"C'mon, Ducky. We gotta get goin' if we're gonna survive," Aurelia said. Ducky slowly stood up, her heart full of sorrow. Renn looked around at the destroyed landscape in disbelief.
"Aw, man. We're really lucky indeed," he gasped just before he took Ducky by the hand. "Let's go, sweetie."
"Okay, dear," she sniffled as they joined in following Longtail. Ducky then recalled what Aurelia had told her a few moments before. She and Renn slowed down so they were to the left of Aurelia.
"Aurelia, may I ask you something?" Ducky asked quietly. Aurelia nodded.
"Sure. What is it?" she asked.
"Aurelia, you said you know what it is like to lose your entire family at once. You did, you did. If I may ask, how did it happen?" Ducky asked.
"Well, I seldom talk 'bout my past, but I'll tell ya. When I was just a little kid, my family was attacked by a pack o' fastbiters. I had a mama, a papa, two brothers, and three sisters. They were all killed off like new hatchlings," Aurelia replied.
"How did you survive?" Ducky asked.
"Mama told me run, so I did. I came across a pond, and swam out to the center," she explained. "Fastbiters won't dare go far out in water."
"But you are a threehorn, yes you are," Ducky pointed out.
"That don't mean I hate the water. My folks thought I was odd 'cuz I love bein' in the water," Aurelia said.
"Did you join another herd?" Ducky asked.
"Nope. I've been on my own since," Aurelia replied. Ducky could see Aurelia was starting to become emotional.
"I am sorry for upsetting you, yep yep yep," Ducky whispered.
"Don't worry 'bout it. It wasn't your fault. Don't worry, Ducky. Soon before long, we'll all be in a peaceful place full of greenfood and water again," Aurelia said.
"You will have to show me your swimming, yep yep yep," Ducky said with a smile.
"It's a promise," Aurelia replied with a giggle.
