Minbenthac was a large city, but not the largest. Rumors traveled quickly, as did legitimate news. The events of the past day were already known by most people... and they would be quickly forgotten. Rogue mages, drunken parties, and magical battles were par for the course in these parts...

Torvin entered his room, put out the candle, took off his canvas apron and soon fell asleep on the bed.

Early the next morning, Cassia knocked on Torvin's door. She had gone to sleep herself when she had discovered that he had fallen asleep, but she was still dressed in her light "Dracon clothes." When she heard Torvin wake up, a smile passed over her face...   ;)

Jake walked in to a nearby inn that had lot's of noise coming from it. He walked over to the bar and he sat down on a stool "looks like your makin' business tonight!" yelled Jake over the noise to the bartender

"Yeah, it was constant business, from last night into the day!" came the reply. "We had to keep changing bartenders, it went on for so long. What'll it be, human?" Jake had spent a lot of time in these bars... it was good for business, but not the greatest thing overall. Still, it was fun, no on doubted that.

Harly worked many odd jobs around the city for a few weeks, but none of them suited his true potential.  He was born to command a sailing vessel, and being so land locked make him edgey.

One morning after working stacking grain, he just couldn't take it anymore.  Once his work hours were done, he went to pick up his old captains suit and gathered the coins he had managed to make over the course of the month.  He had almost 300, which compared to the peasants who lived around here he was near royalty, but from experience he knew just how fast it could go.

With a huff, Harly moved into the streets for another day in the market.

At that hour, Ophion was in the marketplace, looking for some potion ingredients. He would look in the regular marketplace first, as it was easier to reach than the city's magic bazaar. He ran into Harley in the middle of the market...

"Harley? Is it you? Where have you been since we took on that rogue mage?"

"Working of course son," replied Harly, "I plan on building myself my own ship, a bit of a free-booter if you will."

"Do you need any help?" Ophion asked. "It's the least I can do after what you did to help earlier."

Jake soon left the bar and he headed out into the streets. He was walking through the market place to get back to the inn he was staying at. In the distance Jake could see another human interacting with a Dracon. Jake ran over "hey it's nice to another of my kind here"

"Your kind, boy we are worlds apart.  One day you gotta make something o yourself, like me today," responded Harly.

"Of course you can help magic man, a ship needs sails, a steady stern, and a crew. Think you can look around a bit?"

"If you need a crew I would suggest you go to the guild hall district. It's about 30 blocks east of here... that way!" Ophion replied, pointing to the east. "There's bound to be at least a few good sailors who can sail a ship up the river..."

"No...no! Get away from me!" Emerald shouted as he ran as fast as he could.

"Oh come now..you don't want to play?" Axel cackled, drool flying from her open jaws.

Emerald didn't know how much longer he could run. He could feel his heart beating faster and his breath quickening. His throat was starting to feel a little dry and his feet were starting to ache. But he knew he couldn't stop now. He had to keep moving until he got away from this...this monster chasing after him. He saw what appeared to be a city aheaed and he quickened his pace.

The two were of the same species, a race of intelligent beasts that looked a bit like a sauropod with the claws and teeth of a predator. Emerald was a green-colored male with a gray muzzle, paws, and belly. His claws were red and his eyes were blue. The alimon chasing after him was much larger in size due to being many years older than he was. Axel was yellow with a red-violet underside, a brown back, and red claws like Emerald's. Her eyes were light blue, and her eyewhites were a darker shade of blue. Physically, the most distinguishing feature between the two was that Emerald had a single row of long feathers while Axel had a short mane of downy feathers.

Axel leaped forward and slammed against Emerald. Before he could fight back, Axel pushed his head into the ground, rendering his jaws useless for defending himself. Emerald kicked his legs wildly, but the female had quickly positioned herself so he couldn't strike her. She used her superior size and strength to keep the younger alimon pinned on the ground. Slowly, Emerald stopped struggling and looked up with one eye.

Axel grinned and lowered her head down to Emerald's level. "You should have just surrendered yourself. This would have been a lot easier on you if you had."

"How would I know that?" Emerald asked, baring his teeth. Regardless if he gave himself up earlier or not, it wouldn't have made much of a difference. He wasn't going to allow Axel a chance to go forth with her plans. "You're nothing but a lying, despicaple excuse for a....!"

Axel put pressure suddenly on Emerald's head, her claws cutting into his face. "That's no way to talk to your superior, now is it?" She asked in a darkened tone of voice. Emerald didn't answer and closed his eyes tightly. Axel lowered her head so that her jaws were inches away from Emerald's vulnerable neck. "I should just finish you off now...but I like to play with my prey..."

With that, she moved her head away and her eyes locked onto the base of his neck, where it attached to the body. She opened her jaws as wide as she could and slammed her jaws shut around that area of Emerald's body. Emerald howled in pain and started to struggle frantically. Axel simply ignored him and continued to drive her teeth deep into the flesh, blood pouring from the wound. At least, Emerald was able to get free by knocking Axel off with his legs.

However, Axel hadn't opened her jaws when he knocked her back, so she tore some flesh from his neck. Emerald staggered back, crying out in pain several times. Emerald looked in horror at the blood forming on the ground, but he didn't have time to let it sink in. He looked up and saw Axel rushing towards him again. Out of fear, he stood up on two legs and swatted at her with a paw. Out of shere luck, he managed to strike her. Axel fell back and hit her head against the ground and was knocked out.

Emerald didn't know how he managed to knock out an alimon that size with one hit, but he wasn't going to sit around and ask questions. He quickly turned towards the city and ran as fast he could. As he got closer, he started to slow down. The blood loss was starting to get to him. His vision was getting blurry as blood continued to leak from the wound on his neck. Finally, he collapsed to the ground. His eyes closed as he slipped into unconsciousness as well.

Aurescia was walking through the streets of Minbenthac, going out to purchase more goods for the magic store. Always interested in the possibility of finding new potion formulas, she had already been to two markets this morning alone. Fortunately, they were all close by. If this third one didn't have what she was looking for, the sorceress would have to go all the way to the southern districts of the city to find it... she hated that place... all that crime, and people tossing their wastewater out of windows... ugh.

Approaching the market, she quickly found a stand which sold antiques.

"Excuse me? Hello? Do you hear me?" Getting the attention of the vendor was hard to do in this market. Why so many other people were interested in this stuff was beyond her...

"Ah, yes. What is it that you want, ya- oh..."

The vendor, normally a rude figure, noticed Aurescia. She was known around here as a powerful sorceress in her own right, even though most of her magic was ritual, that is, it was essentially stationary, and her spells were cast from within the confines of her own home. Regardless, she was still dangerous if angered... and her husband was ever more so! It was best to attend to her now and be rude again later... to safer customers!

"Oh yes. Aurescia. Pleased to see you again. What are you looking for today?"

"I would like to see your scrolls, particularly those which pertain to magical potions." she replied.

"Well, the thing about that is... oh... I don't really know what the scrolls say. I just buy them from adventurers who get them from gods-knows-where. I leave the translation up to the customer."

"Then what are those scrolls that say 'strength formula' on them?" Aurescia asked him, suspecting the answer.

"Well, what the customer doesn't know won't hurt him, right?" The vendor said with a nervous smile, revealing his many missing teeth. "I don't try the same trick on a talented mage, because I have great respect for you, and your husband-"

"And that I can of blow up this stand with a single spell." she added with a wink.

"That too. Take a look at these scrolls here. I don't know what language they are written in, or how to translate them, but I'm hoping you do. I'll even let you read them here if you like."

Looking at the scrolls, Aurescia sighed inwardly. She was skilled at translating ancient languages in the Auran tongue... even more so than her husband, but these were written in Ignan, a language she knew little of, despite sharing a common alphabet with her own Draconic tongue. The most she could do was make out a few words here and there. After deducing just enough to tell that one scroll contained a formula for a new kind of healing potion, she decided to purchase it. She fully intended to take it home, use a spell to aid in the translation, and hopefully, get a new potion out of it...

Walking back, Aurescia thought of the plan... buy low, sell high. Hopefully, this was make a powerful potion a low cost... the fewer ingredients, the better. As the sorceress walked back through the crowds, she noticed that it was getting very hot... even for Minbenthac. The sun beat down on her scales from all sides. Normally, this was a welcome feeling, but not at this intensity, and she had been outside for hours now... her light clothing did little to shield her from the sun's rays...

"Okay, change of plan" she thought. "Find a shaded path back home, put this stuff down, get some water, take a nap, and then get to work translating this scroll." As she found a new path, the sorceress could sense fewer Draconic life forms... her magic enabled her to sense the energy in all things living... but suddenly, she felt something... new. Something was... unfamiliar. She smelled something odd too... blood? Heading over to the source of it, Aurescia found a curious creature; it looked a bit like a Drake... like it was some sort of reptile... but it had feathers to it. Was this the work of a mage? Some sort of composite creature?

Putting the formula away, Aurescia saw that the creature's life force was weak... a close examination revealed that it had been badly hurt in a fight. Using a minor spell to make a single item hover, she was able to pick up the creature and support its weight... she was not sure her muscles could handle it if it was fully under the force of gravity. Taking the creature to the lab behind the store, Aurescia laid the Alimon down on a cushion. Since the store, magic lab, and house were all connected in one structure, she was able to use a cushion from their living room for this... it was the one she particularly liked... well, the blood stains could be dealt with later...

Applying a healing salve to the creature, Aurescia then cast a calming spell, so that whatever this thing was would not maul her, in case it was aggressive. She knew that the spell was only partially effective; if the creature was truly out for her blood, it would eat her very calmly. It was worth the risk, in any case... few mages passed up the chance to learn about a new, possibly magic creature... and she was beating her husband to it! She loved Ophion dearly, and was the happy mother of his children, but Aurescia never lost her fiery interest in learning, despite being the more "domestic" of the couple. What secrets did this creature have...?

Emerald slowly opened one eye. His vision was very blurry at first, but it quickly sharpened. He lifted his head partially as he tried to remember what the last thing that happened was. All he could remember was being chased by Axel. Now he woke up in a place he's never been to and there was a sharp pain....then it all came back to him.

But yet despite the horror he had faced what may have been hours ago, he felt surprisingly calm. He wasn't sure what it was, but he wasn't feeling frightened, despite being in a strange place and nearly getting killed by Axel. He managed to lift his head high enough to turn his head so he could get a look around the room.

Aurescia looked around and saw that the creature was waking. Not knowing if it could speak or not, she applied a spell of magic designed to comfort it... this had no real healing effect, but it deadened pain and produced a warm feeling. Moving her right arm to stroke the Alimon, she asked:

"Can you understand me? My name is Aurescia, a sorceress. I found you on the streets of Minbenthac and brought you here."

Emerald jerked slightly in response to being touched. But something had quickly calmed him down. He turned his head over towards Aurescia. He didn't recognize what species she was and he started to wonder just how far away from home he truly was.

He thought he heard her talk, but her words made no sense to him. He tilted his head slightly to one side. Although he doubt she could understand him, he decided to speak. "I do not understand you."

Aurescia heard that the creature was trying to speak. It sounded like words, not roaring or growling. She couldn't begin to understand the words, but she was able to cast a spell to called "tongues." This spell granted the creature touched the ability to speak and understand the language of any intelligent creature.

With but a touch, Emerald was able to speak with Aurescia, and after a second spell, "Permanance", the spell would last until someone dispelled it.
