The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

How to train Your Dragon

Hollywood will just about try to adapt anything, won't they? So who else wants to put down ten bucks that this'll become a live-action Pokemon film, essentially?

What's next? Everyone Poops: The Movie?

I might as well be the first to say...

This looks awesome!

I'm a little biased though, considering I'm a huge dragon fan... but whatever.

Still waiting for the innevitable Temeraire movie, though... *fingers crossed*

I love dragons. I seriously do. But...I don't know about this movie. The dragon doesn't even look like a dragon. Looks more like a cat with wings. Another thing that sort of irks me: A Viking named Hiccup...really? Wouldn't that be a more appropriate name for the dragon and not a viking? What parent, even if they are a viking, would be so cruel as to name their son HICCUP?

The story looks like it could be good if they tried to actually make it serious. I mean a dragon and a human trying to better the relations between the two races could make for an amazing and dramatic fantasy story but sadly, from the looks of the trailer, they're gonna go down that tired old comedy route again. Why not just do a movie that is serious with some funny, lighthearted moments instead of a movie that only has a serious moment near the end?

I know I'm being cynical towards this movie. But I can't help it. Dragons are my favorite animal, real or not. I just think Dreamworks has a chance to actually make this a memorable film but the way it looks right now I seriously doubt it...

It does look like a comedy aimed at young kids, instead of being done serious with a bit in it for folks of different ages able to like, with some comedy put in here and there.

I think this is why I tend to avoid Dreamworks movies like the plague. It's the same formula over and over again: A half baked story that is thrown away for lame poop and pop culture jokes, celebrity voice apperances, physical humor and CGI. Just once I'd like to see them try to at least make a movie that appeals to all ages. I mean I liked Shrek (the first one) but that was because it had a little of something for everyone.

Just because a movie is aimed at kids doesn't mean it can't be a serious flick. Look at Don Bluth's work.  Look at Disney films like Lion King and Aladdin. Serious kids movies with light hearted moments thrown in. They don't sacrifice story for lame jokes or annoying references.

How to Train Your Dragon looks like it has potential but from what I've seen from the trailer, it looks like it'll just be your run-of-the mill Dreamworks film. I hope they release one more trailer. Maybe it'll be enough to change my mind on this.

Well to bump an old topic, I just saw the second trailer for this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRbLJ2GEtns  Now is it true that the opening score was straight from Disney's Dinosaur? How is that possible? And why are they showing us montages of their films when they haven't even been around as long as Disney and Pixar have? Not to mention they don't even have as good a reputation as Disney and Pixar do.

My review for the trailer. Also a Toy Story 3 review. http://animeboye.deviantart.com/journal/29430058/#comments

Well, unlike the few people that commented on this, I LOVE Dreamworks and their animated films and this movie happens to appeal to me. :)

True, the dragon looks a bit...odd...but I don't know...it just looks good because of the whole "the biggest and the strongest are the best" and I sort of feel that way as someone who is not great in sports. It makes me think of a movie about Autism, a different generation coming up and being different then the generation before them.

initial reviews are promising, and I get the feeling it will be a good deal of fun for the kids. The 3rd trailer and the review I saw on TV make it look like a pretty action packed adventure, with a rather standard plot. I'll be seeing it 2d, since I hate all that gimmicky 3d stuff, but I'm still looking forward to it as a fun movie.

And, it has dragons. DRAGONS!

That trailer made me wanna puke.  And I thought Shrek was bad...

Seriously, I love dragons too.  But I just can't see this becoming a decent movie with the way the way the trailer portrays it.  The story is good overall, but the cheesiness of the thing makes me sick.  Talk about a way to scam a quick buck out of people.  It's the classic ploy of making a VERY simple story, embellishing it with a bunch of dry/crude humor, and riding on the back of other successful movies in order to make a quick buck.  I wouldn't even pirate this. :neutral

^ You forgot one thing, landbeforetimelover: using a cutsie character with no personality to sucker people in. In the three trailers I watched, I found nothing intresting or cute about Toothless. Its design is uncreative and even a little ugly. Why not have just stuck to the original design? A small, green, talking baby dragon? That would have been intresting and even provided some depth between the protagonists.

The story may be good, but it's been told before and it's been told better. Hiccup is the generic underdog we've seen in many a movie. A nobody at the beginning with zero confidence but quickly becomes a hero, gets the girl, discovers his self worth and makes everything right in the world. If you've played RPGs or watched shonen anime, then you know exactly how this story will go.

Dont like it? dont watch it. You cant always have everything being "perfect". Not anything to see at the theaters(Saving that for Clash of the Titens and Prince of Persia! dont care if people say "eww, a movie based on a game! It's gonna stink!")

As for the movie? I think it looks like a cute movie! But as i said: It's not anything i would watch at the theaters..

EDIT: I think the Dragon looks cute!  :(

I don't recall saying I want this to be "perfect". I don't expect this to be Citizen Kane or Shakespeare for kids. All I did was express my opinion on this movie. You think it looks cute. That's YOUR opinion. I don't think it looks good. That's MY opinion. I'm not trying to make people hate this movie or not want to see it. What others do shouldn't and doesn't worry me. If they like the movie, fine. If they don't, that's fine as well. But what I don't like is when people expect others to be saying nothing but positive things about a film before its release. The point of discussion is just that: To discuss your feelings on something, not to say "This looks good. Yep. I agree.". That's why forums like these exist.

If people can't share their thoughts on a movie, even if they don't think it will be good, then why discuss the movie in question in the first place?

I would totally dig a Citizen Kane for kids. Rosebud would be a talking sled and everything! It would be awesome, and incredibly bizarre.

Anywho, final thoughts on what I've seen so far. Looks promising and fun, the key word being FUN. I intend to have fun seeing this, that is all. That's why I go to movies, to have a good time. I don't need an epic story about settling differences or amazing characterization and all that stuff.

Actually now that I think about it, we're arguing over some trailers and stuff... so please don't get too carried away folks.

I just  :lol  ed at the thought of Rosebud talking! Jittery thanks, that really made me laugh! And a kids Citizen Kane would just be so funny and trippy...just so long as it isn't like Titanic the Animated Musical. PLEASE NO RAPPING DOGS!!

I hear you on that one. It would totally have the sled singing about the good old times, though.

Man, I'm already writing a script to this thing in my head. Time to bang it against a wall, again ;)

Okey, from what I've read, the movie got a lot of good reviews and I plan to go see it some time.  I think it looks like it could be interesting.

I'll watch it too. I'm a huge fan of 2D and 3D animation.
But I'll probably wait for the DVD. When I hear people being loud while watching a movie, it makes me sick and I cannot concentrate on the movie.  <_<
