The Silmarillion is the prequel to The Middle Earth Legendsrium. Eru Illuvatar (God) creates Arda (larger world with Middle Earth as part of it) with the help of his Valar (lesser gods or Servants), one of whom is Melkor (Morgoth) who leads worship in Valinor, but deviates and worships himself, he is caste out with his apprentice Annatar (The Dark Lord Sauron). Eru with the Valar create the Elves, and Man, but a rogue Vala named Aule creates the Dwarves. Morgoth now caste to Arda (like Satab to earth) starts to create his own twisted creatipns such as Goblins, and infamous Belrogs (Fire Demons, corrupted Maiar, Gandalf fought one). There is another of beings below the Valar and Vala, the Maia and Maiar, who are the wizards like Saruman and Gandalf.

Well... I was expecting you to give me a short and sweet answer, but instead you wrote this. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate you for doing this, for giving me the opportunity to delve further into the LOTR lore. I'm no expert on the subject. My knowledge about the universe is only limited to what the movies revealed, sadly.
