As many of you many know by now, the leading theories of what caused the K/T extinction event that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago are either the Chicxulub impact of a 6-mile-wide asteroid in Mexico or the mega-eruptions of the Deccan Traps in India. According to an article I read today, it seems these two events may have actually been linked.
http://www.livescience.com/50737-deccan-tr...act-linked.htmlBasically, a recent study revealed that the asteroid impact could have triggered an earthquake so massive that it rippled through the entire planet and accelerated the eruptions that were already going on at the other side of the world. I've thought for a while that it was these two events happening at roughly the same time that caused the mass extinction, but to find out that they may have actually been linked (one making the other even worse) is pretty remarkable.
