I had my own post in the Sequels Ranking topic a while back. Although when I did my tier list months later, I found that a few of the films I swapped around from their original order.

General Land Before Time / The Japanese LBT 5
« on: May 26, 2020, 07:00:23 PM »
I would like to thank @OwlsCantRead for his livestream over the weekend. A while back, he purchased a copy of The Mysterious Island, albeit at the time he didn't realize it was a dual language copy containing both the standard English version, and a Japanese version as well. It was something he just happened to discover much later on when he was scanning the DVD case digitally for Mumbling. The whole thing was a complete accident, albeit a happy accident, for it made for a pretty entertaining and unique stream!

I would also like to thank Owls for taking the time to manually do up English subtitles for the stream. I don't know Japanese myself and so I would have had no idea what they were saying otherwise... which admittedly I do think would've been entertaining and comical in its own way. :! Nonetheless, I appreciate his time and effort into setting it up so that the rest of us would be able to understand the characters.

I think the funniest moment for me was just after the Gang snuck off from the main herd in the desert, leading to Topps in his Japanese voice giving an epic yell of "CEEERRRAAA!" :p

The voices themselves were pretty good. Some of them still sounded fairly similar to their English counterparts, while others sounded quite different. Although I found that, by the halfway point of the film, I didn't really notice the Japanese voices all that much any more. I don't watch non-English movies with subs very often, but on the occasions when I do, I find that my mind eventually just registers the subtitles as though they were speaking actual English.

The songs did stand out to me more. It was quite interesting to hear the same instrumentation, but with totally different voices singing along. :DD

Owls tells me that the Japanese dub is surprisingly faithful, which makes me curious if some of the other language dubs deviated further than that or not. Either way, this was quite an unexpected treat, and it piqued my interest in seeing more alternate language versions of the LBT series in the future. :yes

I happened to stumble upon this thread just now. I was reading through the above responses and I was going to make a post of my own... when I arrived at the bottom of the thread and saw that I already did respond. Huh, interesting. I honestly have no memory of this thread, even after reading my above post. :p

There's a part of me that wishes I'd discovered this place a few or several years earlier. But on the other hand, I think I also discovered it at just the right time in my life.
:duckyhappy

It's very interesting to see that most people here first joined in either their teenage years or young adult years. Dang, imagine if there was a person who was 1-8 years old on our forum right now. That would be cool actually. :)
I would honestly be fascinated to see a person that young conversing with others here.

Agreed. :)

Gamers Zone / Re: Super Mario All-Stars
« on: May 23, 2020, 06:35:38 PM »
Awwww yeah. An awesome set of games right here. This was my jam growing up. Many happy memories playing this in the basement of my parents' old house. :DD (Like with Flathead, I had the version without Super Mario World in it, but I also owned that game separately.)

I was largely more familiar with the All-Stars versions as a kid than the original NES versions. Even though I did play those later on, All-Stars is in my opinion the ideal way to play the games. The inclusion of a save feature, making it much easier to unlock the bonus worlds in Lost Levels, and the gorgeous graphical enhancements. Super Mario All-Stars is definitely something I'll come back to revisit time and time again. :yes

Anyone bust out the flute secret on SMB3? Awesome truck. :)

I've done it, certainly, although I seldom ever use it because I prefer to play through the full game.

While I don't disagree with the above points, I'm more tolerant of sequels than a lot of people are. Occasionally sequels are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, but I've always been a fan of the serial format and watching story/character arcs unfold across multiple installments.
:)petrie

Indeed. One of the many reasons I love TLBT is we have fourteen films of character development and stories. :)

Speaking of which, I should really finish reviewing the TV series sometime.
