The Gang of Five
Howdy, everyone!

As you know, the forum has been fighting spammers and bots for years. We have seen our fair share of "Custom Kitchens UK", scammy Internet hosting companies, and bots trying to send us to a business's homepage. But after fighting the tidal wave of spam for so many years, the admins had a persistent thought: what if the spammers are right? Not in terms of posting nonsense links and trying to scam our users, but in trying to make money through our unique platform?

Well, thanks to the helpful counsel of Taunt, we have finally decided to move the forum in a new direction. Please see his important post on the matter in this topic

Enough with these Talking Ads Already!

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but sometimes when I go onto this forum, I suddenly hear something talking.  I soon enough realize that it's the ad on the site.

Okay, are advertisers this desperate now?  Seriously, a talking ad that's a lot like a Google Ad?  Sure it gets our attention, but it's downright annoying!

It makes me want to click on it even less. (I've already gotten to a point where I don't click on Ads as it is.) To me, it doesn't help them and it only drives away people from this forum.

Look, I don't care what the mods of this forum have to do with InvisionFree.  Send an angry e-mail, threaten, bribe, blackmail... I don't care, just make them get rid of this.

IT'S ANNOYING!!

It annoyed the heck out of me. I got Adblock Plus, a freeware which helped  not only against this particular annoyance but against countless other ads as well. I really owe Iris for recommending me Adblock Plus and I now recommend it to anyone who shares your understandable annoyance John. I never ever had the problem again since I installed adblock plus.

Yeah, I've got AdBlock Plus on all my computers (except my server, as I never browse the web with it).  I can't even remember the last time I saw an ad!

Yeah, AdBlock Plus is great and all, but I'm talking about brand new members and current members having a problem with it.

You see, the big thing is that they will probably take the easy way out and just simply never come back to our forum, and that would be bad.  We know all the tricks, but others don't and that can be a big problem.

You guys get where I'm coming from here?

They won't remove the ads john. It's their primary income. Petrie has paid to remove the ads but they were back so quickly, that it really wasn't worth it.

Invisionfree isn't ever going to remove them, I don't think. Next to that, who says new users can't have ad block? More and more people I see browsing the internet have some kind of program to block advertisements, except for people that just don't care *points at Tim*.

Really depends on the person too. I know my bro actually enjoys seeing ads because they bring him to new games to play.

I didn't use to give a crap about seeing ads, but they just got more and more annoying and I just had to block 'em.  I don't feel guilty about it one bit either, because I don't care what they're selling; I will NEVER buy something online through an advertisement.  I'll never click on ads either.  Just be glad they're not those awful one's like on Cnet.com/Download.com (same site) that take over the entire window and make you click "Skip This Ad" at the top right portion of the screen. :bang

I use adblock plus and very seldom see an add.  Makes web surfing very pleasant indeed.  I doubt ads will be removed anytime soon since as someone said above it's their main source of income, same as network tv and I guess most cable channels have commercials also.  Though those are very annoying, or were when I use to watch commercial tv.  I'm just glad something like adblock exists.

The only time talking ads bother me is when they happen so suddenly like "CONGRATULATIONS YOU'VE WON!" and it scares the heck out of me, since I startle easily.

Those talking ads really get the attention, don't they?   I don't mind ads as long as they're not too intrusive. Pop-ups are one thing; ads that "talk" -- and loudly at that -- are a whole new level of "Enough with the plugs already!"

Hey Mr Merchant: Want to drive potential customers away, permanently? Keep on playing those grating online ads.

I keep the sound off on my laptop unless I'm watching a YT vid, using Skype, or playing music.  Works for me :lol.

If AdBlock wasn't around, I'd just turn off Flash for my main browser and use another browser if I wanted to watch Youtube or something.  Most new ads are made in Flash.

These aren't nearly as annoying as the ones on TV Tropes. There's this Raheem Devaughn ad for his new song "Bulletproof" that plays whenever you move your mouse over it, and it's right between the main text and the search bar, so you pass over it all the time.

Me: La la la, I'll just edit this page while listening to music on my headphones...

Speakers: BULLETPROOF!!! BULLETPROOF!!!

Me: MY EARS :bang

I startle easily, too .  I think it's 'cuz my hearing's so sensitive.  That's why I have the sound off on my laptop, aside from the fact that I use it in class.

I HATE the talking ads on TV Tropes.

Accidentally move your mouse over it and BAM! Aural assault.

TV Tropes just got rid of Raheem Devaughn, only to add a new one some song called "Everybody In Love." That was the last straw for me, so I downloaded an ad-blocker. Now I never have to see blue-skinned avatars making out on the side bar ever again! :D

Hold up, the ads talk? I only ask that cause most of the time, my computer is on mute, only volume up with say YouTube sort of thing.

Only certain ones.  Most of them are silent.  The ones on TV Tropes are a fine example of "Ads done wrong".

Ah, yes, I've had that at times, like those smiley ads, move mouse over and they talk! *grumbles*

I now see what you're getting at, I thought you meant they make sound without the mouse going over them sort of thing.
