The first matches of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup will be tomorrow (or later today, depending on your time zone), so I figured it was time to start this topic.

Just like with last year's men's World Cup, even though I won't be able to watch all of the matches (especially considering the time zone difference for this tournament), I will definitely watch the matches where team USA will play (worth noting is they won the last two World Cups, so they now have an opportunity to potentially win three in a row, which has never be done by either men's or women's teams for any country), and possibly some played by the co-hosts Australia and New Zealand.

I will make an effort to try watching all matches once the knockout round begins, which will be particularly interesting since this is the first Women's World Cup to have 32 teams participating instead of 24, so this will be the first women's tournament to have a Round of 16 to begin the knockout stage. This new expanded format means there's quite a few teams who are making their very first appearance in a Women's World Cup (some of whom have not yet had even their men's team qualify for the men's World Cup), so it'll be interesting to see how well these less experienced teams will do.
(EDIT: I was mistaken. After some quick research, all previous Women's World Cups with 24 teams did in fact have a Round of 16 to start the knockout round. The expansion to 32 teams means there will be eight groups in the group stage rather than just six groups in previous tournaments.)

And just like I did last year, I will not waste my time with writing up summaries and will instead post links showing highlight videos and match details every day as each match is completed (assuming of course that I can find similar links with the sources I used last year).

I think that covers all the important things for now, so for those of you who will be watching, which teams are you most interested in seeing how they perform?

Well, the group stage is finally complete and it's time for the knockout stage to begin. There have been quite a lot of surprises in this tournament already.

Group A: New Zealand became the first host nation (co-host, in this case) to not advance beyond the group stage, former champion Norway almost got eliminated before making a major comeback in their third match, and Switzerland won their group for the first time.

Group B: Canada became the first defending Olympic champion to not advance beyond the group stage, with Nigeria performing quite well in this group, and Australia was able to move on thanks to their win against Canada.

Group C: Japan dominated this group, Spain comfortably advanced as the runner up, and first time and lowest ranked team Zambia managed to win a match on their way out.

Group D: England dominated this group, Denmark advanced from the group stage for the first time since 1995, and China was eliminated in the group stage for the first time ever.

Group E: While Netherlands did well in this group, the real shocker was how poorly the United States did in this group with ties against Netherlands and Portugal (and would have even been eliminated by Portugal if not for a late goal attempt being deflected by a post), making this only the second time the United States failed to win their group and advancing with the fewest points ever.

Group F: Although France won this group, Brazil was shockingly eliminated in the group stage for the first time since 1995, with the runner up being Jamaica who did not concede any goals and became the first Caribbean nation to ever advance to the knockout stage.

Group G: Sweden dominated this group, Italy was shockingly eliminated in the group stage for only the second time ever (thanks in part to the most unforced own goal I've ever seen), allowing South Africa to advance to the knockout stage for the first time ever.

Group H: By far the biggest upset of the entire tournament thus far was Germany failing to reach the knockout stage for the first time ever, which allowed Colombia to win the group, while Morocco's first appearance in a Women's World Cup (also the first Arab nation to reach the Women's World Cup) is now also advancing to the knockout stage.

And with all of that out of the way, here are the teams that'll be playing in the Round of 16 (I'll edit this post as the results come in).

The Round of 16 is finished, and while some dominant teams easily advanced, other teams made some rather surprising efforts. By far the biggest upset of all was the United States, which had reached at least the semifinals in all of the previous Women's World Cups, have be eliminated, making this by far their worst result ever. To be fair, it was against one of the best teams, and that match went to extra rounds of penalty kicks before the match was finally decided by a goal that barely made it in by practically a millimeter. In addition, all three remaining African teams were eliminated, Colombia advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time, and Australia still has a chance to become the second host nation to ever win the women's World Cup.

Well, seeing as my obvious pick to win the World Cup is now out (though at least I got the seven others correct), here are my updated predictions for the remaining matches:
Spoiler: ShowHide
Quarterfinals:
Netherlands
Japan
France
England

Semifinals:
Japan
England

Third Place:
France

Final:
England

And here will be the results of the upcoming Quarterfinal matches, which I'll update this post after they occur.

Spain vs Netherlands 2 - 1

Quarterfinals are finished and up next will be the Semifinals. Spain advances to their first ever semifinal, Japan is the last former champion to be eliminated (meaning we are now guaranteed to see a team win their first ever Women's World Cup), Australia barely makes it to their first semifinal after ten rounds of penalty kicks (the most ever in any World Cup match, men's or women's) and becomes the first host nation to advance that far since the United States twenty years ago, and England reaches the semifinals for the third time in a row.

Looks like I got only one out of four correct for the quarterfinals, so here are my updated predictions for the remaining matches:
Spoiler: ShowHide
Semifinals:
Sweden
Australia

Third Place:
England

Final:
Australia

And here will be the results of the upcoming Semifinal matches, which I'll update this post after they occur.

The semifinals are done, and the final match for the Women's World Cup will be Spain vs England.

With Sweden losing their semifinal match, that means both winning teams have reached the final for the first time ever. Australia reaching the semifinal may have been only the third time a host nation got that far after the United States did it in 1999 and 2003, but with Australia losing their semifinal match, the United States in 1999 still remains the only time a host nation reached the final, let alone actually won the Women's World Cup. These results also mean this is the first time since 2003 that both finalist teams are from Europe.

So it looks like I got my predictions wrong on both semifinal matches, but that just means my picks for the last two matches remain the same (except it's for the final instead of third place and same for the other way around). I'll edit this post later for the results of the third place match, then I'll make my next post after the final match is done.

Sweden vs Australia 2 - 0

Spain wins the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup!

Spain vs England 1 - 0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SETklkU1G8Y

Overall, this whole tournament was quite interesting. With more teams participating than in previous World Cups, some lesser teams had the opportunity to score some upset wins against the bigger teams, some of which got eliminated surprisingly early, including the highest ranked team United States. (One silver lining to the United States being eliminated so early is that it allowed an American referee to officiate the World Cup final match for the first time, so that was nice to hear about.) Many of the teams that had advanced further than ever before certainly made their countries proud, and regardless of how successful or not that all these teams were, it seems the FIFA Women's World Cup has a bright future ahead of it.
