Some of you might be familiar with Arecibo, the giant radio telescope in Puerto Rico. You might have also heard in the news that it was damaged by a snapped cable a few months ago. But now that the damages have been assessed, engineers have concluded that the entire structure is currently at serious risk of catastrophic collapse, and the only thing they can do now is simply tear down the entire structure as carefully as possible to avoid any further risk of damages. This tragically means that after 57 years of service, the Arecibo telescope, which has been vital to detecting things like exoplanets and near-Earth asteroids, has officially been shut down and will soon be demolished. To say this is a huge impact on astronomy would be an understatement.
