That match the US played against Spain quite remarkably didn't go as easy as many were expecting. Much like France over Brazil yesterday, the US really had to step up their game to actually advance through the tournament. And with that goal Spain scored, team USA's shutout streak in World Cup matches (going back to the group stage match against Australia in 2015) finally ends at a total of 647 minutes (not sure if that's a record, but it would not surprise me if it is).
Looks like USA will be playing against France in the quarterfinal on Friday, just like a lot of experts were predicting. It should be noted that most of these experts were also rather evenly split on either the US or France would eventually win the World Cup, making this upcoming quarterfinal arguably the most important one of all. Personally, as much as I think France deserves to go further, I don't think it should come at the expense of giving the US its worst finish ever in a Women's World Cup, so I'm sticking with team USA.
