I have a tattoo myself, a patch of green and yellow lizard scales on my right pec. And I can tell ya, I put a lot of thought into it, about a year. A tattoo is something you will be spending the rest of your life with. I tried to find something of significance for my tattoo, being that I have been a fan of lizards since childhood, I decided to honor it with my tattoo. You also need to keep in mind where you want to get it. Fleshy places like the arm usually have less nerve endings. Since I got the tattoo on my pec, I cannot quite describe how it felt but it was intense. x..X The five hours of pain was well worth it though!
As for making recommendations, I say sketch your own design, then take it to a tattoo artist you think you can trust and he or she can help add colors and depth. Coming up with your own design makes the tattoo more personal because you pretty much made it yourself. It takes a lot of pondering and contemplation, because whatever you want to get will stay on you for the rest of your life. I hope I helped in some way, and when you do get that tattoo, good luck!
