... would you like us to tell you some of them?"

"Included with your stay at the inn is a free supply of running water, and that includes hot water. We also offer free laundry services, full use of the steam room, free access to our shows, free services from the masseuses, delivery of food and laundry to your room on request, and free drinks every other day from sunset to midnight, provided that your purchase at least one meal earlier that day." The bartender told Shal'thzar.

The shows (mostly music and dancing) were already open to the public as it was...

"I should be fine with that." Said Shal'thzar

"Excellent. Here is the key to your room... it is on the east wing, second floor, last door on the right. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask." The bartender, who also served as innkeeper, it seemed, told Shal'thzar.

"Ok, may i also request food be brought up to the room? Fruit? meat? either one is okay." Im still okay with water. Thank you very much" Shal'thzar said, paying the bartender, both for the room and food.

Shal'thzar walked up the stairs with little trouble, headed for the east wing and then finally to the door leading to her room.

Shal'thzar was tired, very tired, as she has only had three or two hours of sleep in the past couple of days. A growl from her stomach then reminded her of the food she requested. She would know when food arrives as she can smell it, but her smelling abilities still are not as good as her hearing or the use of vibrations. She searched for a bed and sat down on it..

(OOC: The food is not free, so that is okay. Having the food brought upstairs is free... heh. Also, media reference coming up... )

Meanwhile...

Kos and his siblings arrived at their school on time, as usual.

The school they attended, The Red Claw academy, was private. Dracons had no such thing as public schools, so all education was left up to temples, tutors, or a school run by a non-governmental institution. "The Claw", as it was called, offered education on a wider range of levels than humans were used to seeing under one roof... this institution educated Dracons from elementary to college level, even going into specialist fields, such as conjuration magic and architecture.

Five main buildings surrounded by a high sandstone wall made up the institution... one for the younger Dracons, one for teenagers, one for the college-level students, an office building, and a structure for advanced classes. In addition to this, there were many smaller buildings which served various purposes (storage, a small temple, housing, additional office space, etc.)

Located in the middle of Minthebec, "The Claw" was a respectable school, but hardly the richest that a Dracon could hope to attend. There were at least three other schools in Minthebec which were even more prestigious, and one other which might also qualify for that title. In addition, The Claw had to compete with schools in other cities for the attendance of the rich... the University of Hewaniar far outstripped its capabilities.

Kos liked the school for its nice playground... which is typical of a six year old... Ver liked the magical lab available there, although his talent was growing at such a pace as to outgrow it! He also like the library. Kria disliked her school, as it had a very lax dance program... her parents had to enroll her in classes in another school, one specifically set up for dancing.

While this was going on, Ophion and Aurescia ran their magic shop. Attached to their house, their shop was relatively small, but nevertheless useful. Upon entering, customers would see two sets of brown wooden shelves on either side of the store, and a counter with several more shelves behind it. Someone wishing to buy a simple magic item could just pick it off of the shelves, but more serious customers (the ones who made Ophion real money!) would go up to the counter and ask for an item that was not as readily available.

The store, named "Ophion's" was not a speciality store. It sold magical items of all kinds... wands, staffs, rings, books, amulets, powders, elixers, tonics, tinctures, potions, scrolls, staves, necklaces, talismans, magical and alchemical components, balms, salves, and many others. In addition, Ophion offered magical services to customers, such as enchanting items or interpreting arcane texts. Aurescia helped her husband run the shop in many ways, especially when it came to Alchemy, as she spent much of the time preparing potions in one of three sizable gray cauldrons in the back room. She also spent time inscribing magical scrolls, which was considered busywork among the Dracons... making scrolls to order as well as keeping a stock of commonly-purchased scrolls.

Magical scrolls were pieces of paper with a spell written on them. Once read, the spell would be activated, and the magic in the scroll would be discharged. These were not to be confused with magical books, the likes of which commanded a massive price, but were also hard to sell at a profit, due to the high price Ophion had to pay from his suppliers, and the fact that there was so much competition for magical books, that any hike in prices beyond a certain small profit margin would enable his competition in that field to undercut him.

Some items were useful and practical... such as healing balm, or curing elixer. Others, such as enchanted perfume and ensorcelled foods (enchanted so as not to spoil, like magical apples or pomegranates), were luxury items which commanded great respect among the vain rich. Many of these wealthy Dracons did not care for the price, so long as it was an item that was in fashion. As a result, the stock of these items changed very frequently... with every passing of the moon, it seemed. Recently Ophion had to order five different colors of crystal balls in five months to keep pace with the changing demands of the consumers...

But the largest profit-making goods Ophion could sell were magical antiques. A purchase of these goods was rare, as they buyer would have to be able to recognize the power in the item and have a use for it. In addition, Ophion's supply of such items was limited to what he could purchase from mundane antique and curio dealers and use his own powers to identify from. Non-magical goods in his stock were enchanted and sold at a profit, too. Recently, business had been going very, very well. It seemed that more and more Dracons were turning to magic to solve their problems... using things like magical rings to keep one safe from violence, or using love potions to smooth over relationship problems, or even enchanting a weapon or armor to gain an advantage against foes in an arena...

One area that the couple had considered going into was the sale of magical familiars, animals or other companions of a mage... but since neither Aurescia nor Ophion had a familiar of their own, they were hesitant. Business had been good, although there was a possible problem in the recent opening of so many specialty stores for certain items... they had seen their wand sales plummet after opening of a specialty wandmaker two blocks down the road, and their sales of scrolls had stagnated after a magical scribe opened up his shop five blocks away from them...

Regardless, there was no question that their store put more than enough food on the table, and kept a roof over their heads.

Out in a blacksmith's hut on a country road, Torvin was busy cleaning out his furnace. He was using a hammer and chisel to break off the pieces of slag that had accumulated in the furnace. The area echoed with the sound of hammer and chisel breaking the glassy slag.

A few hours later...

Aurescia was taking a nap on a mat that she had laid out for herself. It was midday and she had just eaten lunch with her husband. Ophion continued to run the shop... it wasn't the fastest day so far, but a rush of customers was expected in an hour or so... which was when Aurescia usually woke up from her nap...

When morning came, the trio came from their room to find the "party" room empty of females, save for the inn employees.  They plan on spending more of the day exploring the whole of the city, and perhaps the outskirts as well.

Halo carries two waterskins to the bar and sets them on the counter.  "Fill these up with water, please?" he asked the bartender.

"Sure thing" the bartender replied, as he filled the skins up with water. "Did you hear about the blast nearby here? They said there was a crazy mage who went off and blasted a hole in another inn."

"I saw the aftermath at the inn," Halo replied.  "I didn't get any further involved, though.  There were quite a few individuals there that look like they knew what they were looking for.  Did they find whoever started the attack?"

Back at the inn...

"No, I don't think they found him, or if they did, I didn't hear of it. Sorry." The bartender said.

Meanwhile...

Kos was in gym class with all the other kids his age. This school had mixed sex gym classes, and females were in attendance as well. Kos was too young to think about certain things involving females, so there were no issues for him or the others...

The problems were that other males in the class were often older than him... and would pick on those younger than themselves. Today, they had hung Kos from one of the ornamental decorations... so that it looked like the carved dragon head was biting him!

"Has anything been said on what this sorcerer looks like?" Halo asked.
